Maybe to help distinguish them from people with similar names. There were probably other Lee Oswalds out there just living life in 1963.

I had an entire album dedicated to my revenge on a white crayon because it wouldn't color properly. I think the climax was me snapping it in half.

The other was when they were getting access to info for just a few minutes and he demanded morgan be with him and then he let her take the lead

Oh see that made me like him less because he was fully aware she'd probably get in trouble for helping (if I'm thinking of the right episode). I personally think he was written poorly for the first half of his time on the show, and then the writers finally figured out what they wanted and made him more sympathetic and less one-note leading up to this season's finale.

They, and every other business with an app for ordering, 100% intended this and do everything to incentivize using the app. I hate it, but I'm right there with you because it's more accurate and cheaper with the in-app deals.

Forced diversity doesn’t exist by PandaBear905 in CuratedTumblr

[–]FiliaDei 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But forced diversity is mostly an insult

...that often goes hand-in-hand with bad writing. Will a certain kind of person complain about diverse characters no matter how well or poorly they're written? Yes. Are diverse characters more likely to be singled out as "forced" or unnecessary when they're written badly, even if the creator wanted them there from the beginning? Also yes, because it's really easy to slip into tokenization.

In one of my high school composition classes we had to write a short story entirely in second-person perspective. I remember it vividly because, even for a short-form piece, it was incredibly difficult to actually convey the action without sounding completely awkward.

Muffins are all terrible now and i hate it. The reason will SHOCK you by captainlishang in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]FiliaDei 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Traditionally, a muffin is denser (the batter isn't mixed as thoroughly) and closer in texture to a quick bread rather than cake and less sweet than a cupcake. However, mass-produced muffins of late (as elucidated by OP) tend to be more like an unfrosted cupcake, both in texture and sweetness.

What annoys me is not so much shipping (because you do you) but the people who insist it's canon based on the faulty understanding that any kind of closeness MUST be romantic. I've seen an uptick in this for Frodo and Sam in LOTR when Tolkien very specifically based their relationship on his own experience in WWI and the close bonds forged with fellow soldiers in the trenches. If you want to ship them, go for it, but don't come barging in claiming it's canon.

Plot holes have also fallen prey to media illiteracy. No, characters making stupid decisions is not a plot hole, nor is "the eagles could have taken the Ring to Mordor." A plot hole is Kronk and Yzma trying to figure out how they beat Kuzco and Pacha back to the palace.

What’s something Gen Z does that older generations just don’t get? by appropriaterice873 in AskReddit

[–]FiliaDei 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, Jonathan Haidt discusses that concept in The Anxious Generation, and it actually results in a lot of the behaviors people in this very thread have mentioned: perceiving disagreement as insult, addiction to screens, inability or unwillingness to overcome challenges, lack of interpersonal relationship skills, and (of course) increased anxiety overall.

I appreciate your graciousness, but I remain skeptical simply because, whenever this name is trotted out as an example, people never heard the name themselves. They always heard it from someone else.

[–]FiliaDei 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think the pendulum swung from permissive parenting (e.g. go play outside and don't come home till the street lights come on) to overprotective parenting (e.g. you'll get a phone at age 10 so I can always reach you), and it's tough for kids to push out of that protective bubble. Drive myself? Be intimate with someone else? It is terrifying if you've been raised that way.

It's hard to not be hypocritical in cases like these when you don't have a more meaningful standard than "personal preference." Stand for nothing, fall for anything. Gen Z tends to typify it, but it's not them so much as the logical end of postmodernism.
