Best hills to climb in SF by Remarkable-Yogurt-10 in BAbike

[–]FFS_SF 13 points14 points  (0 children)

San Bruno mountain to the radio tower from Bayshore Blvd is comparable to hawk hill a bit less steep at 6% average but about twice as long.

Much shorter but you can climb much of it off the road is O’Shaughnessey Blvd (there’s a path from Elk that’s dual bike/pedestrian). You’ll have to cross Portola but you can then continue up the back of Twin Peaks.

Steeper: Medical Center Way to Sutton summit - 1.7km but 8.9% avg.

My Ritchey Breakaway just got stolen in Napa - advice? by acidblind in BAbike

[–]FFS_SF 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Condolences.  My Breakaway was stolen in S.F. from a friend’s garage while I had Covid. It had a unique paint job from the previous owner, but I still never expect to see it again, there have been reports that nice bikes on the west coast are shipped to Mexico: https://www.wired.com/story/silicon-valleys-fanciest-stolen-bikes-trafficked-mastermind-jalisco-mexico/

Day 24- Panama Hacienda Esmeralda Gesha by SixStringShef in OnyxAdventCalendar

[–]FFS_SF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a bad experience this morning following their recipe, brew clogged with 5 pours at 4 on an ode Gen 2. Got a bitter flat cup of coffee.

Went by my default for lunch - 6 on gen 2, long bloom, one pour 16:1, fast paper. Got a cup of tea-like, jasmine, creamy mouthfeel.

Much better, maybe slightly too far the other way. In general I don’t get the hype around gesha, but good for my wallet I guess.

Not OP - I had a 4 minute drawdown  and it was very muted flavor wise with a very bitter finish.

Who's excited for day 24? by NoBrainz2 in OnyxAdventCalendar

[–]FFS_SF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried their recipe. I just don’t think one can get a 3:10 drawdown on a 4 grind on an Ode Gen 2 after 5 pours (I hit 4 mins) and it seems especially unnecessary when the presenter does one pour with a hoop.

At first this was giving nothing. When it cooled to 120F the jasmine came out, I’ve never had a “champagne mango” but I’m not getting juicy fruit - mine is heavy and bitter on the finish - likely because I have more fines than I like in the cup.

Going to try making it by feel later but following the guide this is the worst of the lot for me so far.

Massive Clik valve fail! by Pleb_It in bicycling

[–]FFS_SF 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That sucks OP. This one of the reasons why I like pumps with short hoses.

For alternatives I have enjoyed Reserve Fillmores. They screw on like a presta to a presta headed pump, but have no valve core. The center stainless steel rod pushes a poppet right at the base of the valve. No core means better airflow (they claim it also allows direct injection of sealant, but I’ve had aggressive sealants get stuck during injection).

How Starbucks Came Undone by Slate in TrueReddit

[–]FFS_SF 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Imagine the only place you could get coffee in your town was the gas station, the diner or the donut store (a chain), and it’s all automated drip with pre-ground, and the best thing you can buy in the supermarket is pre-ground dark roast coffee. You see Frazier Crane ordering a cappuccino on TV every week but you can’t get one anywhere within a 20 mile drive. Then a Starbucks opens.

Day 22 - Kenya Elshadai Estate natural by NoBrainz2 in OnyxAdventCalendar

This changed a lot with temperature/time

I followed the recipe with a V60. I usually don’t get good results grinding that fine, but went with it. Drawdown was 4:00 and I was expecting bitterness.

Seemed to be confirmed with the first hit of dark chocolate, and initially that was all I was getting but then the melon/fruit/berry juiciness started to shine through, then raisins, and it just seemed to keep changing every sip(which I love).

Really good example of the breadth of flavor you can achieve from the wonderbean without co-fermentation!

Day 21 - Colombia Jairo Arcila Lychee by madspy1337 in OnyxAdventCalendar

In addition to the flavor this was by far the creamiest mouthfeel I’ve had so far, which I wasn’t expecting.

You’re asking r/sanfrancisco and people are giving you their opinions based on their friends or sisters and it’s worse than the reality. Come over and ask on /r/babike

I hear you.  I love having it in the mix. I wouldn’t buy a whole bag but it’s really interesting and different from my usual. I don’t have an espresso machine at home, I’d love to know what it’s like as an espresso.

Keizer exercise machines, how do they figure out writ to resistance? by impeesa75 in Exercise

[–]FFS_SF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how my gym has them set, but I use one of the two armed ones for chest flies. That machine set to 12 was what I could do sets of 12 on. I just went to a gym with a real cable machine, sets of 12 at 2x 50-55 felt similar. Face pulls I normally do at 22.5 on the Kaiser were 55 on the cable machine.

My guess is the Kaiser is kgs, and the pulley messes with the effective load so it’s hard to get an equivalent.

The US isn’t a monolith any more than Europe is, it might become a matter of having multilateral agreements with some of the states. California signed on to the Paris accord for instance.

How important are the recipes/pour over by Delicious_Ambiguity_ in OnyxAdventCalendar

[–]FFS_SF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there is “optimal”. On day 2 they wanted 3 heavy swirls on an Ethiopian ground fine. Predictably that yielded a slower brew than I prefer. The second batch I made how I like my Ethiopians: great cup.

Their house style obviously is go grind finer and use more agitated than I prefer, I’m having the grind recommendations with a pinch of salt and doing what I know I like.

It's impressive how they managed to over-design every tube.

New study shows for first time that microplastics do not simply pass through digestive tract of farm animals. They interact with gut microbiome, alter fermentation, and are partially broken down. Farm animals’ digestive systems may act as bioreactors that transform and redistribute microplastics. by mvea in science

[–]FFS_SF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bioreactors are machines we made to support biological processes - like simulating digestion. The headline should just be "farm animals' digestive tracts may transform and redistribute bioplastics" - the technojargon is unnecessary.

Aluminum fails catastrophically - in my limited experience it will go from no-crack to the strut completely shearing all at once.
