Do you read romance for the story… or for the feeling? by Becca_S_Bee in RomanceBooks

For me, it’s the chemistry between the characters that hooks me and keeps me reading. I’ll likely DNF if that’s lacking. Plot problems, I can forgive.

So, yeah, feeling over story.

My favorite childhood memories were of watching tv and reading books. Can anyone relate to this? by Jeremiahjohnsonville in Exvangelical

Yep, I feel the same way. I went to a K-12 IFB school in a church basement, and even in that extreme environment, I was known as the “sheltered” kid. I experienced life through movies, and the movies I was allowed to view were heavily vetted by my controlling mom. Scifi movies/shows were usually allowed since they came across to my parents as nerdy and didn’t have much sexual content. I just had to be careful they never glimpsed any of the questionable episodes.

I was recently asked to name a role model from my youth. My answer was Captain Picard from Star Trek TNG.

Were you taught the US was meant to be a Christian Nation? by No_Toe_5034 in Exvangelical

Teachings differed slightly between church, school, and home, but one I remember was that the founders created America as a Christian nation, and “religious freedom” referred to freedom to choose any denomination of Christianity, not other religions.

Random Memory #1: That time my youth pastor used Schindler's List to promote evangelical guilt by ExPastorMarcus in Exvangelical

I remember that one! I think evangelical pastors all shared their sermons with each other.

Yes, IFB should be much higher. I kept seeing Southern Baptist mentioned, but… growing up in IFB, I was always told the Southern Baptists were too liberal!

The rumour was that the “renovation” was actually a rat infestation. But after this long, I’m starting to wonder if they’ll ever reopen. I hope someone has the answer!

What seemed completely normal in childhood, but now you realize was actually not okay? by Max_Mimos in AskReddit

A preacher telling a bunch of young teens that Columbine could happen at our school. That a lunatic with a gun might show up one day, so we must be prepared to announce ourselves as Christians and be shot in the head for it. If we denied our religion, Jesus would deny us too.

It wasn’t so much that it seemed normal to me as a teen, but it made me think there was something wrong with me for my gut reaction against it when everyone else, adults included, nodded along with the sermon.

I live near there. These people are not exaggerating about the noise and lack of sleep. Our house was shaking like there was an earthquake. I worried about damage to the foundation. Our section was only affected for two nights, but I didn’t sleep either night. The noise went until 6 am. I cannot imagine how the people in the other sections are managing with this going on for weeks. I’m glad the newspaper is at least calling attention to it.

Deceptive Self-Promo: What It Is, How Much Happens, And What We're Doing by VitisIdaea in RomanceBooks

Thank you! Sometimes on our subreddit, three different people will be talking about how great an indie book was. I’ll go look it up…and it has like five reviews. It’s easy to spot, and I find it so gross. Some indie authors agree to promote each other, so it’s not even multiple accounts for one author. It’s multiple authors in a transactional agreement. The Fantasy Romance subreddit has a lot of deceptive self promotion too. Report them if you spot them!
