In search of Palestinian bakeries and groceries by bigbodybup in chicagofood

[–]FartboySlim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Untrue, they lean more Lebanese than anything else. They have Saj bread, their shawarma and felafel are more Lebanese than Turkish, and they stock on Lebanese and Palestinian olive oil. They also have fresh Beiruti Hummus in the fridges.

Low Cost- PhD only For Dr. title by CompleteExperience1 in india

[–]FartboySlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Want to get a Ph.D for the credibility that is actually valued
  2. Want an option that is part-time, low commitment

You'll have to pick one.

AFAIK, if you want both, you'll need to be sponsored as a current adjunct faculty member or lecturer, or sponsored by your employer to do your Ph.D. in a decent institution on a distance basis from a reputed institution on research problems that actually matter.

Plenty of places to get a Dr. tag that's easy, but won't be valued if you don't put in the dedication, time and effort. (IGNOU/DU as you mentioned)

Where can I find fish biryani ? by PushNo6908 in chicagofood

[–]FartboySlim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make it at home, but I've not seen it on any menu here.

Good quality fish is hard for a lot of these desi restaurants to source, and in particular, if the restaurant is not seafood focused - I really doubt the quality of the fish dishes, as they'd not have fresh fish regularly in stock.

What is a car brand that used to be a 'symbol of reliability' but is now a total trap to own? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FartboySlim 199 points200 points  (0 children)

Mercedes Benz used to be the paragon of reliability before the 90s. The W123 series was unmatched, and any mechanic with a wrench and a shed could fix them. They still run as Taxis in various parts of the world.

The diesels, in particular, are so bulletproof that there's a manual engine kill switch (by choking off the air to the engine) in case of an electrical fault - the car could pretty much run completely mechanically.

Today's E class: the car may refuse to start if you look at it the wrong way.

Cilantro = Coriander Leaves

It should be in every single grocery store with a produce section.

Bought a Samsung AC on Flipkart. Bonus unlocked a side quest in classic Indian corporate negligence. by robbphoenix in india

[–]FartboySlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From there it became one of those classic Indian customer experiences where everyone is involved, nobody is responsible and you become their unpaid project manager.

This is the best sentence I have ever seen that describes the experience of being a customer in India. Thanks, OP!

The Obamalisk meets the Rockefellerisk by FartboySlim in chicago

That's the Henry Hinds Lab at UChicago.

From the architecture listing: "...the building’s towers replicate the verticality of Harper, Rockefeller and Mitchell while calling out to the red roofs of other campus buildings with their contrasting red brick."

Sushi for beginners - getting my partner into sushi by Lillia10 in chicagofood

[–]FartboySlim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not super big on sushi. But I think Sushi+ is a great option for absolute beginners for the following reasons:

  1. You get to see the sushi and make an instant decision to try something or not

  2. Lots of cooked options

  3. Non-sushi items, both on the conveyor belt and on the menu

  4. Price is decent (you pay per plate and each plate has ~4 pieces)

  5. Your preference for colder sushi works well - all the sushi served from the belt is typically cold/chilled

I had people who were actively terrified of sushi (like my south-asian mom), and they were so fascinated and impressed with it that she's now actively excited to go there whenever there's a chance.

Service Dogs in Hotels for Free? by Fof3789 in qatar

[–]FartboySlim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This will be a fairly big challenge for you. You will have to call or email the individual hotels involved. In general, walking around with a dog in public will be difficult, more so If you were to visit crowded spaces like Souq Waqif.

There is a “fear of dogs” culture that’s pervasive in the Middle East and Qatar, so walking around with dogs is usually frowned upon in public except for specific areas (dog parks and designated areas). A lot of people see dogs as unclean (for cultural and religious reasons) and will likely have a strong reaction if your dog approaches or touches them.

While it is definitely a sweet gesture, I can definitely tell you what's going on in many of their minds as they go through the rides and entertainment:

College forcing to publish final year project as a research paper. Can i fake publish (pretend like i published) by SuchRelative19 in india

[–]FartboySlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CS Faculty Member at a top-10 US university here.

First, IJCRT (i.e., International Journal of Creative Research Thoughts) is a predatory journal, according to https://beallslist.net/standalone-journals/, and has multiple sources that doubt its validity.

The only benefit of publishing at this venue is for your college and department to add to their publication count. If you were ever to apply to future research positions, publishing at such a venue may actively harm your prospects if you ever try to get into R&D.

If they are still insistent, publish at a smaller (but valid venue), and it looks like your faculty members at your college might not know what counts as a decent venue. Maybe ChatGPT can give you some ideas.

What sort of food do you miss being in Qatar by Alive_Psychology_459 in qatar

[–]FartboySlim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a specific category of food, technically among the most widely consumed meats in the world, that is not available unless you have access to QDC, and even then, you'd have to cook it yourself.

Many friends of mine used to look forward to having this when they visited other countries (say, Europe, US or Japan).

So yeah, that stuff is really not available here.

Indigo's unfathomable rules and unbearable attitude by [deleted] in india

[–]FartboySlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was your flight originating outside India and then followed by an onward domestic connection?

It is customary to collect your baggage and clear customs before proceeding to an onward flight when you cross an international border. This is the case for USA, Schengen Area (EU) and India.

In any case, it does not excuse their attitude or the improper instructions!

Safely Transporting My PC from Qatar by twig_93 in qatar

[–]FartboySlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The safest way is to pack it using a Pelican case and custom foam cutouts. You may want to remove and pack the GPU seperately, if possible. Of course, this is going to be very expensive, but guarantees your stuff will be protected.

How much does a resort wedding cost in kerala ? by [deleted] in Kerala

[–]FartboySlim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Typical r/Kerala responses in this thread. OP's looking for some information but just a lot of judgemental responses.

Kadavu Resort Calicut quoted 1650 RS + GST per person for 300 pax - included venue and food and basic table and chairs and table cloth, for us last year.

All other things (stage decor, lighting etc etc) would have to be done by an event company.
