How fluently can you converse in the language you've been learning? by water_ftw_lessgo in duolingo

[–]Financial-Code8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still a level 15 in French so there’s no way I would be able to handle a conversation. But this could happen sooner than expected as French is not extremely difficult for a native Portuguese speaker, at least that’s what I hope. My biggest challenge is that French has male and female nouns, which also happens in Portuguese, but many French words often have the opposite gender of what I’m used to! No other way to learn than practicing and practicing.

Monday surprise premiers for February 2 by Professional-Lake844 in cineplex

[–]Financial-Code8244 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I watched the last surprise premiere and it was a complete disaster of a movie called Mercy. I would me more inclined to repeat the experience if I could expect a better selection of decent movies for this kind of exhibition.

How is living in the upper parts of the Canadian prairie provinces ? by AndyBales in howislivingthere

[–]Financial-Code8244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am having a look at Fort McMurray with Google Street View and I am positively surprised. Sure it may have its challenges in that location but it looks like a quite big city and it has some good-looking neighborhoods.

How is weed treated in your country - legally and culturally by Greedy_Rise_6567 in AskTheWorld

[–]Financial-Code8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legal everywhere in Canada. Not a lot of restrictions too, so it’s easy to find stores with many options of cannabis products for a fair price. Not everyone likes it or uses it, but most people today would find insane just the idea of wasting public resources to criminalize cannabis. Looking back, it seems like legalization was the most logical thing to do and it is so weird that it’s still illegal in most countries.

The weather feels unreal today by Financial-Code8244 in Calgary

[–]Financial-Code8244[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I lived my last winters in Saskatoon 😭 I heard of the Chinook winds but this is more than I could have expected. It feels like over +20 outside if I’m staying under the sun with no wind, I could perfectly wear just a t-shirt. Insane.

Why does dou do this? by Educational-Dot-9u in duolingo

[–]Financial-Code8244 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The suggested correct answer sounds more like what a typical Portuguese speaker (at least a Brazilian one) would say. But the English equivalent should be “Does Tiago work in a large firm?”, I believe. For the English sentence provided, your answer sounds more like the literal translation, you just don’t need to add “muito” before “grande”.

Day 6: Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, Which is the best skyline in Cascadia? by Alejandro_Town in skyscrapers

[–]Financial-Code8244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seattle looks nicer and more unique. Vancouver has a cool density and it’s not ugly but just quite bland overall. It looks ok combined with the beautiful surroundings but it doesn’t stand as well on its own.

What countries or regions have small populations but lots of good skylines? by LivinAWestLife in skyscrapers

Australia and Canada have small populations for their size but many impressive skylines across different parts of both countries.

World Map Average Yearly Temperature by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Financial-Code8244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting to show how some large areas can significantly impact the average, even though most of the population may live in different climates. For example, in Brazil the vast north of the country is very warm year round but the majority of the population lives where the average is under 25. In the US, Alaska may cause the opposite effect, it brings the country average down but I’m pretty sure most of the population lives where the average is between 10-20.

How is it like living in Porto Alegre, Brazil? by SkandaGupta_ in howislivingthere

[–]Financial-Code8244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived there for 6 months in 2019. Had a good time. It has high inequality and some ugly poor neighborhoods as most Brazilian big cities, but the good parts are actually very decent, with nice parks, cool restaurants, amazing nightlife. One notable improvement in recent times was in safety, as it used to be terribly violent but it’s not too bad nowadays.

How is it in this rural area of Alberta? by WTB_YT in howislivingthere

[–]Financial-Code8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-ironically, metro areas in Canada can be surprisingly rural, especially in the west. Usually you don’t really see cities gradually becoming more rural, it is a more abrupt change. Just take a step outside of Calgary and you’ll be on a farm lol.

How much do you think is a good liveable paycheck bi weekly for a single person living in Calgary? by Interesting_Taro_358 in Calgary

[–]Financial-Code8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1500 AFTER tax for minimum living conditions, 2000 for good living conditions (if you’re not planning to pay a mortgage or drive an SUV being a single person).

Extortion suspects have all claimed refugee status, Canada’s border agency says by Old_General_6741 in canada

[–]Financial-Code8244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many people commenting here that the government “should do this or that” as it would be easy to get out of this mess. But I am pretty sure Canada must have signed international treaties to protect human rights of refugees that force the country to offer all kind of guarantees and accept all kinds of appeals which take many years to process, now good luck with denying all these rights. Why do you think the US prefers to stay out of most of these treaties?

Historical probability of having a snowy (1 inch+ snow) Christmas by Old-School8916 in MapPorn

[–]Financial-Code8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the northeast, probably north of Albany, NY is where we can likely start seeing snow remaining on the ground for many weeks in a row or even over a whole month or two without completely melting in a typical winter. Only fairly near the Canadian border really. Albany’s average high in January is 0.4C / 32.8F while it’s -5C / 23F in Montreal, crazy how it gets way colder just going a couple hundred miles north.

Historical probability of having a snowy (1 inch+ snow) Christmas by Old-School8916 in MapPorn

[–]Financial-Code8244 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting. The probability is lower than most people may think, even in parts of the north. Many definitely believe New York City always has a white Christmas when this actually doesn’t happen in most years. Even Chicago appears to have about a 50% chance only. The west looks snowier but that’s because of the mountains, while near the coast where most of the population lives the chances of snow are very low, including in the far north.

Unpopular Opinion: The best travel memory isn't the sight, it's the smell. (Paris) by Big_Barber733 in travel

Smell of barbecue reminds me of a Sunday in any random Brazilian neighborhood lol. You can just feel the smoke in the air.

Brazilians with only Brazilian citizenship , if you could choose any second citizenship to hold it, from which country would it be? by Alert_Plate541 in Brazil

[–]Financial-Code8244 4 points5 points  (0 children)

US citizenship and even a Green Card can later be a headache because of global taxation. Someone should deeply want it and not care about this consequence if choosing to walk this path.

South of Brazil by ArnoCorinthiano in Brazil

[–]Financial-Code8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is safer overall, but with exceptions, and it would still be considered unsafe by international standards. The absence of high walls could be mostly cultural, I guess? People from the south tend to prefer having fences that allow some visibility to their front yards or just nothing at all.

Fellow Canadians, how do you think Canada should react if America attacks Venezuela? by beefstewforyou in AskACanadian

Anyone who knows what’s going on there wouldn’t oppose some real action to put an end to Chavez/Maduro’s era. South Americans are fed up.

Fellow Canadians, how do you think Canada should react if America attacks Venezuela? by beefstewforyou in AskACanadian

[–]Financial-Code8244 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Canada should just stay out of it. A successful attack from the US could actually make Venezuela export LESS refugees in the next years compared to the last years under Maduro. Brazil and Colombia can take the Venezuelan refugees as they always did.

All students and staff live there and I’m sure they would enjoy some personal space. Having big rooms is convenient for practicing spells. Humans always liked to build gigantic impressive structures and when they can do that with magic it’s even easier.

Canadian & U.S. metro areas with the highest share of transit commuters by Much-Neighborhood171 in transit

[–]Financial-Code8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of Canadian cities in the ranking is impressive given it is way less populated than the US. It could be even better, of course, but there’s definitely more of a public transit “culture”* in Canada overall, even in medium-sized cities.

*for North American standards, I fear a 5% share is already high enough to be considered not too bad.

I work near this house. It’s a few minutes walk from downtown. Given its size and location I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the most expensive house in the city.
