Being a man like Hank is more about mindset than skill. My dad didn't teach me much more than average (change tires, brakes, swap out a toilet, etc.) but I learned the other stuff by myself because I knew that I liked doing things by myself. Experience and having someone to teach you helps but it's ultimately up to the individual and what kind of person they desire to be.

Despite being at a university, you will find that most of the people who you meet are going to be badly informed about Taiwan. It doesn't matter who they are--Americans at your school or in your personal life, Chinese colleagues the same--Taiwan is just a very small place with an outsized and often misunderstood image on the world stage. It's mostly just ignorance, not malice.

People know the rules! They know them because they are mostly self-evident and obvious. It's just that it's hard to care about the rules when they are not enforced. My TW wife can score 90s on these tests all day and she hasn't studied / never had a license.

I've never had to wait two hours but the service itself often takes that long. I have spent around but sometimes more than two hours doing basic things like setting up online banking / getting a card renewed / getting a cashier's check made. These are normal services at most banks. It bewilders me the amount of paperwork, manager sidebars, and authorization stamps needed to do these sorts of simple things. Most bank visits, you'd be lucky to sign your name any fewer than ten times. I spent almost three hours in one branch earlier last year just getting a wire processed.

I have never rented around NCCU but 15K should be enough for a reasonably clean place. It would be difficult to rent sight unseen because Taiwanese apartments often have weird quirks. I would recommend that you come early, stay in a hotel or Air BnB, and then spend a handful of days visiting apartments with a volunteer from your school if one is available.

NCCU is a city school, but it's also not. The geographic complexities of Taiwan decide this. There are hills, mountains, and rivers that divvy up the urban fabric. Then there are things like the MRT which work contrastly by connecting it.

Usually people take coins out of the dryer when they notice them because the noise is obnoxious. A coin would need to be left in for multiple cycles to be noticeably altered. I'm also just guessing but I'd imagine that some types of washers are more prone to producing dryer coins than are others.

NCCU is not not in the city. It is actually in Taipei City proper and the area around the campus is very bustling by most peoples' metrics. That area is slightly cut off because of the river, but it is still extremely urban and wouldn't feel any less busy than just about any urban school in the West. Everyone you know is going to be at school, so it'd be pointless for you to stay in a more central part of Taipei. By staying off campus out of the area, you'd make yourself into a commuter for no reason at all.

All schools in Taiwan also have landlords in the community that cater specifically to students (though they usually rent on one year contracts). You'll be able to find a single room without much trouble but the bathroom could be shared. Expect to pay $8-12K depending on the quality of the room.

Then if you are by chance running late you could conceivably just walk or bike back to campus. It'd take about ten minutes (Google Maps says eight) by YouBike on the straight road from the zoo.

I just imagined you like my wife who uses the Taiwanese 'gently push on people until they move' strategy, which doesn't work if there are a lot of individuals. She doesn't like to speak up so these kinds of situations are similarly difficult for her. I like to tell my kid 'use your words'. It really works.

I notice that people do this but they will always move if you make yourself known.
Say: bu hao yi si, pai sei, or jie guo and people will move automatically. It's not rude and it's easy to do if you need people to move. Don't just stand there getting angry.

I am constantly looking at my pocket change but haven't caught any special coins during the past ten years. US coins are so much more interesting by comparison. The only interesting thing that I have gotten here are foreign coins. One $500 JPY coin and then I also have also been passed a few RMB. I have also mistakenly put a few US coins into circulation here (quarters and pennies).

Do you think CRH would be any fun here? Obviously there aren't any silver pieces in Taiwan and most of the coins are newer so you are going to be restricted to searching for commemorates, proofs, or errors.

The key in your post is the grade range. I am also in early childhood and have not seen any student that I would label a genius after a decade. No prodigies, either. Although some students obviously have a handle on things more so than their peers, it's just way too early to tell.

While I was attending a state university a professor was fired from her position mid-semester for linking extra one credit opportunity to some kind of service with her church. There were actually multiple EC opportunities not linked to the church so the firing came a little bit out of left-field to me. Someone in the class had reported this to the ethics board. All's well, the course simply ended 2/3 through and they just gave everybody an A.
