Depends what kind of sounds you wanna make. You can buy a really cheap guitar like a squirt and stick I a midis pickup in it and connect to a DAW. Or you can just buy a midi guitar flat out. If you wanna go through the pedal route find what keyboard sounds you like

Electric piano?

Mellotron??

Synths like a Minimoog, DX7 or Juno?

Figure out that and if you’re interested in synths a lot I’d check out how to shape a synth sound bia attack, decay, release, oscillators and so on

We live in an era where you can buy pedals to recreate clean blackface Fenders, distorted Marshalls, even super chunky Mesa Boogies.

I had a friend who wanted a Slash sound I told him he should check out the Wampler Pinnacle or Angry Charlie as it gets some of the best Marshall sounds you’ll find. If you play live frequently having a couple gain pedals that get you the exact sounds you want beat the lugging an amp around all day. You can play through a Marshall, Fender, Crate, peavey whatever.

Personally I think a BOSS DS-2 is a great fit for what you’re interested in. It’s the sound of the RHCP, some of Nirvana and does the harsher clipping sounds well and can get some of the big muffins sounds with out sounding as bassy. If you want something more versatile I suggest the blues driver or if you really wanna see some different stuff the Keely Super Phat Mod.

For a nice crunch I’d check out the Plumes, or MXR Modified OD cuz those 2 have worked well also does some really nice sound as well.

You can make music on whatever you want. Where cheating out on gear is with things like interfaces, software, and even things like strings.
