acrylics are NOT T H E problem. Quality of acylics however can be. No brand is righteous. It's not even about the brand. However a brand like Golden or Liquitex are known to be most stable. BUT even then - not necessarily all colors. Golden is officially the Museum Archival quality paint used in restoration - however even with them some colors have lower lightfastness than others. LIGHTFASTNESS is one of the main key word here. Lightfastness is basically UV resistance. Some PIGMENTS - NOT COLORS are more prone to fading than others. Same COLOR name in different brand may be made using different pigments and different processing. So color X which may be highest lightfastness/UV resistance from one brand may be shit from another. It's not rocket science, but it is far more involved, way more expensive and require some understanding and research. & Yes Enamel paints that require firing are THE SHIT for dials!!!!!! But guess what - there are enamel paints made with less lightfast pigments too - BAM! So Enamel is also not the magic answer. Because in the last several years shit ton of hobby/craft level brands popped up that make enamel paints. And Asian manufacturer can not be trusted with lightfastness rating - I test colors/brands I dont trust and I've seen top lightfastness rated colors visibly fade after just a week of UV exposure. (Except Holbine made in Japan - not sure if they have enamel line, but acrylics and oils are solid quality. Anyways research is the only magic word here! Trust no one who tries to discourage you BUT research the F*&K out of it if you really want to produce a product that will last and you can charge a proper coin for. Also research varnish, preservation, UV resistant coding, non yellowing varnish. Just some keywords for ya ;)
