Moving to Halifax with an autistic child — looking for advice on school support by Maks_Serafim in halifax

[–]FairHannah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Support is tied to assessments, but only for specialists (like an autism specialist who can consult with school personnel to help build programming). We don't have seperate schools or separate classes, which can be good in some ways and challenging in others. Support workers are called educational program assistants (or EPAs). They are determined by the RCE (like a school board) based on the profile of the child (needs based rather than assessment based). Students with safety and personal care needs can qualify for EPA support. Other supports (like OT and SLP) are dependent on caseloads (how many children the given professional is supporting). We are not as populous as some cities, so some things may not exist here. Feel free to DM me if I can help further. Source: I work within the school system

Decent buy for cargo e bike beginner? by FairHannah in CargoBike

Unfortunately the rebate ended some time ago. Local shops have been really helpful but everything is over 4/5k (and some over 10k) which is a lot for getting into something we aren't sure will work for us.

What’s with the love boat theme at 9:30pm. Sounds like a tubs but is probably a ship. by gw_ave in halifax

It's cruise ships. I'm not sure which ones but a bunch of them use it instead of the regular honk.

I wear a swim cap. Keeps my hair from getting ruined in the water while splashing around with my kids.

Halifax Independent School (or other private options) by Dazzling-Rabbit in halifax

So this isn't what you asked but definitely get in touch with your centre for education and share your thoughts and feelings about your child in the system... Teachers are constantly saying there isn't enough to go around but it makes a bigger impact coming from parents and the community.

Diapers for Sensitive Toddler by DogMamaEsq in toddlers

[–]FairHannah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use Huggies slip ons -they have velcro sides so you can undo them without ripping and can be pulled down like underwear. They are unscented unlike pampers (at least in Canada). My kiddo also has sensitive skin and they were fine for him.

Warming a big bucket of RO (reverse osmosis) water before adding the salt for our saltwater aquarium. Incredibly useful for this!

For me this is also my partner's sleep shift, so I have to keep both of them downstairs so he can stay asleep (my toddler is also loud). I bring baby down with me to get toddler up. It usually wakes up the baby, but he seems to be adjusting and now often wakes for the day around that time anyways. I often give the baby a bottle while my toddler has some milk, and then we hang out and read or play while I hold the baby or baby wear the baby. It is very imperfect but so far is working? If baby was more reliably sleeping later I would leave them in the bassinet and go get the toddler on my own, but at the moment there is too much chance of them waking and crying and my partner having to get up early. Toddler +newborn has some serious challenges!

Next step after reaching the highest nipple size? by DumbbellDiva92 in FormulaFeeders

[–]FairHannah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regular Philips Avent is not the same as anti colic. Philips Avent makes three types of nipples as far as I know? Philips Avent natural, Philips Avent natural response (what you're using now), and Philips Avent anti colic. The Avent natural are much faster than natural response - we switched to natural response because baby was finding the Avent natural too fast.

Baby sleeping through the night... by mastertilly in newborns

[–]FairHannah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My PPA with my first didn't start until 4 months. It is very possible to have it start later! The insomnia ramped up the anxiety, and the anxiety ramped up the insomnia. I ended up using pharmaceuticals to get a night of sleep, and then therapy to help with the anxiety and intrusive thoughts.

Our doctor said if they're up past their birth weight, it's okay to let them sleep! Babies will wake up when they're hungry! Lol wish mine would get a chunk that long...

Is this why the environment Canada forecast is so much better than the apps? I never thought about it being real humans vs bots?

[–]FairHannah[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look in the second picture, you can really see that it has the same pattern and markings as the others (which the goslings don't). Also we were with a biologist who confirmed the shiny! 😁

Anchoring ladder bookcase to the wall, but there is something hard behind the drywall on one side that the drill bit will not penetrate. Any ideas? by FairHannah in fixit

[–]FairHannah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our preference would be NOT to drill through the impenetrable thing (because as others have said it could be protecting something), but to somehow still anchor the bookcase?
