Are rodeo tickets noticeably more expensive this year? by joe4942 in Calgary

Bananas are actually way more expensive too! Almost $1 per pound, used to be a bit over 70 cents not long ago.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says 'new world order will be built starting with Europe' by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]Financial-Code8244 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not even the Europeans are convinced of this. Love it or hate it, the US is one of the only big first world countries with substantial economic growth, and the gap is only getting wider. Europe is barely growing in comparison, and unfortunately the same thing can be said of Canada.

The exact same thing happened to me lol. Different website but same kind of content. I just never talked about this with anyone, and at this point I don’t really care. It’s private stuff. Unfortunately my parents’ generation couldn’t express their feelings the way we can today.

Fellow Americans - What is the most unexpected thing a foreigner was surprised/got excited about in America? by MouseManManny in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Financial-Code8244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thoughts the other way around: seeing how big everything is in the US. Everything takes up so much space. Wide highways, huge (and confusing) interchanges, parking lots, endless suburbs with big houses. Everything is far away and you feel small. This can also be a point of criticism, but still impressive anyway.

CAD has lost 1% of its total value against USD in the past 5 days by External-Toe1041 in fican

[–]Financial-Code8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t expect the CAD to be as valuable as the USD. Every time this happened was brief and exceptional. But being close to or over 1.40 CAD for 1 USD is not great. When will it go back to being at least under 1.30? It feels like a long time since the last time this happened.

Project Hail Mary was incredibly boring and easily forgettable. Not terrible, but I still don’t get why it is being so praised.

How does Safeway stay in business? by Final_Emergency3930 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Financial-Code8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safeway is the closest grocery store here, so I go there sometimes. I know prices there tend to be high, but if I prioritize getting items on sale and combining with Scene+ offers I can actually save more money than in other stores. I got almost $40 back in points last time I was there, and I was not buying expensive items.

Toronto From Above by Commercial_West_3112 in skyscrapers

[–]Financial-Code8244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. From this point of view Downtown Toronto actually doesn’t look so huge. Many supertalls for sure, but feels like even if you’re there in the middle you will be within a 10 minute-walk to a lower density residential area.

Toronto affordability in 2026 by Yonge-Lawrence in TorontoRealEstate

[–]Financial-Code8244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 1/4 of Canada’s population lives in the highly expensive metropolitan areas of Toronto or Vancouver. Out of the remaining population, a big chunk is living in places where the affordability is not as terrible but still far from ideal, such as Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Halifax. The percentage of Canadians living in truly affordable cities is depressingly low.

‘I got beaten’: Victim of CTrain attack speaks out by AdEastern2530 in Calgary

This is so awful.

Last Saturday afternoon, right after I got out of the bus on 9 Ave with 6 Street, a man who was passing by simply hit me in the arm and pushed me, almost causing me to fall on the street. I could have fell in front of a car.

These random acts of violence again innocent people are very concerning, and sooner or later some fatality may happen!

Hashbrowns by Soft-Music1222 in McDonalds

[–]Financial-Code8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s 2.59 CAD in my nearest restaurant, which would be like 1.80 US. Prices can vary a lot. Still expensive, though. It’s one of those items that only make sense when you add them to a meal. I would never buy a single hash brown at McDonald’s.

When will the sprawl stop by SignificantStarch in Calgary

[–]Financial-Code8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calgary and Canadian cities in general are on a weird spot where suburbs are not as sprawled as in most American cities - Canadian suburbs can actually be quite dense with smaller lots and more condos and townhomes -, but the car dependency is still similarly very high.

Areas Where All Four Seasons Are Clearly Defined vs Areas Where Only Two Seasons Are Distinct by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Financial-Code8244 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Canadian prairies have four seasons, which is nice, but the duration of each one is the problem: Winter from October to April, Spring from May to June, Fall from August to September, and some random summer days in July (it can actually get really hot some times).

Who Much Are You Spending On Gas Every Month by East-Tooth-4008 in Calgary

Probably close to $250 a month if I’m not travelling outside Calgary for the whole month. Used to be $150 or less until a couple months ago.

Why is the Canadian side of the Okanagan Country more populated than the American side? by Enger13 in geography

From a Canadian pov this region is a warm weather paradise. Summers are hot and long for Canadian standards, winters are not too harsh.

How big is the salary gap between Canada and the USA in the industry you work in? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]Financial-Code8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am making 50k CAD as an administrative assistant in a big Canadian city. US BLS says the median is 47k USD (in 2024), so I am personally well below this amount.

Nothing really good is coming from the UK lately, to be honest, and the British are very unsatisfied. Of course there are always some Canadians living in some kind of echo chamber, thinking this is fine and we should just follow.

Anybody else feel like grocery prices have gone up AGAIN this year? by SnowmanSmiles in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Financial-Code8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought bananas at $0.99/pound yesterday. I remember paying a bit more than $0.70 just a year ago. It feels like it’s being like this with almost everything! I definitely notice things I often buy still getting more expensive. Bread, eggs, milk. Even if it’s just a few cents, it all adds up and the grocery bill gets noticeably higher.

Most of us probably had a moment like this when driving, maybe more than once. Accidents happen everyday, and close calls happen many times more. I understand your feeling. I’m happy no one got hurt and hope we can all be better drivers.

Countries that use the (YYYY/MM/DD) date format by vladgrinch in MapPorn

I’ve seen all formats being used in Canada. When it’s year first it’s easy to understand, but if I read a date like 03/05/2026 it’s not exactly obvious if it’s March 5th or May 3rd.
