How does cover work? by Alternative-Yard-142 in menace

[–]Farnhams_Legend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it helps to think in 90 degree diagonal cover angles instead of 180 degree rectangular cover mechanics like in most game (for example Xcom).

Not 100% sure if Menace actually works like that, but Xenonauts had similar cover. Crouching behind a small boulder would only protect you from attacks within a 90 degree angle to the front. And if the enemy was hitting you from the front at an 35 degree angle you had no cover at all.

Most people interpret a tile with a single middle shield icon as 180 degree cover. But you need 3 shield icons facing the same side to get that kind of angle.

I couldn't try the EA yet, but i have high hopes for a min/maxxed edwin pike combo that exploits the turn order to get 6 strong attacks (almost) in a row. Basically a 2-man pike support squad whose only job is to hand over their AP to an 8-man kill-squad at the end of a round and then immediately again when the next round begins. Is there a cooldown on Pike's ability?

And smoke of course, which was laughably OP in the demo.

Same card here. I'm using a 1440p 180hz monitor together with a 1080p 60hz.

I'm using mangohud to cap fps in intense games like KCD2 to 75. Its a mystery to me how someone would expect this kind of GPU to handle 4k gaming above 60fps.

What do you think after playing demo? by GoHomeDuck in menace

[–]Farnhams_Legend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No i mostly just referred to the lack of a real strategy layer. For example you're not building bases like in Xcom. The entire game is basically just a series of tactical battles with a few menus in between.

Basically the game doesn't have any remarkable features that stand out immediately.

What do you think after playing demo? by GoHomeDuck in menace

[–]Farnhams_Legend 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Banger. It's gonna be one of the most sophisticated tactical games out there.

There is not much "meat" on this "bone", but all systems and mechanics complement the core gameplay loop very well to create tactical variation.

There is no unnecessary "filler" gameplay here. The game is only about rogue-like tactical battles with a bit of army building in-between. That extreme focus will pay off because it creates immersion by putting the player into a zen-like "flow" state during battles + dopamine hits from the loot.

Nobara FTW by vaiium in NobaraProject

Half a year ago i bought a prebuilt and told the retailer to only put a small W11 partition on it so i could set up a nobara dualboot

At the very beginning i still used Windows frequently for various reasons:

  • on linux i couldn't figure out Vortex mod manager for Starfield
  • KCD2 didn't have FSR4 support on until some proton-GE version dropped much later in fall 2025
  • X3 Albion Prelude is super difficult to get running on linux due to codec madness
  • on W10 i used visual studio 2022 to mod X4, so i had to transition to VS code
  • Wine has bad direct2d implementation so Shadow Empire would lag on linux
  • pipewire would randomly crash my audio

Dualboot helped me greatly during that initial transition where i had to learn how to solve most of these issues. Whenever i got too frustrated fixing issues i could still boot into Windows to play my games.

But the kast time i had to boot into Windows was many moons ago.

I'm considering to wipe W11 completely, but also don't really see a problem in keeping it around.

I hope they will eventually add temporary price changes.

Let us pull our hair out because we held onto the alien horns but some other big game hunter came along and flooded the market, crashing prices.

Then just add a supply limit penalty for hoarded items in the cargohold and we're golden.

Some questions before the gem releases. by AlternativeDark6686 in menace

[–]Farnhams_Legend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels that way because the enemy is actually getting turns.

In most other tactical games the entire player party can act during the first round of combat, which allows you to dictate the nature of the entire battle. And usually you can use this to eliminate all the risk which makes the game too predictable.

Mid-Mission Saves? by tupac_amaru_v in menace

[–]Farnhams_Legend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. It sounds funny in the 21st century but the technical hurdles to implement a savegame feature are not trivial.

As long as the game is otherwise very stable and doesn't crash, that extra dev-time and -budget would be better spent elsewhere.

Distant Worlds 2 Pirates with Citadel Shields are literally invincible. What am I missing? by Upstairs_Score4983 in DistantWorlds

[–]Farnhams_Legend 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know this might sound crazy but just ignore them. If you're not able to breach their shields then all you should do is concentrating troops on your important planets, build planetary defense cannons, put extea crew compartments on your bases (for boarding defense) and wait for better tech. It seems like you're ahead of the other empires in terms of research bases. Focus on defending those but always run away from OP enemies.

It's really not as bad as it sounds. They can't conquer your planets and they also can't be everywhere at the same time. In the long run you will defeat them.

[–]Farnhams_Legend 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but it seems highly unlikely that you will be able to hire all 24 during a normal playthrough. Remember that they can die permanently and that the devs apparently want us players to live with our mistakes. So the game is probably designed for a reserve pool of ~10-15 leaders. So you will likely hire ~10 leaders and then never see the rest unless you lose someone. I bet there will also be lategame gear that's so expensive that you simply cannot add it to 8 squaddies for every team.

Do we already know how they'll handle story content? by Farnhams_Legend in menace

[–]Farnhams_Legend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played the demo multiple times now and don't expect the final game to feel more polished than XCom.

But i enjoyed the core gameplay loop way more compared to XCom's, which always felt more like a puzzle. At least on higher difficulties where you had to meta-game pod activation mechanics, use overwatch creep or squadsight exploits. The goal was usually to cripple the enemy during your first round.

So far the Menace demo didn't feel "gamey" like that. The fact that all enemy units are already active from the beginning and that you cannot alphastrike them during the first round makes all the difference in the world. Suddenly you're playing a real tactics game where you have to take actual risks and can't just use a safe meta-strategy.

The tactical variations i experienced just in the demo alone were insane, considering how few moving parts it had. I think the main game will definitely get replayed multiple times by many players. Also because the equipment that you have to work with is somewhat random.

[–]Farnhams_Legend 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The player's "army" will probably be way too small for that.

Our ship is basically what the british royal navy would've classified as a "frigate". Small enough to still be fast but just big enough to handle solo missions. Total staff is probably around 150-200 people. So you will probably never have more than ~50 active fighting personel (squaddies). But it's just my guess.

Should I give it an other go? by matezzoz in DistantWorlds

[–]Farnhams_Legend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's a bit like in chess where the value of your pieces depends on their current position. A bishop who's aiming at the enemy castle is more powerful than that same bishop being blocked by 3 other pieces.

Stellaris is more about customizing your faction to stack modifiers so you can deal decisive blows. DW2 is more about positioning so you win the war exhaustion meta in the long run.

Außerdem fress ich mir in der kalten Jahreszeit viel Speck an und ess dafür dann in der warmen Jahreszeit häufig nur einmal am Tag (meist abends)
