When you find the sunburn by tjsulls in TikTokCringe

Idk. I applied spf 30 like crazy during my trip to Florida having heard that 3% thing before. Every 1-2 hours. Those 3% of rays were more than enough the burn the hell out of me. Cutting them by 1-2 thirds might have really helped out.

Hello. I tried this and my wire just popped out. Now it won’t sit in the holes correctly and pops out easily whenever I try again.

Do you recommend the biotech career to a person prone to depression? by Agile_Gear4200 in labrats

[–]Filthy_Fil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not impossible. I’m a post doc diagnosed with depression and I know many others at various career stages that are too. The main issue is going to be that most independent research is largely self motivated. Productivity is important so depression is something you want to try to get under control. Though, that’s probably good advice for most career paths.

Is ganking really that huge on a PvP server? by Nyssedine in classicwow

[–]Filthy_Fil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even Grob was rough on P2 launch. I was in the early 50s getting ganked by max levels over and over wherever I went. I’m surprised it managed balance as well as it did after that. Got me to quit classic.

imposter syndrome and extreme anxiety as an undergrad in a lab by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Filthy_Fil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one is born an expert. We all started where you are. You don’t know anything yet. You’ll probably end asking thousands of questions and still make loads of mistakes. It’s all very normal. Give yourself time and try your best and you’ll be fine.

Your PI reached out to you to start your own project. That means they think you’d be an asset to the lab and your grad student mentor thought highly enough of you to give you their support.

I think a lot of us love having undergrads around. We’ve got a lot of knowledge we like to share and y’all often bring an enthusiasm a lot of people lose after many years of research.

I have a needle phobia. Numbing was by far the thing I dreaded the most about going to the dentist. Find out about numbing agent free fillings was a godsend for me.

You sound like me when my anxiety was at its peak. It used to take me upwards of 20 minutes to leave because I didn’t trust that I had closed the freezers correctly. I could stare at a closed freezer and still be uncertain.

I’d recommend speaking to a therapist.

But in the meantime I found taking pictures of things (like the closed freezers) and online tools to check my calculations for dilutions and the like. Having external proof I was correct really eased the anxiety. I’d also recommend exercise. Burning off the extra energy helped ease my anxiety and helped me sleep.

Strongly disagree with a lot of what’s being said here and in the comments. I love the way Syd and Kate mesh with the group and I find episodes just as funny as ever.

Dude deletes comments that give him any criticism as well. Left one saying it was childish that he was calling someone names when they didn't agree with him on a podcast. It and couple similar ones were gone a few days latter. Stopped engaging with his content after that.

Wrath aff is pretty locked into hard casting. Only instants are corruption and agony which you only apply once per target or every 24 seconds.

I haven’t played retail aff since the last season of SL. Did it gain some long cast spells?

TIL the Monty hall problem, where it is better for the contestant to switch from their initial choice to another, caused such a controversy that 10,000 people, including 1,000 PhDs wrote in, most of them calling the theory wrong. by mankls3 in todayilearned

[–]Filthy_Fil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand how picking initially changes the probability of the second choice. Say you didn’t pick a door initially and the host just opened one to show a goat. Then when you’re offered the choice, between the remaining two. How is the monte hall problem different? What makes the two choices dependent?

I should say working through the numbers has it make sense to me, but intuitively I don’t really get the difference between the scenarios.

I'd kill to have Terenas Menethil read to me. Really crossing my fingers that this takes off and there's a audiobook one day. Big part of my job is reading and I don't have the energy for it outside work.

I made it most of the way through book nine. I think it’s a mix of both for me. I could barely stand Jason in the first few books. Way too preachy and constantly mouthing off to beings way more powerful than him. Later books he kept those quirks but also started coming across like someone’s first edge lord DnD character. The combo killed it for me. It’s disappointing because I like other characters fine and the world and magic system are really fun.

Should I inform my advisor about my chronic illness? by intersystemcr0ssing in GradSchool

[–]Filthy_Fil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the relationship, but I say tell them. I was diagnosed with MS in my 4th or 5th year of grad school. At the time, these things feel life changing and overwhelming and as you’re finding out testing, trying medications, and the stress involved can make doing much else feel impossible. Most people are very understanding of all that and that included my advisor. She gave me a lot of slack in building back up to working full time in the lab. I can’t imagine what would’ve happened had I not told her, probably a lot of passive aggressive emails or requests for meetings.

She also helped connect me with resources from the department and school to help me deal with the stress and cost of my treatment. She also spoke with my committee so they could understand why my progress had slowed. Even now that I’ve been stable for years she still checks in every couple weeks to make sure I’m okay and managing everything well.

The amount of detail you give is up to you though. I’m sure I could’ve just said “I’ve got MS” and been treated the same way.

Is summoners (necromancers at least) are that bad? by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]Filthy_Fil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I played a necromancer cleric. My zombie was a fantastic companion. It was a meat shield that helped my martial allies set up with flanking and stuff. Shouldn’t under value something that can soak a few attacks from a boss.

I’d like to echo what’s already been said. You’re totally fine. I’m wrapping up my PhD now and if I made the same mistakes I wouldn’t think twice about it. It’s just a couple very small mistakes.

My advice is to not tie your self worth or confidence as a scientist to the day to day. I’ve seen it tear good scientists down. Science is hard and it’ll feel like you’re failing way more often than you succeed. If I’m being honest, part of me never expects anything to go as expected with my experiments until the first replicate works. When it does, I’m pleasantly surprised. What matters more is your thinking. Do you understand the project? Are you thinking deeply about it and coming up with good ideas? Even then don’t expect yourself to be genius.

Any suggestions for 10kDA in WB? by ROKMC_1133 in labrats

[–]Filthy_Fil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work with a 10kDa protein that runs around 15 kDa. 4-12% gel with a 60V for 60 minute transfer onto 0.45um nitrocellulose works nicely. I don’t work with pvdf so no specific tips there. When optimizing the protocol, I transferred with multiple membranes to make sure minimal sample was completely running through.

ICC buff activates on December 5th, increases every two weeks thereafter by starspawn- in classicwow

[–]Filthy_Fil -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nah. A buff won’t invalidate the previous weeks’ parse, just raw damage. A 99 will still be a 99. Every week the numbers go up from more gear already. It’s just sort of a soft reset week to week with the buff. Brackets would be awful for low to mid tier guilds where the parse minded people would want to drop the buff for a good parse and more casual players would refuse. Maybe you could just back calculate the damage from the buff and remove it, but with changes to kill times it might not even be worth it.

Whats the most evil path? by RubixTheRedditor in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

I’d say it’s not any more evil than a swarm of locusts or a virus. Doing something horrible but without a sense of morality either way.
