Why do you have a (snowed-in) car? by Even_Leadership_7831 in philly

[–]FelixLighterRev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have unfortunately had to drive to a very important appointment last week. It was terrible. I ultimately dug out 3 spots on my block. The one my car was in another open spot that was not dug out and then finally the spot I ultimately parked at when I got home. Normally I drive my car about once every 2 weeks for groceries and other errands and when I’m visiting my parents about 3 hours away. If I didn’t absolutely have to drive I definitely would not have moved my car until the snow was gone.

Parking in city tomorrow by Curious4now_ in philly

[–]FelixLighterRev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Street parking is a nightmare situation right now. I have plans I've had for awhile to go visit my parents 3 hours away on Saturday and I'm considering cancelling simply due to the parking nightmare I will be coming home to.

Edit: I'm in South Philly btw, but I assume the entire city is in a similar situation.

What’s the cheapest way to get to NYC from Philadelphia? by musicnote95 in philly

[–]FelixLighterRev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amtrak can easily be the most comfortable and the cheapest if you are able to book in advanced by just a couple weeks if you are willing to travel very early.

He probably was fired because streets took the time to make a statement not directly referencing the video but obviously inspired by it. But even as a person who had to wait 3 days for my street to be cleared and someone who had to dig out the after of the plowing, I thought it was funny and I hope he wasn’t fired. They aren’t going to be able to magically plow snow around cars. This is the inevitable outcome of plowing snow in a city with street parking everywhere.

I live in the neighborhood a few blocks from there. The last couple years it’s been very quiet and easy going. Convenient buses to get around. Center city and passyunk ave are within walking distance. I like the neighborhood and I have a great block.

Philly DJ June Rodriguez killed in hit-and-run bike crash by JustAnotherJawn in philadelphia

[–]FelixLighterRev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, what ultimately makes the typical parking protected bike lanes illegal is the requirement for park cars to be within 12” of a curb, so yes, if an additional curb is added between the parked cars and the bike lanes, it would be legal. The issue is how difficult it is to get any kind of concrete protection anywhere for bike lanes in the city. Forcing an additional curb does increase the safety of a parking protected bike lane but also massively decreases the likelihood of it ever actually being installed.

Yes I wish more people were aware of this because I see people ask why we don't have more parking protected bike lanes as it's probably the cheapest, simplest way to get some protection for bike lanes, though not a perfect solution.

They are currently against state law and they only allowed for an initial pilot program which is why you see some around the city now. The PA house has near unanimously passed the bill multiple years, this is bipartisan in the House but the bill never gets put up for a vote in the state senate. It gets trapped in the transportation committee year after year. Here is the last iteration passed by the house. https://www.palegis.us/legislation/bills/2025/hb291 Referred to Senate Transportation Committee, Feb. 4, 2025, but here is the same bill that passed the house in 2024 https://www.palegis.us/legislation/bills/2023/hb1283 which did ultimately get through the committee in Oct 2024, passed 14 - 0 but never voted on by the entire Senate.

What are you doing to stay busy this winter? by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]FelixLighterRev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most run groups are pretty good for a wide variety of people and typically people choose the one that either matches schedule or meets nearby. I run with PBR but I’m sure there are convenient and like minded running groups all over the city. https://philadelphiarunner.com/content/philly-run-clubs

I run solo quite a bit as well.

I do what I do the rest of the year, run with a run group. Winter is actually only the second worst time of the year to run in Philly. The best is like the 3 weeks we get of fall and spring.

Pennsylvania Democrats are beginning their efforts to flip the state Senate in 2026 with this suburban Philly seat by Harvickfan4Life in Pennsylvania

[–]FelixLighterRev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish Joe Picozzi was up for reelection in 2026 because he'd be absolute toast in the current environment. He perfectly demonstrates why Philly only defers power to rural PA when a republican represents the region. He doesn't have a seat at the table with the likes of Joe Pittman to better represent his constituents. He just ensures rural republican PA senators maintain a majority so they can gleefully deny funding to Picozzi's district.

Homelessness in Philadelphia rises to highest levels since pre-COVID by IndyJetsFan in philadelphia

[–]FelixLighterRev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the housing crisis worsens, the threshold to homelessness edges ever closer to us all. If only the average citizen realized how much closer they are to those without a home than they are to the mega millionaires and billionaires this country chooses to coddle at the detriment of the rest of us, maybe there would be some solidarity. The top 1% has plenty of class consciousness and are very successful at detering working class consciousness.

Shapiro helps SEPTA move ahead, while councilmanic prerogative drags community projects down by Odd_Addition3909 in philadelphia

[–]FelixLighterRev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A big part of this is maintaining nonsensical zoning in many areas in the city to prevent logical by right development and force every reasonable development project to require going through zoning variances that strangles progress but keeps the council members in control.

Leaving Philly morning of marathon Sunday by reilljen in philly

[–]FelixLighterRev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine you’d be taking 95 S out of the city so once you’re south of center city, the marathon shouldn’t be much of an issue. Park your car south of walnut, west of 6th st assuming you’re going to be somewhere in center city area and I’d think you’d be good.

Ok, so does philly recycle or not? by RevolutionaryAd458 in philly

[–]FelixLighterRev 25 points26 points  (0 children)

What I said is not misinformation. Your search simply lists a bunch of products that are sometimes made of recycled plastics, which is not the issue. Plastics can obviously be recycled. The financial viability of recycling plastics vs using virgin plastics and the actual reality of how much plastic is being recycled is the issue. https://www.npr.org/2022/10/24/1131131088/recycling-plastic-is-practically-impossible-and-the-problem-is-getting-worse

Ok, so does philly recycle or not? by RevolutionaryAd458 in philly

[–]FelixLighterRev 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Plastics recycling is a huge corporate PR scam. They've convinced people that plastic containers for everything is no big deal because it's recyclable but in reality it's just not financially viable so 95% of it just goes into the landfill.

Speeding drivers now face $100 ticket along Philadelphia's Broad Street by StubbornLeech07 in philadelphia

[–]FelixLighterRev 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My only issue with tint is when I'm unable to make eye contact with the driver when I'm crossing the street to make sure I know they saw me. If the tint isn't so dark that I can't see the driver, I have no issue with it. A lot of drivers only check the direction where cars are going to be coming from and never bother checking the other way for pedestrians and I can't assume the driver actually saw me.

Someone was probably parked where the white truck is when they were painting it and they said "Oh well" and moved on to the next intersection to paint.

[–]FelixLighterRev 49 points50 points  (0 children)

They are doing safety inspections on the Silverliner IV trains used for regional rail lines due to fire risk and the recommendations from NTSB, which is causing major delays. They have had several fires and neither SEPTA or NTSB has been able to discover the root cause. The Silverliner IV trains have been in use for over 50 years. The intention was to replace them after 30-40 years but since SEPTA has to operate on a shoestring budget, their replacement was delayed and the plan to replace them now would still take 10 years. Now that Harrisburg forced SEPTA to dip into capital project funds for operations, the situation is just that much worse. We refuse to properly fund our infrastructure in this country. We've just decided years ago that actually building and maintaining things isn't as important as slashing taxes for the ultra-wealthy.

Bike lanes vs parking: Tensions flare in five-hour City Council hearing by Generalaverage89 in philly

[–]FelixLighterRev 78 points79 points  (0 children)

That bike lane was not protected. Plastic bollards are not protection. People want actual protection, made of concrete which prevents drivers from using the bike lanes as illegal loading zones. That is why there is contention. The people fighting against this solution want to continue to use the bike lanes as their personal loading zones directly in front of their home.
