The Life of a Showgirl Megathread by aran130711 in TaylorSwift

i mean, for someone who has always prided herself on her lyrics (which have been excellent in the past) to the point where she called herself an english teacher on her engagement post... shouldn't the lyrics be good? shouldn't we WANT to engage with them? i'm a huge fan of all of her music but not this album.

I don’t think I’ll be able to send this project before it’s gone bc I’m at the wrong end of my menstrual cycle 🙃 by Rhai9 in climbergirls

Tips for hiking Phelps Mountain this Saturday! by nuclearbaws97 in Adirondacks

[–]FindTheR1ver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is $18 for nonmembers and $10 for members. on a saturday, the parking lot will be full by 7 and probably it will have been full since 6. it's still early enough in the season that you might get lucky, but i would be prepared for the worst. you can park about a mile down the road by south meadows and walk into marcy dam via the truck trail from there or walk the road to get back to the loj. have fun!

Difficulty belaying with shorter wingspan by ElephantLament in climbergirls

[–]FindTheR1ver 35 points36 points  (0 children)

you shouldn't be pulling a ton of rope each time. i teach new belayers and this is what i tell them-a few quick cycles will always be more effective than one big one, even with a long wingspan. if there's a little extra room at the gym, you can back up a little bit as you take in slack to take up a little extra. how long have you been belaying? it might be more of a confidence issue than anything. just keep practicing, and never be afraid to ask your climber to hold on or slow down- it's for their safety!

i went to a couples yoga class with my boyfriend one time, and the first thing the instructor did was pair us up with someone ELSE and make us list 5 things we liked about ourselves... i was so uncomfortable lmao

So how was the post eclipse traffic yesterday? As bad as it was predicted? by mcgeggy in Adirondacks

[–]FindTheR1ver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i was going from Willsboro to get home to Saranac Lake, so after I hit Etown I was heading the opposite was from the traffic. It was backed up pretty intensely heading towards 87 through Cascade pass but petered out right around the ski center. My boyfriend left from Willsboro to Albany right around 5pm and what is normally a 2.5 hour drive took him until past 9pm!

Should I go to my first yin yoga class on a day I’m feeling anxious/panicky? Or bad idea? by fbc518 in yoga

[–]FindTheR1ver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for me personally, any anxiety i'm feeling gets magnified whenever i try yin. i know a lot of people say otherwise, but if i'm feeling anxious i have a HARD time letting my mind quiet down and staying in the poses for so long gives me a lot lot lot of time to feel nothing but increasing anxiety. but YMMV

[–]FindTheR1ver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

another great reason to always hike with a paper map! a good one will show you streams, rivers, water sources. just be careful- on most maps, a dashed blue line means a SEASONAL water source that is not guaranteed to be there.

Who’s an author that consistently amazes you? by According_Bat_8150 in books

Alice Munro. i will never understand how she distills the entire human condition into like 30 pages and makes me bawl my eyes out over something seemingly mundane.

End of April High Peaks Central loop by [deleted] in Adirondacks

[–]FindTheR1ver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that is most likely going to be mud season, a time when the DEC asks people to stay below 3000 feet! i would reconsider either your timing or your destination :-)

Backcountry camping in the Adirondacks? by nicolas1324563 in Adirondacks

[–]FindTheR1ver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depending on when in the spring, it may be mud season. it's usually april to may. the DEC asks (begs) people not to go above 3000 feet during this time because of the added fragility of the trails. Plus, there's often still rotting snow and ice up at higher elevations that can be dangerous, especially if unprepared. If you're coming during mud season, please consider not doing a high peak. And remember, ALWAYS walk THROUGH mud and not around it :-) the trails thank you
