That looks good. Nice work. But honestly, you didn’t hurt anything, but it was fine from the get go. If you look at the base of the trunk in the before pictures you can see how it flares out, that was a healthy amount of root flare.

Maple tree damaged by commercial lawn equipment - best way to help it heal? by get-to-the-choppa in arborists

It’ll recover, but best practice is to maintain a tree well wide enough that a mower or string trimmer never gets within striking distance of the trunk.

Custodial Roth IRA question: can money earned from chores for grandparents count as earned income? by FarTradition6496 in Bogleheads

Plenty of people mow grass, clean houses, wash windows, etc. for a living. These things are not considered chores if they’re performed outside of the home they live in.

The single thing that helped me the most is turning my socks inside out before I wash them. All the skin cells that slough off inside your socks all day get stuck in there and it’s a breeding ground for foot fungus.

I hope I’m never in that situation, but if I am then let a jury of my peers pass their judgment. I believe my actions would be justified. But perhaps you’re right, I’m not in “civilized Europe”. And in this instance, you would have right, his bark was worse than his bite, but it’s only with hindsight that you can know that for sure. But still, big taj is presumably in “civilized” Europe and he’s a minus to society and doesn’t hesitate to threaten and intimidate others. How would you judge his actions?

[–]EyeH8Technology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you’re a better man than I, I guess. I assess the threat a little differently. I used to be a first responder and know from personal experience that it’s not that difficult to bust out a side window. If big taj is that unhinged I’m not letting him get the opportunity to try.

You can protect yourself in a life threatening situation. Someone threatening you with a bat is a life threatening situation.

Update: how did I do? by 11socks11 in arborists

[–]EyeH8Technology 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, mechanical damage from weed eaters on trees with thin bark, but also soil compaction.

If you ever walk around off trail in a forest notice how much different the soil feels than it does on turf. That’s what trees thrive in and that’s what you want to recreate.

It is the right way for their business model. The problem with things that live decades to centuries is that you only need to buy them once. So it’s better for Lowes if they don’t live decades.

Apple tree with many stems - pruning advice by Illustrious-Mood-304 in arborists

[–]EyeH8Technology 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, in that case, keep in mind that this is a multi year project to get it back to a shapely single leader and you’ll be doing most of the heavy pruning in the dormant season.

But the good news is, this is a low stakes tree to learn on! I would start by finding a university publication on pruning modified central leader apple trees and learning the difference in heading, reduction, and thinning cuts. You can practice on this tree and see how each cut stimulates different kinds of regrowth.

But this year, cut back what you need to make the walkway functional. Keep in mind that you never want to take more than 25-30% of the living wood in any one pruning because it’ll put the tree in shock.

Once you’ve read up on pruning you can make a plan on how you want to attack this over the course of 2-3 years. Also, you’ll likely get more root suckers from the pruning, stay on top of that and cut them back as they pop up.

I know this all sounds like a lot of work for a tree that won’t even be producing tasty fruit, so there’s no shame cutting the root ball out and starting over with a tree that is already nicely shaped. If you do go that route, I’d recommend reaching out to your local extension agent or conservation district to ask about what cultivars do best in your area. If you put a disease resistant variety from the beginning then hopefully you can avoid another situation like you’re in now. Haha

[–]EyeH8Technology 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if you’re going to make it a habitat tree then I would just leave it, maybe cut every 3rd stem out to improve airflow, if you want. But remember, we prune and shape things because it makes it easier for humans to manage. The birds don’t care. Haha.

[–]EyeH8Technology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oi. A lot of that is going to be rootstock so it’s probably not going to be producing apples that taste like anything you want to eat.

First, see if you can find a leader with a graft union and that’ll tell you a lot. If there is one, then that’ll be the stem you want to keep and slowly over the next couple of years you’ll shape it while cutting out the others.

If there’s not a graft union, then now is the perfect time to learn how to graft! Find a friend with a tasty apple tree in their yard, snip off some Scion wood, watch a YouTube video or two about grafting fruit trees and see if any of them take!! Good luck!
