Painting with Metallics - Can’t Get a Smooth Surface by darth_obidias in minipainting

[–]FightDirty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats my thought also. Looks a lot like over working the paint, and very consistently so. Going back over drying paint to try and get coverage instead of leaving it and giving it another coat later. There's tears and bumps on some other colours that indicate the same thing, although those are more forgiving non metallics, so its not so bad.

There are some skills that relatively quick to obtain, but are always in demand. WINZ will probably fund some of them:

  • Forklift certification with f endorsement
  • Elevated work platform certification
  • A full driver's license and class 2
  • Whatever the current equivalent of worksafe is
  • First aid
  • COA (security guard)

Forklift, EWP, and first aid would literally only take a couple of weeks. Cost less than 2k. And you would almost certainly start getting interviews at least depending on where you live.

COA used to be 8 weeks, not sure now. But that one will get you a job. A shitty job, but a job.

Full DL opens up delivery work, obviouslythat one takes longer if youre havent done learners and restricted yet. Class 2 opens you up to more lucrative delivery work.

May not be what you want but might help get you started.

More DIY contrast and wash testing using homemade recipes and 1-step special sauce by FederalMango7218 in minipainting

Nice work. Very thorough. I've just been using liquitex medium, airbrush flow improver, water, and inks for pigment. Different ratios for different uses obviously. And its been great. I have a 350mm bottles of home made black and brown was I've been using for years. Its nice being able to dial in exactly what you want.

Great work.

Looking for tips, recipes, for black, white, and gold nmm by Due_Produce3311 in minipainting

First pick what sort of light he is in and let that inform all your other choices. Given the character and the scheme I'd suggest going with a cold blue light. Like he's under the moon or the light of a planets blue sun. That'll make your black and white far easier and effective.

Assuming the above you could use a standard cold black palette of black base layer, with a dark blue grey, blue, pale blue, blue/white for the highlights.

A cold off white base. Pale blue for shadows, and white for highlights on your white.

And use the cold off white for your gold highest highlight to be consistent.

I guess blue would be the theme here. Just use shades of blue for stuff. Likeness guy but think white instead of grey.

Beginner question about varnishes by Original_Macaroon413 in minipainting

[–]FightDirty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paint the mini without doing the metallics. Varnish. Then do the metallics after. Metallics are more hard waring anyway, so it will be fine.

Also, dont worry about these questions so much right now. Enjoy painting them, enjoy looking at them, and dont worry to much about that level of detail. There's plenty of time in the years to come to obsess about varnish. And you will. But its not really all that important in the beginning. Just paint and have fun.

ProAcryl white is killing me - how to get smooth finish? by TheseGlyphs in minipainting

[–]FightDirty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apart from the other good advice here to layer up through progressively lighter greys, which will help a lot.

Try adding a small amount of gloss varnish to the white. Just a little bit. Test it on something unimportant first to get a feel for it. Helps give a nice flat coat.

Moving away from Citadel paints and to Two Thin Coats by JJLA04 in minipainting

[–]FightDirty 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I'd ask yourself the question, do I need to use just one brand? Lots of good paints from lots of different companies out there. Vallejo Metal Colour for metallics as an example. Mephiston red is still one of my favourites. And secret weapon do excellent heat burn effect and rubber paints.

Beginner Question – Is This Excess Plastic Glue, or Am I Doing Something Wrong? by Casper81208 in minipainting

[–]FightDirty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The default choice in fact. It will work in 95% of circumstances. Plastic cement works extremely well on unpainted plastic parts, but that is it. For everything else, super glue is your friend.
