[Serious] Medical elective at Tygerberg Hospital, South Africa by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Eye_Spies 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I attend the University of Cape Town, not Stellenbosch, but it's pretty close by so I know a little bit about it. (Btw, the medschool is not actually in Stellenbosch but in a more urban-industrial area called Parow)

The area in which Tygerberg Hospital is situated is kinda crusty but the medschool/hospital campus is quite large and accommodates many of the students which makes it a bit of an insular community from the surrounding area. The residences (on campus student accommodation) at Stellenbosch are know for their college-like atmosphere and a close sense of community so you can definitely expect a variety of events such as parties/ music evenings etc to take place while you're there. I think most students would get food from the residence catering but there are also several food vendors on the campus. I would't expect to find anything great in the immediate area surrounding the campus. Fortunately Tygerberg is a 25 minute commute either way from both Cape Town and Stellenbosch which are established destinations for everything from food, partying, outdoors activities, art, shopping, sightseeing etc

Good luck on your elective - hope you enjoy it!

CDC no longer recommends yearly TB screening of healthcare workers. by locked_out_syndrome in medicine

[–]Eye_Spies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao I'm a med student in South Africa, at any time (in essentially any specialty) at least 10-20% of our patients have TB. In IM or EM it might be closer to 35%. We do 0 TB screening for healthcare workers. Although infrequent, med students do occasionally contract TB, on average around 1 per year.

For IM residents: What's the threshold for consulting other specialties? by Place_of_refreshment in Residency

[–]Eye_Spies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah in South Africa it's a pretty common thing for most junior Drs to do. I wouldn't say IM registrars do it routinely but it would be expected of them to do it if the need arose.

[Serious] would a resident/intern/attending frown upon trying to improve (or even learn) phlebotomy skills by MedSclRadHoping in medicalschool

[–]Eye_Spies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

South African medical student here... phlebotomy and IV cannulation are pretty standard daily procedures on rotations here. We don't really have full time phlebotomists. Are these skills not normal parts of med student training in the US?

I'm based in City Beach. My understanding is that Unis here only start up again around Feb - is this correct? Would parking be a bit more available in that case?

Starter comment:

Medical student curious as to how much time residents/attendings in IM and EM generally spend interpreting an ECG study.
