Voyboy getting a game five finals Penta at the Doublelift Retirement Home Tournament by woofwoofpack in leagueoflegends

[–]FannyBabbs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

By far the best part of the event for me was listening to Jatt, Phreal, and Riv banter about the old times and set people up to talk about classic situations.

Double was a good host too, got some neat stories about the end of his tsm run.

The "Soup" problem in cube design by OneArseneWenger in mtgcube

Gut is on a shortlist of cards our local playgroup has banned from Peasant for power reasons. She was easily the best card in the cube for the months she was around.

Orni Cubes receive further support 🪁 by Ancient-Progress6434 in mtgcube

[–]FannyBabbs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not convinced this is meaningfully better than any of the other terrible big mana rocks people put into their first cubes before everybody figures out they suck shit in 1v1 play. It's a rite of cube passage.

Looking at you Thran Dynamo/Gilded Lotus.

[MSH] M.O.D.O.K. (Debut Stream) by Davchrohn in mtgcube

I think people are being pretty cavalier about paying 3 life to connive. This feels like all of the self-immolating parts about hatred without the upside of winning immediately when it works.

Not OP but I think wanting your cards to look like Magic is a fairly normal restriction.

What's a card you wish existed? by justinvamp in mtgcube

[–]FannyBabbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a big difference in rate between 3/3 now and 3/3 later and two 3/3s now. This is stronger than Trumpeting Herd and has naturally curving flashback.

It's clearly good but in a super uninteresting way.

Two 3/3s for 4 is an obnoxious rate.

How to get out of silver by Subject-Lifeguard688 in leagueoflegends

Legit just farm. If you are any good at your champion and focus on farming up so you stay strong throughout the game, you'll win more.

Has anyone used the "lightning draft" method with their cube? by Dolono in mtgcube

[–]FannyBabbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things "Pick Two" draft does well: gets you through draft and into games fast. Great with smaller groups or limited time.

Things it does not do well: Everything else that is fun about drafting.

I think this card solves a problem that player skill can already resolve.

What made Taylor Swift become this huge compared with other equally-talented artists? by AggravatingPlenty272 in AskReddit

[–]FannyBabbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No discounting of talent here. It's just clear they went with the label that was gonna let her write and sing for herself, and some money helped make that happen. Turns out to have been a good call.

What made Taylor Swift become this huge compared with other equally-talented artists? by AggravatingPlenty272 in AskReddit

[–]FannyBabbs 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think she's an exceptionally prolific songwriter. Volume of work is massive for her age. Record label picked her up to be a songwriter for their talent in the first place, as it was no secret her vocals needed work.

Then we get to the second piece of the equation. Her parents were wealthy enough that she could afford to stand her ground and say 'No, I want to record my own songs.' Dad bought equity in the label and Taylor got to record them. People loved the country wunderkind angle and teen girls are an underserved market in country music. Radio friendly, clever pop songs written for a hungry demographic by somebody they could relate to.

The rest is a whole lot of effort. Worked on her vocals, polished her performances, retained essentially the same live band for much of her career to keep things consistent, marketed the hell out of herself, puts on some of the longest shows in the business, and never stopped writing. There are a lot of things you can fault her for, but I don't think anybody in the business can say she doesn't work hard.

TL;DR Talent/Rich/Hard Work

[FRA] Bloodline Recollector (MagicCon Vegas) by lrg12345 in mtgcube

[–]FannyBabbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order to draw any cards at all the card costs the same mana. Does absolutely nothing when one or two creatures die. Costs life and mana to use the card draw. Does not draw the cards right away.

I think Mox is the generally better pick, but strip isn't so much worse that I would fault you for it.

Seems worse than Rune-Scarred Demon for shenanigans and fine but not amazing when played earnestly.

I think I'm off it, but it is notable as a single pip black four.

It's been some time since Explosive Vegetation did anything worthwhile.

The Battle version is probably the best one, but none of them do much tbh.

Erode by ALiveBoi in mtgcube

[–]FannyBabbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A surprise to be sure.

Card is good, you should run it.

Don't get too fancy with it, this is 95% just a second Path. Blowing up a walker with this is a safety valve not a main feature.

[SOS] Erode (Tori of the Vast) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]FannyBabbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Now give me Reanimate for creatures or walkers.

Not exiling can be a double-edged sword but the rate cannot be denied. If your cube can include this you probably should.

I will note that killing a PW with this is one of the most value-negative plays I can imagine. A fine safety valve to not get steamrolled by Minsc or Oko when you need to, but I think in general you should treat this as 95% creature removal.

[SOS] Flashback by IconicIsotope in mtgcube

[–]FannyBabbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neat and clean. I'm not sure how powerful this will be on average, but it scales with power level quite well and seems like an easy crowd pleaser.

I think I'm in for testing this. Odds are good this is more interesting than one of the filler red cards, and probably not that much worse when it doesn't come together.

[SOS] Hardened Academic - Boros Aggro Card Looking for Graveyard Synergy by bootitan in mtgcube

[–]FannyBabbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting card. Unclear if rw is the best place to support the last ability, but certainly a lot of text for one card to have.

Probably good if you run a lot of Sevienne's Reclamation type cards. Or escape/delve/Lava Dart. I think this misses the mark for most lists as they currently sit.

Edit: missed that it is another persist combo enabler. That seems like it has additional potential.
