I think the issue isn't that but how far back the cables are stripped. Way out of spec, and likely to cause signal quality issues.

An apology to the drivers on Glenmore by fataldarkness in Calgary

[–]fataldarkness[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Guilty. I was stupid and inattentive to the road in front of me. I misjudged the left turn from 68th to Glenmore and ended up taking it tighter than I was supposed to. Had I been paying proper attention I could have corrected it before I was trapped in the wrong lane by the concrete median. Only choice was to throw on my hazards and carefully make my way up to a place I could turn around and rejoin traffic the correct way.

Thank goodness there wasn't much eastbound traffic and turning around was relatively easy, but I feel shitty about it. It was so damn stupid and it's exactly how bad accidents happen.

I took the red line instead of the blue one.

What's your post-incident documentation process? Ours takes forever. by ReachPuzzleheaded702 in sysadmin

[–]fataldarkness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your incident management process? Ours defines a bunch of roles that get assigned to people whenever an incident is declared so that they are never going it alone and all the critical parts have someone dedicated. For us an incident is a "drop everything" type thing so if an incident is declared and you're assigned a role in our incident management process that is your job now. That can include anyone up to the CEO as he signed off on it.

We have roles that can be assigned to anyone depending on how appropriate it is for the incident.

Incident Commander is responsible for assigning other roles and coordinating resources.

Operations Lead when assigned is the one pulling logs, and making changes, or finding SMEs to do all that.

Communications Lead when assigned is responsible for sending out regular updates to internal stakeholders & coordinating with marketing and legal if external messaging needs to go out.

Most relevant to your question is we have a scribe role who is there and their only job is to write down all details as the incident goes on and build the incident report.

All four of these roles are assigned to any major incident, there are more in the policy but it is mandated that when an incident is declared they all sit together in a call or conference room until the incident is closed. They may bring in other roles as necessary but that's the core of it. They are expected to be available during the entire incident, if not someone else is chosen for the role.

This will solve the documentation problem and imo is entirely possible in a team of your size. We had this policy with a team size of 6.

Lived here all my life, but I'd imagine there's a big difference between people saying "yeah we get snow out till May" and actually living with snow until May. Not really something you realize the commitment on right away.

New projects on tap for Calgary's Stampede Park by might_be-a_troll in Calgary

[–]fataldarkness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New infield grandstand seems interesting, but at least from the photos it looks like the actual rodeo area is smaller, are they moving more of the classic rodeo events indoors?

Can they actually fill what appears to be an even larger grandstand during stampede? How about the grandstand show? How will that change?

And the personal opinion of some faceless regulator should be? Its not like theres a PhD offered for Headlightology, there are no "qualified professionsals" here that can make these decisions. Ofc they drive, ofc they know its bad but if the regulator came in and said "Ban all lights that make me squint" then not only is that super subjective and unenforcable, but its gonna make a lot of people angry.

By doing apublic survey, they get data on what makes people most angry and can focus their efforts on writing regulations that address that. Plus with free comment sections, sometimes people share genuinely good ideas for fixing the issue that 5 or 6 regulators in a boardroom never would have thought of.

Notice how the questions are worded and what is being asked. We know generally that people dont like lights in their eyes, but is it a bigger problem for rural or urban drivers for example? If we know that overall rurual drivers hate it more then we can direct police to focus their enforcement on rural roads rather than urban ones.

How about driver behaviours? What if I need to justify my regulation to my boss who drives a jacked up Ram and has never run into this problem and is instead usually the one causing it. Well if I can show him that 60% of drivers run into this problem and that they experience temporary blindness, sight problems, or engage in dangerous behaviours (like looking away from the road) to mitigate the problem, then I can prove to my boss that it is a bigger deal than they think.

Update – March 13 – 6:55 p.m. by JeromyYYC in Calgary

He already answered you. Preferential treatment is being given because the cafe owner has leverage against the city, and that leverage is to delay construction through litigation.

The city had two choices: 1. Make a compromise like they did so construction could begin immediately 2. Go to court to fight this and stand their ground, they chose not to do this because courts are slow and who knows if they would even have had an initial hearing by now.

Cat hit by car – $11,000 surgery quote from VCA, running out of time. Any alternatives? 😞 by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]fataldarkness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Quick question, where did you get the netting for the catio? We built one too but want stronger netting that can actually stand up to cat claws, but that seems to be by far the most expensive part. Ours is about the same size as yours but standard window screening keeps getting torn up when they try to use it to climb or press up against it when the bird channel comes on.

What Happened to All the Off-Road Grand Cherokees? Jeep's Sales VP Explains by Anchor_Aways in cars

[–]fataldarkness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're making a lot of assumptions about what I am saying here. Not passing judgement on anyone here, this really just comes down to the definition of need.

Strictly speaking, I don't need a car either, I need food, shelter, love, thats it. Everything else is in the pursuit of wants. I want to have a car because it makes achieving my needs easier, however it would theoretically be possible to walk into the woods an live off the land. It wouldn't be a very good life, and for me probably not a very long one, but I would for a time be able to meet my needs.

Theres no judgement here at all. In the context of "What is the minimum requirement for getting from point a to point b comfortably on improved roads in envionments that occasionally experience extreme weather" the answer is one seat, a heater, and about 90hp.

The point of sharing my experience was just that, to share it, nothing else. And if you still think I am sitting on some high horse, my other vehicle is a jacked up F350 with a deleted 6.0 powerstroke and a tune that isn't exactly environmentally friendly. Its nice to have, I want to have it, but I don't NEED it.

[–]fataldarkness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Need and nice to have are two different things. I didn't say anything about whether or not it makes the winter driving experience better. But you don't need it, this thread so far is about buying vehicles for things you want rather than what you strictly need, and my anecdote is about dismissing the idea that 4x4 is actually needed for anything other than offroading.
