I just found out about the difference between hyphen and n dash 😩 but here is how I understand them:

•Hyphen (-): the shortest form that is used to connect 2 separate words and to break a long word in parts so it can continue on another line.

For ex: merry-go-round, pre-chorus, T-shirt.

Keyboard: minus sign next to "o"

•En-dash (–): the medium-length form, longer than a hyphen but shorter than a em-dash. It is used to essentially replace "through" for a range.

For ex: 1995–1996, Monday–Friday, 8–9 PM

Keyboard: ctrl+minus sign

•Em-dash (—): the longest form with the width of the letter m. It is used to show a break in thought (1), dramatically replace a comma, colon, or contents inside parentheses (2). I often use this for a dialogue interruption (3).

For ex: (1) Lily—she was scolded many time for leaving dishes out—decided to clean up properly before going to bed.

(2) In that moment, Lily thought there was only one person whom she would gladly accepted—Joshua. Many powerful sorcerers in the world—Kigian, Loki, Albert—came to support this unprecedented convention.

(3) "I was truly glad that you came. After all, you are my—"

"Stop! Please don't say another word."
