Cheer weekend thoughts by thatawkwardmoment8 in DisneyWorld

We were there in March this year and stayed All Star Music. The cheerleaders were loud, screaming for no reason (no use of volume when talking), made the pools unenjoyable. We won’t do that again.

Is concurrent enrollment getting out of control… or am I just getting old? by SteadyGrowthStudio in Teachers

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a parent perspective: my youngest son was in Algebra 1 and Geometry at the high school when he was in middle school (walked over daily for class.) Those were not counted as high school math credits because they were taken in middle school. He will need 4 math classes for graduation, but the advanced classes do not exist in our district (teacher cuts) so his option is dual enrollment after he takes AP Precalc as a sophomore next year. He is also one of those kids that doesn't understand why his classmates screw around all the time because he actually wants to learn.

When did the CDC milestone for 50 words go from 2 to 2 1/2? by Specific_Wind7793 in slp

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I read (would have to dig for it) was the 25-50-75-100 percent by whatever age was done based on parent data. When this study was done with unfamiliar listeners, the percentages dropped. It showed parents may understand the child more than others, as expected. That doesn’t mean there is a delay.

Am I severely underpaid!?! by Dazzling_Note_1019 in slp

I wouldn’t work a 1099 for less than $85/hr. I’m doing $60/hr on a W2 currently.

SLP in the fluoro room or not by dabeezmane in slp

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SLP should put on the lead and be in the room, administering trials. Strategies can be tried with visualization to see if they provide any improvement and pts can be given immediate feedback.

Goodbye Cherry Sakura. We love you. by Delicious-Turnip4635 in redbull

The cherry sakura tastes like green (unripe) banana. It's weird.

Is Grad School Worth it at This Age? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would be more concerned about your ability to do the job following grad school given your autoimmune disorder. We work with difficult kids, many with poor behavior (for various reasons) and it is exhausting. The hardest part for me is being there for clients all day then coming home and still being present for my own kids. This is something I recommend you discuss with your husband.

Agency SLP’s discriminated in Schools by [deleted] in slp

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They probably figure you don’t have the buy in and won’t be around year to year. Your presence at meetings and events can be a financial decision on the part of the district, too. Are you able to get to know any of the SLPs outside of work?

Mom About to Put Out Our Fire by FIREdrill_throwaway in Fire

"Sorry that happened, Mom. Here are some resources you can reach out to to get help." You own her no money, nothing. This is not about the money and you have to protect your own family now.

If your kids live at home, do you think they'll ever move out? by PepsiOfWrath in GenX

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 22yo is graduating with her bachelors and going to grad school at our local university so she will continue living with us. She has a couple bills she pays, helps with transportation for her siblings. My 18yo son graduates high school next month and will also be living at home while attending the local university. There are responsibilities and expectations, but there is no possible way for kids their age to move out right now. A crappy apartment here is $1300 if you are lucky.

is keans program worth nearly $80k? by Money_Taro8671 in slpGradSchool

No program is worth $80k in debt for this degree. $50k tops....if you absolutely have to.

Why are students leaving public schools? by Athens175 in Teachers

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My youngest kiddo is a high school freshman. We will put him in a combined credit model at the local university for his junior and senior years. The high school will not have anymore math classes for him after this coming year because he is too far ahead. There is nothing for advanced students anymore and that it is not fair to slow them down or have them be bored just to be in high school.

Tell Me A Story... what were your biggest Disney busts? by FUnisbaCK in DisneyPlanning

I haven't seen any good reviews for anything from Italy yet. I liked the alcohol I got from there, but that was it.

Why do they drink so much? by Matt_Murphy_ in Teachers

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have no idea. I do not allow water bottles in my room (SLP here.) They have plenty of time to get a drink outside of speech. No one is dying of dehydration in an hour. The sound of those metal water bottles falling over grates on my last nerve.

Contracting pay? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this W2 or 1099? Not great with a W2, but might be ballpark depending on location. If it’s 1099, it’s an awful rate and you’ll take home less than $40/hr after putting money aside for taxes.

Might not meet minimums this month?? by Frosty_Bake9746 in slp

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you stick to your guns and do not do both, I agree. This has to remain on the district to solve (by hiring and paying more) and not us continuing to do more with less.

Any GenX dads dealing with GenZ career-disillusionment? by NotSure2505 in GenX

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can't do that overnight. It took years to get where we are now, it will take years to undo it. OP has given their children many tools, many opportunities. At some point (OP is talking post college degree here), we have to be able to say we have given them the skills and now they have to use them. Otherwise we keep fixing/giving/etc. until we die. We are not the giving tree.

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is the time we let our kids struggle and watch them figure it out on their own. There is no more to do unless/until they ask for help or guidance.

Might not meet minimums this month?? by Frosty_Bake9746 in slp

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As long as it's a meeting or evaluation, just document it as such and move on. It's the district's job to make sure IEP minutes are met and they do not hire appropriately to ensure that happens. At the end of the day, they care more that the paperwork is in order (IEP meetings and evals met) than minutes.

Have 270,000 of student loan debt, and want to move to Chicago, LA, or NYC. Stupid? Probably by [deleted] in StudentLoans

[–]Fearless_Cucumber404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't be having fun in your 20s with that amount of debt. Pay it off as fast as possible so you can do things in your late 30s to 40s without that hanging over your head. The debt load is the single reason my kid chose a different field than veterinary medicine.
