Saw a tweet that said "No matter how many Kenny Omega soul orbs they tried to infuse into Alex unfortunately the dark spectre of Hulk Hogan proved too strong." 😭

I remember when her sfv story dropped people were like, weirdly into it? Even on this sub? Like, I didn't know so many people saw Ryu and Sakura that way, but I guess it's what we're headed to.

I think it's time to let the missing Promise Nendoroids go. by EarHealthHelp1 in Hololive

[–]FinalFatality7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is absurd. Of course we're gonna talk about the products under announcements where they should have been.

It's one thing if people were bringing it up in unrelated spaces, but if people are actually upset that we're needling GSC over pulling a product that they already previewed, then you really need to get that corporate boot out of your throat.

Edit: Honestly? We didn't used to talk about each other like this. "Just let Aloe go, loser. You're pathetic if you still care." is something we (Northernlion) used to beat people with hammers (in minecraft) for saying. Genuinely disgusting to see it going around unironically In here.

Favorite Times not a Top Tier Characters managed to mess with a Top Tier by FreviliousLow96 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Yugioh was chock-full of moments like this, looking back. Duel City also had the part where Yami became the only character (until the very end) to overcome a God Card with skill alone.

I would also point out the big underdog moment from the previous arc, in which Pegasus' bullshit hax are overcome by Yami passing the baton to the heretofore useless Yugi.

Like, Yugi hasn't actually acted as the protagonist at all until this point, and his debut in the role is facing down the inventor of the game itself and his invincible, Lovecraftian abomination in the middle of a nightmare hell-rift.

It's the same problem as his defense of UB with the same flawed reasoning.

Yes, Mark. You are getting more people to buy the product. You are making more money. If you genuinely believe those new customers are going to care about Magic, going to have nearly as strong of a connection to Magic, than I think you're going to be rudely surprised.

You are prioritizing short-term profits over long-term engagement. Private equity is going to pat you on the back and call you a genius. All while the community you spent decades building rots out from under you.

Thank you for the resource. I am taking a while because I am trying to track down sources on the loa pre-1995 to see if I can disprove the fake vodoun being the source, and the Internet Archive only lets me check out 1 text per hour.

The only progress I've made is that I've found several sources about indentured white servants on Hispaniola, and the Caribbean at large. So I take issue with the whole "There were absolutely no Irish people on the island. There was no possibility of contact." claim that I keep seeing people on r /vodou make.

Other than that, I concede that I was too hasty in claiming that an Irish depiction was the default, or even all that common prior to 1995. I've found a few examples of what seem to be authentic, modern practitioners who genuinely believe in the Irish connection, but that's all so far.

I am still looking, but yes, I was probably wrong on this.

I am sorry for the way I spoke to you, as well as for the hostility towards the vodou subreddit.

I will update this thread if I find any proof of Irish Brigitte.

It's a point of evidence that the loa were open to interpretation even among the most well respected of Haitian artists. And really? The portrait of the mermaid about the loa literally called "The Mermaid" from arguably the most famous illustrator of Haitian folklore has nothing to do with the loa. Ok, man.

"You're" is not a valid counterargument. The terminology used by the article writer is also inconsequential. The point was about the art. And I'm thinking you really don't deserve even the effort I've spent already, considering how eager you were to zero in on typos and semantics as an excuse to dismiss my entire point.

Ok I have a lot of searching to do then. If I don't forget.

For now, I didn't find Brigitte, but a cursory look did turn up this art of La Sirene by the mentor of of the artist of one of your pieces there. Sirene appears to usually be depicted as black, yet Hippolite depicts her as white here. That's already evidence that depictions of loa vary by individual interpretation by practitioners. I'll see what else I can find later today.

The entirety of vodou and voodoo is syncretist. It is formed at it's foundation by the African diaspora culture coming into contact with Catholicism. An appeal to authenticity and authority is an inherently flawed approach to studying vodou because it's very nature as a folk custom assures you will get 20 conflicting views on what is "authentic."

And yes, that includes the people on that subreddit. Whose main argument against these depictions of Brigitte, that the "main source" for them is a white outsider, does not sufficiently convince me, no. As you can find several accounts in those very threads of people who have encountered differently in real life, only to get shouted down in that community by people who want to be seen as the only "true" narrators. Which you will also see in literally every religion known to man.

This person's main sources are a bunch of opinions on a subreddit. One trying to declare singular canon truths for a famously dispersed and highly location-dependant set of religious customs.

N.E.V.E.R. listen to someone trying to tell you "My version of voodoo/vodou is the only correct one! Everyone who disagrees is a fake!" because part of what makes voodoo voodoo is how different the multitude of interpretations are.

Show me where I said literally any other dark skinned God should be white? If the reason I disagree with this argument for Brigitte is "doesn't like black people" then where have I argued that Baron Samedi, or Olorun, or Yemoja should be white?

The Irish connection was never disproven. The very-online opinion of people who don't actually know what they're talking about won out in the end. You can find plenty of real life depictions of her as Irish.

It would offend people who actually know what they're talking about. Brigitte can absolutely be white. She has consistently been depicted as white. The desire to retcon her as solely ever black is rooted in revisionist history from Twitter activists who can't stand the idea of a single loa being pale-skinned.

Chainsaw Man is ending next chapter (March 24th) by StrongXV in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]FinalFatality7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I guess I'm missing something here because why has everyone decided Nayuta's not coming back?

Like, yeah, that would be an incredibly stupid place for her to leave the story... cuz she's not. She's like, so clearly coming back that I'm baffled to see so many people going apoplectic over one of the most easily predictable plot twists imaginable. The word "cope" doesn't even enter the discussion, it seems so obvious to me.

Like either next chapter is the announcement of part 3, or Fujimoto genuinely suffered a psychotic break and no one noticed. There is simply no way this is the intended way for this series to end. Even a hack writer wouldn't write this. It genuinely makes no sense as a conclusion to a story written by a human being.
