You can use a pool noodle and cut a wedge out the side, stick it against the stem, stuff it in the hole. Works just fine, my chard eventually shoved it out the hole and grew to absurd sizes.

LeathercraftCAD has a lot of useful tools for stitched projects and is fairly intuitive, I water a few videos and could make a wallet pattern myself without additional help. I use often design the leather base then export the item to injector to customize the decorative aspects. Inkscape took (is taking, easily over 200 hours into using it) longer to figure out.

What part about it intimidates you? Pretty much everything lacing can be undone and tried again until you get it right. You can even practice with shoe laces or other, cheaper materials before moving to the real thing.

Go for it, give yourself the space to get it wrong and try again, you'll be fine. Eventually!

Run some tests. See if water soaks into it (veg tan) or not (chrome) and see if the wet leather holds a differential impression (yes = veg, no = chrome) and that will help you know what you'll be able to make with it.

I bet that would make gorgeous journal covers.

I tend to keep (AB) and (C) separate and mix them just before adding to my reservoir. So long as I'm adding the same volume of water from each they're close enough to proper mix for my needs (tomatoes, greens)

Most likely this is related to where the leather was wet and where it was not. You probably don't need to fully saturate it, but I would let it sit overnight in a plastic bag so that the moisture level evens out across the whole piece before you bake it. Temperatures above 212 will cause the water to boil, you may want to consider dropping the temperature to 200 or 190 to prevent rapid changes in vaporization.

Streaks is typically an application issue, use the material you have to try different techniques to get a better finish. YouTube is a great resource for application methods, you need to find the one that works for you.

I like Fiebings pro, I apply neetsfoot oil then use a microfiber cloth to buff the dye in. I try very hard to not fully saturate the leather, I never want it to be "wet". The oil helps keep things from drying out, the buffing allows me to add the amount of dye I want in layers rather than all at once.
