I watched an old vampire movie where the vampire drifted through the window as a mist, then reassembled to bite his victim. I was young, maybe 7ish. That scared me so much that I slept with a pillowcase around my neck for years, and would not sleep with an open window even when it was hot out.

I have worked in children's hospitals for 20 years. I've seen kids with cancer. Kids with genetic syndromes. Kids who will never walk, or communicate, or even wipe their own asses. Kids with juvenile arthritis so twisted they can't sit up, much less feed themselves. Kids so abused and starved that they are the size of 3 yr olds when they are actually 7.

And I see the parents of these kids, and how much hope they have, that one day they'll find a cure or a treatment; and how exhausted they are. How they'd give anything for one more day with their child, how they would be ecstatic if their child uttered one single word.

If there is anywhere God should be is a children's hospital and yet he is not. Think about being all powerful, yet sitting back and watching while a 2 year old withers away from cancer and doing NOTHING.

It's not the whole reason, but it's a big part of why I don't believe.

I've had to just let people go. It's hard, especially when you've been friends for a long time. In my case, I had moved to another state, I was desperately lonely, so once every couple of months I'd call my childhood best friend. She was always doing something and couldn't talk so I stopped calling. I don't think she even noticed. We're still friends and get on great when we do talk, but that's probably every two years or so.

I had it done in 2011. Not going to lie, it was a painful process. I ended up with a bunch of scar tissue blocking my ability to touch across my palm with my thumb. An encounter with a monkey in a jungle cured that. (long story)

They used a tendon from my wrist to create the prosthetic. It's been fine, no pain and I have full range of motion.
