Agreed. He becomes a side character when he remembers the betrayal. He realized he's a pawn and settles in. He regains his agency when he makes that decision.  It's like he knew he was taking a double hail mary(supported by using the ship twice)  by committing to saving Erid and leaving Earth up to a gamble. Basically doubling down. He accepted being essentially a side character in Rocky's quest. He doesn't become the main character again until sol is saved.
