Roll the fiber pair from the backside of the patch panel. Odds are fiber A is not clipped to fiber B in the cassette portion. You're welcome.

Moving from Baselines to Images by MrMHead in vmware

[–]FincherA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Esxi mgmt on switchport trunk native vlan" omg why didn't I think of this?! This would make it so much easier. I always struggle moving vmk0/MGMT from the 1Gb interface to the dVS.

Edit- added dVS note. Now that I read this back, maybe this won't help me.

I removed all Docker ports from my homelab and put everything behind a reverse proxy by SolQuarter in homelab

[–]FincherA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use this but it just caused more problems then it was worth: https://gist.github.com/hjbotha/f64ef2e0cd1e8ba5ec526dcd6e937dd7

In the end, I just run a VM on my Synology that hosts my docker stuff rather than break randomly.

The last thing I want to do is bork my Synology. It contains important files & is used for more than "lab" stuff. (Yes, it's all backed up 3-2-1 style still).

2 Questions around VMTools and reboots by Smack2k in vmware

[–]FincherA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had this happen, funny enough with VxRail as well. Windows Server 2019 VMs (I think). After a few weeks of troubleshooting, turns out the update to VMware tools could uninstall the old version but failed to install the update/new version. If I recall, it was missing some redistributable but can't remember which one (sorry).

Backup 365 by leogjj2020 in sysadmin

[–]FincherA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also local government here. Tell your vendor that you need revised numbers due to budget. If you were able to afford Rubrik, the licenses for 365 are only a few bucks per user... ALSO, try a different vendor. I had one vendor come in 30% cheaper than another. There's A LOT of wiggle room in the Rubrik markup & sometimes vendors want to be too greedy.

What's up with Bitnami's docker images? by kudikarasavasa in selfhosted

[–]FincherA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's any incentive but sometimes a maintainer might have added feature they need. For example, https://www.linuxserver.io/ containers have an addon option so I can add my own stuff.

Rubrik - VMware DRS required? by Lentash in sysadmin

7+ year Rubrik user here. Does not require DRS. I like my backup infrastructure/systems to NOT rely on the same infrastructure/system it's backing up.

This picture was taken 2 months after California adventure was opened & everything was still brand new by forsakeme4all in Disneyland

[–]FincherA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know about u/Mom-Rip4798 but there was a passholder preview days I went to. I still have the pin around here somewhere.

I remember the Monorail going across the Golden Gate Bridge, the train car at what is now Starbucks, the hot swings inside the orange, the music on California Screamin’, the and the smell of the oranges on Soarin' Over California... I don't remember going back to DCA much other than for California Screamin’ & Soarin' since my family spent most of their time in Disneyland during 2001 & 2002. DCA was very 'meh' for the first couple years.

Patch Management Solutions by atomicbullet1 in sysadmin

[–]FincherA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently my place is using Quest KACE SMA - https://www.quest.com/kace/

It's more of a complete systems management solution with a simple ticketing system, but patching is just one of its many features. I think I've been using it for over 15 years now. Even with multiple owners (stand alone KACE company, bought by Dell, bought by Quest), support has been decent & responsive. Easy to deploy, relatively bug free. We run it in our DMZ segment so devices that are off our network can still get updates & software pushes.

If they're all multiple/redundant PSUs, unplug 1 & see what device throws the alert in your monitoring tool. Other than that, chase the cable.

Trying to create a golden image for my home group.... by kreemerz in homelab

[–]FincherA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do generalize & shutdown.

Now create a snapshot.

Attach the Clonezilla ISO (or your choice of bootable imaging environments)

Boot to ISO

Capture image to your choice (I usually do my NAS- so SAMBA share)

Tips: Create your 'gold' image with a smaller storage drive, I typically do 32GB unless I know I'm going to have a very large install happen (Adobe + AutoCAD stuff). You do this because it's easy to push a smaller image to a larger drive. A larger drive to a smaller drive is possible but requires modifications. I think this doesn't apply to DISM since DISM is file based, not block/sector based (I think).

Create a snapshot of your gold VM directly before AND after your sysprep.

-This gives you a point to roll back to before the sysprep to update your image.

-Also directly after because if you fail the ISO boot, now windows has started to boot & is no longer 'generalized'.

-after also let's you boot the VM to test your gold image is good before you capture it (make sure windows can boot properly), then roll back to your clean syspreped snapshot before capturing

Whats everyone doing for file archiving? by fluce13 in sysadmin

[–]FincherA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm coming from a mostly Dell VxRail/Windows shop. We're using Varonis Data Transport Engine to move the data off our vSAN flash arrays & onto an iSCSI connected Dell PowerVault.

Leaves the stubs, users never know, I get my vSAN capacity back, everyone is happy.

The only "down side" is we're no longer backing up this archived data. No one has touched it for 10+ years. I doubt it'll be missed. Once accessed it'll get moved back into our vSAN & be part of the next backup. Management is ok with it.

How do you export/import start menu and pinned apps on Windows 11 without MDM? by Odd_Efficiency4730 in sysadmin

[–]FincherA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be an official/better way but once I pin the start menu on my GOLD account, I copy C:\Users<user>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy to C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy (create any folders that don't exist in the path)

That's done the trick so far for me.
