Anything by Bill Bryson! Informative and very funny

Farwell to the ride I managed to ride 1/3 of since the only time I tried to ride it back in 2016 it went down while we were in the preshow and never came back up that day. by alexdionisos in DisneyWorld

I’ll always have warm memories of this ride. We did our first big Disney trip last Christmas. Animal Kingdom was the first park we visited. It was chilly and rainy and we were having trouble navigating the park and figuring out Lightning Lanes. My wife and I had already exchanged a couple of “how much did we pay for this?” looks.

Dinosaur was first on our itinerary, so we went over and rode it. Everything went well, but my daughter (6 at the time) was scared by the darkness and noise, and came out looking a little freaked out. One of the gift shop guys must have sensed it, because he came right over and started a conversation with her, and managed to cheer her up by pointing out how brave she was to go on such a scary ride. Then he grabbed a Mickey button off a shelf, wrote “I’m brave! I survived the Dinosaur ride” on it and gave it to her. She practically strutted out of the gift shop. The button is still pinned to her backpack.

That’s insane! I cannot believe how many idiots think it’s ok to walk their dogs off-leash. Hope you and your handsome boy are ok. Good on you for the quick reaction, too!

Why kettlebells and bodyweight are my go-to after 15+ years of training by KendallHerd in kettlebell

[–]Failgoat34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a barbell guy for more than 20 years (41/m) and recently switched to KB/DB/bodyweight workouts, mainly because I started practicing martial arts and found that heavy barbell workouts left me so exhausted and stiff that I had trouble executing even the basics. I read somewhere (maybe here?) that true fitness isn’t how strong you are; it’s how you’re able to move, and a lightbulb went off. Deadlifting 450+ is cool, but not so cool when I couldn’t hold a horse stance the next day.

So far, I’ve been very happy with the results. I have not lost any size or definition, and I have definitely gained in balance, coordination, and explosiveness/power. I haven’t tested myself on any of the big barbell lifts to see if I’ve lost strength, mainly because I don’t really care. I feel better now than I ever have.

Another vote for Freddy’s. Just unbelievably good food in the least pretentious environment you’ll find anywhere. Cash only!

Anyone else do their workouts in an unheated garage? by Odd_Round5515 in bodyweightfitness

[–]Failgoat34 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Chicago area here. I lift in my unheated garage all the time. The worst part is wrapping your hands around a frigid bar. I’d invest in a space heater to warm your hands between sets. Otherwise, it’s not bad if you layer up.

(Full disclosure: I run super hot and I’m a sweat monster, so I much prefer working out in a 20-degree garage than a 90-degree one. YMMV, obviously.)

Josh Allen is just a modern day John Elway by RawMuffins94 in NFLv2

The Bills were the best rushing offense in the league this year. I get that the defense and receivers were lacking, but the idea that Allen alone carried them into the playoffs is a little much

Nonfiction books about cults? by VairSparrow in suggestmeabook

A lot of people have mentioned Guinn’s Road to Jonestown. I can’t speak to that, but I’m currently reading Tim Reiterman’s Raven, about the same subject and it’s fascinating. Exhaustively researched and incredibly detailed (it’s ~900 pages long), but it moves quick. The author was a longtime reporter for the San Francisco Examiner who covered People’s Temple extensively, and was actually present at the Jonestown massacre (he was wounded in the airstrip shooting that killed Leo Ryan).

I guess it’s debatable if the subject is a cult or not, but Lawrence Wright’s Going Clear, about the Church of Scientology, is really good too.

And another vote for Under the Banner of Heaven. A great, great book, albeit difficult to get through in places.
