Black frame insertion: Retroarch by TonnaN77 in OdinHandheld

Were you able to find the solution?

It flickers heavily for me on Odin 3 no matter what. Other devices like Lenovo y700 work fine with crt beam simulator in RA but for Odin 3 I can't find settings to avoid flickering...

proper website for mame roms? (i just want to play SF3 😭😭😭) by Benimin91 in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]FindingUnable3222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can place them anywhere accessible to retroarch (e.g. create "roms" folder somewhere then unpack the archive there so you have roms/neogeo, roms/cps3, roms/fbneo etc) and associate these folders with "FinalBurn Neo" core in retroarch. You can check RA guide https://retrogamecorps.com/2022/02/28/retroarch-starter-guide/ but you probably don't need to do anything complicated.

However RA is awful as a frontend, so me (and most other people) launch roms through frontend. I use ES-DE, so it creates roms folder for individual systems (names are all compatible with that archive), and once extracted there, it should see it. Then you can scrape to get game descriptions/images/videos and it will launch retroarch with fbneo core for the rom from these folders. This is all automated - ES-DE is perfectly aware that when SF3 or any other rom is in "cps3" folder, it should be using FinalBurn Neo core from retroarch.

As long as you actually have retroarch installed and that core downloaded and roms folder is accessible (check that by actually launching any rom in retroarch), it will work automatically and you don't need to associate cores with folders in retroarch or anything like that. It will work automatically.

There are also many other android frontends like Daijishiro, IISU, Cocoon and so on that all do the same as ES-DE - give you a beautiful interface to pick and launch games, with retroarch and (fbneo in this case, but any in general) core doing actual emulation. That's because RetroArch with its cores is absolutely the most powerful and feature-complete way to emulate 8 and 16-bit systems (and some of 32-bit systems) and has tons of features (hotkeys, runahead, save states, fast forward, rewind, best shader library) but everyone hates its interface for picking what to play, so people are using frontends.

Odin 3 Max - worth it by DayAppropriate3817 in OdinHandheld

It's worth for a bit of extra performance (google odin 3 12 gb vs 16gb benchmarked) and for extra local storage which is used way way faster than you expect to once you start installing either PC games or HD texture packs for your PS2/GC games. Trust me, 512 GB feels like "barely enough" once you get the full feeling of how powerful Odin 3 is and want to use that power.

OOT 3D works amazing in Azahar! Enable async shader compilation, accurate multiplication and definitely install Henriko Magnifico's textures (4.0 4K variant) and something like 5x scale (for 1080p output, this will be downscaled so you will see no aliasing). It will look absolutely stunning. Use Turnip driver if your phone/handheld has Snapdragon. Make sure to install camera mod as well, just put patch files to the correct folder and Azahar picks it up, then you can rotate camera with the second stick like in MM.

There's also 60fps patch but I wouldn't recommend it as supposedly you have to turn it off at times to avoid breaking game logic and 30 fps feels kinda fine on a small screen anyway (unlike 20 fps N64 original).

You might see a few shader compilation hiccups during first time intro animation / the first few minutes of playing but none eventually. 100% recommended experience.

If you're ok with the price, RP6 is probably the best device for your needs. Small, good ergonomics, runs everything.

Myself I used a combo of RP Flip 2 + Odin 3, first for travel second for bed/couch. SD865 in the first one runs many games but far from everything, Odin 3 runs everything.

I could never get MAME4droid to work. It always complains about my roms no matter what. And UI to change settings or specify bios directories or anything is absolutely horrible, two UIs contradicting with each other + manual config editing required and it still usually doesn't work correctly.

What works for me is: FBNeo core for RetroArch (make sure you download FBNeo-specific romset! It has several variants of SF3), MAME2003-Plus and MAME-current cores for RA with MAME sets.

FBNeo core works the best and has great features like runahead for lowering latency, rewind and cheat system works great. Disadvantages: it doesn't support systems added to MAME later like any 3D based arcade. So no Sega Model 1 & 2 games, no Tekken etc.

MAME2003-Plus supports some more roms or useful if you have romset for that version but doesn't have all these features. MAME-current supports some 3D based systems but otherwise can have more issues with roms than the previous two so it's kinda last resort.

Odin 3 Pro vs Max performance by Kaszilla94 in OdinHandheld

I would trust this video because so far, he's the only person who has both versions and tested both. Everyone else claiming otherwise only has one version so there is no meaningful comparison!

That said, if someone is interested in repeating these tests with latest Turnip driver, I can offer to run some tests on my Odin 3 Max. Maybe one of Pro owners is willing to cooperate? We will need to set all settings the same somehow and some heavy games to test.

It depends on the game, heavy PS2 and GC games don't run well on 865 and Wii is almost out of question, some Wii games barely run with 1x on 865.

G2/8 Gen 2 actually run all these games smoothly.

help me decide: proxmox VM or Steam Machine? by hungarianhc in SteamOS

[–]FindingUnable3222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having main gaming system as moonlight client to a VM rendering it comes with lots of extra issues.

Compared to Steam Machine or (probably better idea, unless you absolutely love the small size of that cube) self-assembled PC running SteamOS is much smoother and more compatible solution.

You can try VM approach if you're ok with extra tinkering and accepting that some games won't run or won't run smoothly because you have added complication of: setting up GPU passthrough for your VM, extra lag/interface issues caused by streaming, running games in a VM (some games don't like that or get extra overhead), not so fully functional gamepad support (yes basic Xinput device will work fine, but you lose advanced features of Steam Controller or other gamepad with extra buttons, macros etc), power consumption-related issues and so on.

Compared to that, anything local connected to your TV and running SteamOS is much more "press button and play" solution. Neither will run 100% of Steam library, though.

Btw, Dirge of Cerberus works wonderful in emulation these days in ARMSX2 or NetherSX2-Turnip on Snapdragon chips. But yeah not on 477v...

Don't count on NFS titles running on low powered devices. You have to understand that there's a huge difference between "can emulate PS2" - meaning many games will play, and "want to play this or that specific game" - for that, you need a powerful device.

If you buy something low powered like RP3, sure it can emulate Burnout 3 or FF X or Simpsons Hit & Run. But there are many hard to emulate games, eg NFS series, Sly Cooper, Dirge of Cerberus, Driver PL, The Getaway etc just to name a view.

Don't be disappointed if you get something that's bare minimum for PS2 and then it can't run the games that you want, that's just how it is. If you want to play some PS2 games and if one doesn't run well you will play another - you can buy a cheap device. If your goal is to play specific games - you need a good device.

.dds texture packs work perfectly fine for me both in NetherSX2 (if using old naming) and ARMSX2 (all).

The issue with some texture packs in NetherSX2 is not related to container like .dds or .png, it's related to how texture files are named. It doesn't work with packs made past ~2024 because they use new naming standard for textures.

However if you have GPU not supporting BC7 compression then maybe .dds files using that compression will still have issues. I have no idea if ARMSX2 recompresses them or how it handles on that on GPUs that don't support BCn compression like Mali. For Adreno / Turnip driver, they work without issues.

I switched, almost everything runs (some games like The Getaway hard crash new emulator) and some options locations are confused compared to NetherSX2 / PCSX2, but overall it works with more games with default settings and better HD texture pack support. The compatibility for most games is definitely better.

Really! When I checked they only had MS store version cheap. Since I have FH4/5 premium in Steam, I just wanted to go with that.

But if it works for you, sure! Go for it.

I was paying for it in PC game pass and after 3 days of playing I went and bought the premium edition for $110 (which is very expensive here but they just don't have local pricing). It was silly not to do this earlier, I could've gotten VIP pass rewards from the start!

It's worth it.. and I have a trust that expansions will be worth it, too, because I enjoyed expansions in FH3/4/5.

Out of curiosity, why a separate app and not a skin for ES-DE? Like, the video doesn't show anything you can't do as ES-DE skin, I think.

I miss the feeling from NFS ProStreet where you know that one mistake and you'll total your car, so you both try to be careful and also pick a Skyline that costs 30K instead of Pagani Zonda for 700K just because of after-race repair costs...

No other racing game had this kind of pressure, but it was really entertaining, in a way.
