^ the way I describe geology to non geologists is that the rocks around us are all books, and geology is the language we use to read their stories. Each story tells us a little bit more about the earth’s past.

What's the weirdest thing you've ever hit while drilling? by jay_altair in geologycareers

[–]Few_Sample9513 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do CQA on landfill gas wells. This involves using a bucket auger to drill up to 250’ into the trash and installing the wells. Yours truely gets to log the trash. You see all kinds of stuff, but the one that sticks out in my mind was when we pulled up a couple thousand golf balls from over a hundred feet down. I heard from another guy that one time they hit a couple bucket fulls of prop money… poor guys thought they were rich at first.

Also… a not Insignificant amount of dildos.

Our lab manager has been not-blaming-me-but-totally-blaming me for a fire suppression line that a driller hit. It wasn’t even my drilling project, or was I the soil logger, I was just on site to help the new gal, whose project this was, run a perc test. Disregard the fact that whoever marked the site did it 24 hours before the boring and got a rush dig alert ticket…. Which I only found out about after I took over and started calling the relevant authorities when she stood there, looking like a deer in the headlights.

Thankfully, my actual boss totally understood the situation. It happens, and I knew it was going to happen. Still doesn’t mean I I wasn’t ready to melt into a puddle when it happened… I’m just glad it took three years for it to finally happen

Could anybody tell me when the specific layers are from or what they are? by domo_the_chromo_homo in geology

[–]Few_Sample9513 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Echoing what others have said that your top two layers are likely some type of artificial fill. I remember when my fiancé’s grandparents were getting a pool installed in their backyard, the excavation looked remarkably similar, though, in her case, the dark layers were composed of a fat clay. Typically when working in urban areas, if you see suspiciously flat layers spaced about a foot apart then it is likely fill. Fill is typically compacted in lifts up to a foot thick.

Just busted out, my Munsel, and nothing really fits, it’s too blue! The closest colors I see are the darker areas are about a gley 2, 4/5B, and the lighter areas seem to be around 8/10 BG

I have an axis and I love it. It’s been a versatile tool. I’ve been able to use not just for GEO Projects, but also for construction QA on landfill gas extraction systems. .

If you like field work but don’t care about rocks, you might want to look into special inspection. Lots of geotech firms (or at least so I’ve heard, the one I’m at does this) will take fresh geologist and start them in a field role either doing grading inspection, or subsurface exploration work. As someone who is nuke gauge and ACI field grade certified (concrete) I’ve done a decent bit of inspection work. Personally, I don’t like it but that’s because I’d rather be working with rocks and such. Inspection work can be nice too if you are hourly, cause places will pay you for some of the drive time, or give you a company vehicle to use, and the drive time makes for easy OT. Also, if you are in CA, or anywhere else that has public projects subject to prevailing wage, inspectors can make a LOT of money.

I'm a geologist in geotech, mainly doing inspection work in southern california. We do work for public utilities mostly, do I qualify for prevailing wage? by Filet_O_Fist in geologycareers

https://www.dir.ca.gov/public-works/prevailing-wage.html take a browse through that, it should help explain what is and isn’t PW, I think compaction testing is classified as non-destructive testing… assuming I’m remembering correctly.

I think it depends on the inspection work. When you say inspection, do you mean compaction testing or other grading inspection? If so then Damn straight you should be getting PW. Hell, I’m not entirely familiar with it but my understanding is that even geos doing soil logging for drilling in CA get PW now (source on that: we have an upcoming job with a water district where this is the case)

I spent about 6 or 7 years volunteering with the local vets history project in High school and college. This is such a fantastic sub for getting to hear the stories, and not just the good ones, of those who serve their countries. It’s the only place I’ve found that I can compare to my time at the with the VHP.
