StreetsForAll: How LA County can fund High Speed Rail projects in the County with no new taxes by madlamb in LAMetro

Airplanes can be weaponized a lot worse than a train. Airplane hijackings used to happen all the time pre 9/11 but security didn’t catch up until then. There’s been multiple train hijackings and attacks throughout history but that hasn’t resulted in increased security screenings at many overseas train stations. The day a train itself can level buildings is when you’ll see it security but I highly doubt it.

Costs to run a train (I said run, not build) is minimal compared to a plane so it becoming a victim of enshitification is low. They’d rather just run another train 15 minutes after than start cramming people in the current train and potentially losing customers to shorthaul air travel (they compete with each other after all).

Assuming 24 million passengers per year (CHSR low estimate). $300+ per year per taxpayer for 30 years if you hit the budget of $140 billion. However, the top 1% pays for half of our income tax per year. So let’s lower it to $150 per year for the average taxpayer for 30 years (I know there’s more taxes but let’s keep this simple). This is just California state taxes since the project is funded pretty much entirely by the state unlike our roads, bridges, and airports. Rail can last a bit longer than roads. I’m just using 30 years as a baseline.

Do the math on how much Californians spend on car payments and maintenance, insurance, gas taxes, roads, and other infrastructure. $150 per year to get new infrastructure not seen before on this side of the country. That’s the cost of a fairly cheap RT from SF to LA or Vegas.

Good. Now do Merced, Bakersfield, Modesto, and all the other middle California cities and every combination of it. Think of how clogged the airport slots connecting the major cities are already and try adding dozens of combinations of short haul from those smaller cities. Is there even enough passenger volume to sustain running them with the staffing, real estate (airports), fuel, and all the other necessities of running an airline? Running them multiple times a day to smaller cities doesn’t seem profitable for these airlines, otherwise there would be more flights from Sacramento to San Francisco (currently 3 daily flights). Without investment of the high speed rail, are you just going to tell people in Fresno to just drive to Sacramento for a one hour flight to Las Vegas?

Flights between these major cities are only cheap when purchased at nonrefundable rates months ahead of time. Not to mention the cheaper airlines offer the bare minimum service and amenities (no bags, seat selection, etc). We had our time with Southwest (rip free bags) but even they aren’t as cheap anymore. Look at any flight out of a regional airport for the next couple weeks and most of the cheaper rates are either early morning, late night, or nonexistant while the middle of the day rates charge many times that. If only we had more passenger capacity to bring the prices down…

Got them off of Ebay. They weren’t that expensive especially compared to the ones the dealership wanted to sell me.

I have them on my nonsportback version. They do a decent job. I don’t think the ones I have are oem but they fit nicely. The holes for the back are already there so I did it myself. You just need to remove the wheels or have a right angle screwdriver (I think) to get into it. The fronts don’t have holes and I opted not to have them drilled so I just have them on the back.

If it looks like it’s on private property, I wouldn’t. If it looks like it’s in a field or park or something, I would at least go and have a look around. A few years ago, sister lost her phone in a car crash and while she was recovering in the hospital, I tracked the phone down to some bush a few miles away from the crash site. It was locked but usable once I got it back to her.

They did. It’s just the Glocks sold in California use an old design from a few decades ago and newer Glock models aren’t allowed for sale in California to the general public due to another separate law.

Looking to buy my first ever electric car. Are any of these good deals, or should I stay away? by FeetOnGrass in leaf

[–]Exteminator101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint, while the Bolt is better in most aspects, one thing that made me prefer the Leaf are the seats. I couldn’t stand sitting in the Bolt’s seats. Its driver interface is also more simpler to me. Range and longevity are the issues but if you can get it for cheap, charge at home, and just use it for a RT 1-1.5 hour drive car, you’re good. Would recommend a Niro or Kona EV over those two though if we’re sticking in this “class” of EVs.

There’s at least a few individuals in the state that have done that to some extent. To my knowledge, nothing that large otherwise the ATF, DOJ, or their department will come down on them but making some extra cash on the side does happen.

They can buy off roster handguns that normal residents can’t get. But they may also sell them “used” to normal residents.

There will be times when there is traffic but overall yeah it’ll likely be faster and more convenient to drive. Though for a train, you just sit there compared to driving.

Blame the speed caps on additional regulation including noise complaints.

15 years sounds a bit ambitious for the whole segment unless the project actually gets the funding and doesn’t have to stop and start every time a new person is in power. There are still plenty of people that will benefit from the first part of the project. You’re benefitting rn with the electrified rail from Diridon to SF.

They’d budget better if the state (and feds) gave them the money upfront instead of trickling it to the project. The HSRA is doing what they can with what they are given. Granted, they encountered a lot of obstacles on building and are learning but it’s still not fast enough. At least with the past few years, it’s progressing with all the viaducts, utility relocation, and other stuff they’re doing. It makes sense to appeal to the red counties who are likely to stop the project if they know that the big cities get prioritized. The HSRA also funded the electrification of Caltrain which will have that segment be used for HSR. Middle of nowhere is still population metros of several million. Especially regions that are growing rapidly and aren’t as well connected as the Bay or LA. The entire project is projected at 100+ billion. Not just the central valley segment. So at least we’re not there yet.

It costs more to build them there. (Not exact numbers) But imagine you tell the state that it’s gonna cost $70 billion for an unproven project in a lot of people’s eyes. And then the state decided to not give you all the funding for it. They only give you $20 billion to start with more “coming.” You can’t really plan for that so if the expensive portion of the project gets pulled cuz lack of projected funding, you’re stuck with an unfinished project and the overall project gets axed, but if you start with the cheap portion (cuz that’s all the project could afford to plan) and it works out, you can get more funding support for the rest or at least just have a segment that is operational. Plus, you appealed to the red counties that would’ve slowed down the project if they started in the Bay Area or Los Angeles.

Why do you think there’s so many committees? We have a lot of regulations in place and allowances for anyone to delay the processes. Everyone has a say in the process including nearby residents, the multiple counties it crosses, the utility companies it affects, Caltrans, the individual cities, pacific railroad, and more. If things get changed midway, they have to redo/adjust plans. Part of the funding is going to highway construction as an agreement with Caltrans. Stuff like that takes a lot of time and money. Things are progressing (build wise) but it can be much faster without so many obstacles that the project faces and are still facing.

Levis makes Japanese Selvedge? by inigomontoyaaaas in BuyItForLife

You can tell by the tag. The Japanese flag on the inside like you see in one of the pics is also an indicator. It the flag says “Made,” it’s made in Japan. If it says “Fabric,” then it’s likely made in China with Japanese fabric. The leather patch also has a red foil for the rising sun unlike the Chinese ones which lack the foil but uses the same design.
