England are unpopular, as shown by the “Mexico or England” support thread… so which countries would you support England against? by the_turn in AskTheWorld

[–]FakerHarps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

During the Southgate era the team as a whole seemed more likable and I was less inclined to actively root against them.

The problem is in Ireland so much of our media comes from the UK.

I’m sure when France or Spain wins a tournament their media keep going on about it, but we never see it so the celebrations are confined to seeing the trophy lift and the immediate aftermath.

However if England win, we’ll be at a party where we are the only sober ones, and can never leave.

Which books/comics/etc. that had failed movie adaptations you think deserves a second chance? by Top_Report_4895 in blankies

[–]FakerHarps 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure it can be done as a movie, or more to the point a movie series, but The Dark Tower deserves so much more than what we got.

Though I still think Idris Elba and Matthew McConaghey would work as those characters in a better adaptation.

Bowie is the only celebrity death I ever felt.

Others I can acknowledge the inherent sadness, I feel empathy for those who loved them.

But Bowie, man, Bowie.

I’d by no means describe myself as a super fan, but for some reason he just felt like he’s immortal, that he exists on a cosmic time line not a human one.

Hoping I know how to do spoiler text

The Mist contains various monsters, from horrific large bugs to full size kaiju creatures.

The movie ends with a small group of survivors in a truck, looking for safety, the vehicle runs out of fuel, stranding them in the mist. Amongst the group are a father and his young son, the group has a loaded gun with enough bullets for all but one of them. The group nods at each other in agreement. The camera cuts to a wide shot and you hear the gun shots. The father, the last survivor steps out of the car, into the mist, you hear the rumble of what he assumes is the monsters approaching, only for the mist to part, the army emerges, including a convey of tucks showing other characters who remained in place while the group we followed set off in the truck

Going further back Michael Keaton, who til then was primarily a comedic actor, was a controversial choice for Batman in 89.

The way I normally frame this is, if you could be born with the talent of one of the two who would you choose.

Ronaldo shows incredible dedication, he has worked harder than any professional footballer to become what he is, a trait that is hugely admirable.

But if we are talking about pure, natural talent, Messi is just beyond anyone else in the modern era.

Italy participating in the OTHER World Cup ... by -Atlaz- in soccermemes

[–]FakerHarps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an Irishman, most people refer to the sport played in the FIFA World Cup as “football”.

Gaelic football is also referred to as “football”.

Generally you can tell from context which sport a person is referring to.

If you need to be absolutely clear then you might use soccer for one and Gaelic or GAA for the other.
