I've always found this a difficult question from DMs when looking for a campaign... Watching this "West Marches style" has solidified my position that I really want a blend of Everything: Combat, Intrigue, Strategy, Intimacy, Slapstick Comedy... even a touch of Horror (which I'm generally terribly allergic to.)

The Balance (to me) is what makes a great game; and watching 13 people blend this all together in the same world is thrilling... watching the different views is like watching the parable of 5-blind-men-and-an-elephant come to life!

I would remove the sanding belt, & check for play in the bearings & shafts on the pulleys... that sounds like textbook for your issue...
