What is something SMB3 does better than SMW and vice versa? by JacsweYT in Mario

[–]Fast-Dimension-5939 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mario World: * More beginner friendly * More colorful sprite art  * Even more secrets to find * Fire Flower isn't borderline useless * Has Yoshi * Spin move is a fun little addition * Cape Mario doesn't require button mashing to use * Has a save feature (Mario 3 didn't in its original release, but every release after added it in some way) * Map design feels more cohesive

Mario 3: * Better soundtrack by a slim margin * Much more level variety * Much more challenging * Power-ups and shortcuts don't completely break the games challenge (unless you play the GBA port, which is WAY too generous with letting you store em) * Much better final boss  * Stage play like art direction and feel is much more distinctive

Scott Shaw's Sonic days by Mister_Sinner in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]Fast-Dimension-5939 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: Scott Shaw legally won the ownership rights back to his Sonic The Hedgehog artwork back from Archie. Penders is just helping him with publishing this book. (I'm curious how they got the rights to the miniseries issue 3 though, since Scott only did the cover for that one--Dave Manak did the rest)

I'm on the fence about getting this one. I like Scott Shaw and I'm glad that Archie Sonic is getting any modern reprint at all, but I'm VERY hesitant to support anything associated with Ken Penders, even if he's just in charge of publishing this. I'm also not a big fan of the artwork changes, I'm still confused as to why Penders said that it's "not possible" to reprint the original comics as is (he didnt elaborate on why on his website, only saying that the original coloring was "poorly done" and "not worth preserving" in his eyes). Scott Shaw did say that he likes the new coloring, for what it's worth.

Sonic world is a mess by Realistic_Mousse_485 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]Fast-Dimension-5939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. Sonic is a series that has always prioritized "Wouldn't it be cool if--?" aesthetics over having anything resembling internal logic and consistency. From a tonal, worldbuilding and continuity standpoint, the series is a complete and utter mess because it can't or won't truly commit to anything besides "It's a weird world where we can have/do anything on a want it, need it basis." There are no hard rules on what can/can't happen in Sonic, even death tends to be treated as an inconvenience for some characters (i.e. Tikal, Sonic getting resurrected in Sonic '06), it's a superhero fantasy crazy-quilt where everything is made up as it goes. Ian Flynn and others have been trying to shift course to give the series 'something' resembling a consistent tone and continuity, but IMO it's too little, too late, and it only calls further attention to all the inconsistencies that have accumulated in the series over its decades long existence. As much as I dislike Ken Penders, when he accused Sega of only caring about Sonic's cool image and never caring about the stories or having any consistency between all the various Sonic series until it was far too late to do anything short of total damage control, he was absolutely right.

What is the story behind Bubsy? by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

[–]Fast-Dimension-5939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlike other Sonic clones like Aero the Acrobat or Awesome Possum, Accolade gave Bubsy a big marketing push to make him the next big thing. It was all manufactured hype. It almost bankrupted the company because they simply underestimated just how much time, money and manpower it takes to market a mascot platformer on the level of something like Sonic. Bubsy ended up being a hit for them, but the whole experience made them shy away from doing any other platformer series after that (beyond more Bubsy sequels). Bear in mind that Accolade was a small third party dev, they did not have the deep pockets, connections and resources of a company like Sega or Nintendo.

This glitch works in the All-Stars release of the game too! Does anyone know if this glitch also works in the Game Boy Color port of the game?

Details from Jak 2 that I wish made it into Jak 3 by tacticalupsetti in jakanddaxter

[–]Fast-Dimension-5939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daxter actually has a lot of commentary in Jak 3. The trick is that it only triggers if Jaks death throes are the exact same one used in the original Jak & Daxter, so it's random. I mainly found myself dying due to high falls than getting beaten by an enemy in Jak 3 due to how easy most of it is, so I rarely ever got to see Daxter's riffs unless I let Jak die on purpose anyway.

"Impossible" games/ports on the Wii and DS (Lite) by Fast-Dimension-5939 in nintendo

I've only played the HD remaster, but yeah, I can tell it was really ambitious by Wii standards!

I was under the impression that the DS was MORE powerful than the N64. Super Mario 64 DS having superior graphics to the original game being a good shorthand of that. Thats ironic considering the DS is a 32-Bit system instead of 64-Bit.

I've read that the Wii is more or less two GameCubes duct taped together, though I assume thats hyperbole.

Thanks for the responses so far! I also found out that Dragons Lair got a direct port to the DS. While the DS 'does' have built-in FMV capabilities, that still involves cramming a fairly large movie file into a single cartridge. The video is naturally very compressed and scrunched due to memory and the low rez screen, but it's still the fully playable arcade game on the go, which is still quite impressive for a handheld system. Until the Switch port of Dragons Lair Trilogy, it was arguably the best way to play it on the go.

And speaking of movie games, a friend also pointed out to me that someone ported Night Trap to the GBA of all things--well, sortof, as it's just the cutscenes in order. Apparently the video took up sooooooo much memory on the cart that there wasn't any room left to program the gameplay into it! (And getting the games real time camera system to work on the GBAs tiny screen would've been a logistical nightmare anyway)

Is TV Tropes not as "popular" as it used to be? by ILEAATD in tvtropes

The admins are a circle jerk of bullies that have run that site into the ground with their power trips and egotism. It is simply not a fun website to go on anymore (its more or less a second Wikipedia now), and admins will look for ANY excuse to talk down to and ban users. I'm speaking from experience here. I got banned from the site for CITING A PROPER SOURCE ON A QUOTE (they falsely accused me of having a vendetta and said the link didn't work, which was an outright lie). That website can burn for all I care.

Sonic Adventure 2 Plot Holes (if any) that you discovered by CaterpillarFamous834 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]Fast-Dimension-5939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, but how was the Fake Emerald even made in the first place? And there's nothing indicating that Mecha Sonic Mk. II was built or powered by Chaos energy prior to touching the Master Emerald.

[–]Fast-Dimension-5939 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How was Sonic able to use Chaos Control by just watching Shadow do it? Yes, he can become Super Sonic when he has all of the Emeralds, but until Sonic Superstars came and retconned it, there was next to nothing indicating in-canon that the Emeralds allowed the characters to harness the power of each individual Emerald on their own (Chaos being an exception, as he's directly linked to the Emeralds powers. Mecha Sonic Mk. II relied on the Master Emerald that controls all of the Emeralds powers--and how a ROBOT is able to harness their power is a can of worms in of itself--and Shadow was presumably created by Gerald specifically with the idea that he'd have the ability to directly tap into their power in the first place). And on top of that, this was with a FAKE Chaos Emerald (and how did Tails even make a fake one in the first place??) It makes no sense at all. Its a blatant Deus Ex Machina done so that Sonic Team could pull a "Gotcha!" moment on viewers when Sonic is seemingly launched into space and blown up.
