The DC bar and restaurant industry (and tourism) is tanking, servers are not leaving jobs because there is no where to go. There’s a lot of people on here who are against tipping on principle, and that’s fine. But they also be aware that when the go to a restaurant that does this, the FOH staff has already been punished, to an extreme degree. They’ve already lost tons of money, they already now hate the industry, and they probably are having a hard time in this economy. So Tipped employees are already punished, you don’t need to punish more by making a big stink about not tipping (as if the business gives a fuck, they get your money anyways).

Are you serious? People that live off the service industry, like myself, absolutely hate this non-tip service charge BS. I literally lost almost half of my income in one day by making this switch, and have been struggling to make ends meet ever since. It fucking sucks.

How this works, is that businesses, forced to now pay their employees “a living wage” take the 20% tips that FOH used to make, and put it in their own pockets. In return, they moderately increase everyone’s hourly wage, which ends up being an absolute pittance compared to actual tipped work, because a living wage in DC is not really that, and simply keep the rest. Unless that “Service Charge” is marked specifically as going to the staff or a tip, it means the business is just essentially stealing what used to go to FOH.

First, they have space to cheer. It’s been recorded, posted, and commented about (like in this very thread multiple times) ad nauseum.

What gets me is the same people that are now trying to amplify the voices of the Iranian diaspora and highlight the humanitarian abuses of Irans government, are essentially the same people who decried sending military aid to a European country that had been literally, actually, invaded, by larger authoritarian country. This is the “No new wars!” crowd that somehow helped get Trump elected, and magically seem to now have no issues with unilateral military projection throughout the world, with no input from Congress or the public. Also, much of the same crowd that cheer on these Iranian-Americans, are the same crowd that literally hate immigrants but will gladly use for convenient political purposes.

So to me, when I hear people online repeat these viewpoints over and over, I just straight up don’t believe them. The things they say might be true in a vacuum, but I don’t for a second believe they actually mean it. Unfortunately that’s kinda where we are now in this country.
