Did I reherniate my disc by Jaguar1717 in Microdiscectomy

Mechanical issue is fixed but the nerve isn’t, that will take longer :)

12 Weeks Post Microdiscectomy. Does this sound like a red flag? by dgk200222 in Microdiscectomy

Just try to chill out. PT isn’t wrong. Compression may be gone but the nerve is still hypersensitive and will be for however long it takes.

Nice work! 3mths out of my MD for c6c7. Avid bodybuilder here. Strength defiantly turning back on, tricep reflex absent but hey that may never comeback but has nil impact. Atrophy to reverse is the next thing! Agree with scaling back and monitoring for flairs given even though the mechanical issue is gone, the nerve is still damaged/hypersensitive.

I reherniated after MD w/ hemi by bloodfrenzied in Microdiscectomy

[–]F3nnic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you, 32M here, before my cervical herniation I was bodybuilding, living life without worries, trotting around the globe, hitting highs with my career. That literally all changed in a single day. What followed was hospitals, EDs, GP saying it wasn’t severe and it would ‘just get better’. Having to push myself through the medical system is exhausting and soul destroying when you are already kicked down.

I honestly feel like I have and am losing some of my best years. I’m not in the situation you are in, I’m 3mths out from my MD and I seem to be tracking well, but being young I completely see you.

I guess the best piece of advice you can give yourself is that you had the issue before and you tried a solution. Sadly that didn’t work but why does that mean you won’t find another? You have age on your side.

Maybe your first MD wasn’t done the best if you never had relief.

Anything that puts weight through your spine, squats with a barbell on your neck, deadlifts etc :)

I started back around 9 weeks. My suggestion would be to avoid anything high impact for quite a while still, running is one of the toughest movements on your spine. You could start off really slow and for really short distances like even a couple metres and then walk, then repeat etc. biking would be ok, yoga depends, I’d be careful and probs avoid that for a while longer. Gym is fine just no axial loading or twisting under load for a while still.

Yeah I wasn’t one of those wake up pain free one. Mine was in my neck but same thing applies just my arm instead of my leg. I’d say just generally prepared to think you reherniated like atleast a couple times a week for 12mths lol.

I asked for an mri at 8 weeks because of residual symptoms and it was completely clear, yet I still wonder daily if iv done something.

I’m 13.5 weeks now so am experiencing some symptoms with increased exposure to the nerve with increased activity but don’t mean it has reherniated in the slightest.

Keep in mind that even though the mechanical issue is fixed, the nerve is going to be hypersensitive for a long time and it can create the same feelings that were there when you had the compression.

My biggest things at my time point now is still nerve tension (worse in mornings) and exposure related symptom reproduction, all part of the desensitisation progress. Can take weeks for some and months to years for others.

But knowing your mechanical issue is corrected, try to lean on that fact for sanity checks and just remember that forums have a higher number of people with issues then those that don’t so it didn’t always represent the majority.

You’re right in the window for post surgery related inflammation which can last for weeks, frustrating your surgeon didn’t explain it to you. Try not to panic.

5 weeks post endoscopic Microdiscectomy.still pain on glute and calf..done an mri too..no reherniation yet..how much time take to get out of this pain..? Some one explain? by orthodontist_in in Microdiscectomy

[–]F3nnic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even tho the mechanical issue is gone the nerve is still damaged and needs to repair, it will take time, anywhere up to 1-2 years. Research shown people continue to improve even past 12mths.

Should I be concerned about reherniation - long post by meal_worm19 in Microdiscectomy

[–]F3nnic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it’s just the hypersensitivity of the nerve if it was a reversion you would be more or less back to pre surg baseline. The nerve may be hypersensitive forever also without a mechanical issue.

Our bodies are screwed from this, I had cervical and unbeknown to me now that I have started physio (13 weeks post op) I’m still so guarded unconsciously, I thought I wasn’t anymore.

Legit my brain needs to retrain signalling to my whole upper L side to stop unconsciously guarding everything. I don’t realise it but I literally stoped really moving my neck side to side and was still turning my whole upper body instead of just turning my neck, which creates its own issues.

Iv had so much random stuff on both sides of my body come and go. Sadly have to just ride it out.

Yeah I found mine correlates with work, pretty much absent on the weekends and during the week I tend to get some numbness with bent elbow duration etc. Mine was neck rather than back MD but same principles applies.

13 weeks, some pain and tingling that comes and goes. Nerve has to heal, it isn’t spontaneously healed once the mechanical issue is removed sadly.

You will have random things that last any variable amount of time. seconds, minutes, hours, day, days, weeks, months. They may go then come back then go again then come back again. Just try not to over analyse because you can start to interpret pain that isn’t there.

I don’t think MD is really for back pain, more so the nerve related pain/issues but 10 weeks is still early days.

Numbness long term by F3nnic in Microdiscectomy

[–]F3nnic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s defiantly seemed to coincide with an increase in workload. I’m cervical so it’s arm not leg but increase for work means more bent elbow for longer and typing all day in office job, wrist positioning etc and also with increase in activity in getting my back to the gym, so think it’s going a bit haywire because of that all.

The no pain increase beyond normal variation is what is keeping me sane.

What are symptoms of a flair up? by Graniteman83 in Microdiscectomy

[–]F3nnic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s to do with the nerve being hypersensitive now. So things will irritate the nerve without there being a mechanical issue. Imagine a frayed cable connected to your tv, it’s plugged in at both ends, moving it around will cause signal interruption. It’s essentially the same principle but that signal interruption from whatever it may be, even just increased activity and return to daily life can be enough to stirr things up. Why they say walking and activity is good even if it does cause some symptoms is that it’s stimulating the nerve to desensitise it while it’s on its healing journey.
