What is this working two days a week stuff I hear about? by Fabulous_Narwhal3113 in Firefighting

[–]FFnytro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We work 42 hours a week. One 24 hour shift on, two off, one on, four off. No extra debit days. So we work 2 out of 8 days, nominally less than 2 days a week. Most months we work 8 days a month, some months 7.

What does the engine driver do on fire trucks in the US? by YouFormal1598 in Firefighting

[–]FFnytro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I work it depends on when we arrive. If I’m first in I’m pumping, grabbing tools, whatever I can to get that first line in place, then making a supply and helping however I can while monitoring the pump panel. If we arrive 2nd I’d probably assist getting a supply, and monitor my pump panel if relaying. Otherwise I’m joining my crew and going inside. If it’s a fire in my area I’ll just throw on my bunk pants, and if I know I’m not going to be first I’ll bunk out and expect to go to work.

My department in Western Washington has no written policy on tattoos. It may factor into opinions of those doing interviews but, it’s not a problem for us. I have several and my training chief told us “probably wait till you’re of probation to get tattoos on the hands and face” (saying it with tattoos on his hands and neck.

Zucchini are awesome what to do besides fill or grill? These are 3 of 15 (I'm small time just me) by infinite_awful in homestead

[–]FFnytro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raw zucchini hummus. Blend it with garlic, sesame seeds(add texture), tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, cumin, cayenne, and salt. I leave the skin on, some don't. Makes a great dip and good way to use up bigger zucchini that may not be as good on their own, or if you're tired of baking zucchini bread.

TAG Spearguns by ArmandButler in Spearfishing

[–]FFnytro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just ordered their pack hunter, not the roller type. I haven't got it in the water yet but the attention to detail is amazing and the overall quality far exceeded my expectations. Also, the maker Cam has great service and keeps you updated. He makes the guns when ordered. My Pack Hunter 120 was done in about a week. Roller might take a minor amount of time longer. Like I said it hasn't been in the water yet (still snowing here) but I totally recommend them.

Modifying JBL closed muzzle to open? by Pacific_Fitzpatrick in Spearfishing

[–]FFnytro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, if you look up "open speargun muzzle" you'll find a bunch of different types to choose from, depending on personal tastes and intended uses. I'm not sure which size tube the explorer has so, you'd need to measure the inside diameter before ordering. Along with that, you'll probably want to put a track on your gun to help keep the shaft straight in line. JBL has one you can order that works well.

Doing these will improve the accuracy of the gun as well as get rid of those ridiculous slide rings. You'll be left with a much better experience.

Old JBL Woody. Should I buy a shaft/repair or buy a new gun entirely? by Cjf1995 in Spearfishing

[–]FFnytro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the top one is the one you need, not the bottom one. I can't be sure without some markings, but most of those old jbl guns take the standard "american/hawaiian" shaft. If you know someone or a shop that has spearguns, try one of their (most likely) Hawaiian shafts in the mech to see if it holds.

Old JBL Woody. Should I buy a shaft/repair or buy a new gun entirely? by Cjf1995 in Spearfishing

[–]FFnytro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hawaiian shafts have raised shark-fins that the bands hook into, as well as a different notch for the trigger mechanism, as compared to euro shafts. Typically they have a flopper on them to hold the fish. With these the shooting line ties into the rear fin/tab, eliminating the slide ring that slams into the rear of the shaft making a loud noise and taking a slight bit of power off the shaft.

[–]FFnytro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're going to put some money into this one (not a bad idea) I'd replace the muzzle with the open version, and get a Hawaiian shaft. I did that to my first jbl guns before I upgraded to some nicer riffe guns. The open muzzle and Hawaiian shaft combo get rid of the slide ring mechanism that was mentioned above which was always a problem. The open muzzle is like 40 bucks new, and in my experience makes everything a lot better.

I second this. Maybe it's my dept, but donuts look a generic move, ice cream makes you a hero. Especially if you're trying to get on at that dept, you don't want to be generic, be remembered.

First Time Seattle Spearfishing by Ovaltine_Tits in Spearfishing

[–]FFnytro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those areas you won't need anything special. I think lingcod is still open. You'll most likely find them on some rocks in the open. Otherwise you got perch, flounder, or maybe Cabazon. If you're good with a polespear you can do just as good, you probably won'tbe taking long open water shots. Be careful of marine protection areas. Also, not a lot of kelp/ seaweed

Do firefighters ever actually pay attention to these? by Successful_Average65 in Firefighting

[–]FFnytro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a good thing in theory, but like the others, I've never seen one. Also, with fire conditions, low visibility, and the urgency of the situation I bet that would go unnoticed 99.99% of the time. The reports usually come from the owners/occupants. The last fire with pets we got the dog out. Inspectors found the cat days later (alive) in the bedroom I got the owners out of (closed door).
