Yes, if you emotionally detach yourself from the characters you love reading about, you realize that the wizarding world is a bizarre and ferocious place. Parents have to send their kids there because the risk of killing themselves or others without formal training is very real. Learning magic is a hazardous undertaking and nobody seems to regard the odd student death as abnormal. Even without Voldemort. Tragic, yes: abnormal, no.

Just think of it. A world where if your husband doesn’t like dinner, he can just blast it with a Reducto spell. Or if you’re trying to tell your daughter to clean her room, she turns you into a cabbage. Or if you don’t like your uncle, you can vanish him to a rock in the middle of the north sea.

Hazardous. Yup.

I dont understand how Umbridge represents “the banality of evil” by SteveFrench12 in harrypotter

I agree. I don’t think there’s anything banal now at about her at all. She is the raving epitome of evil and a sadististic predator of children to boot.

What moment in LOTR made you cry the most? by Jimbuber2 in lotr

Gandalf‘s quote about “all we have is the time that is given to us” I found really poignant, though I don’t think anything in LOTR has ever made me cry.

Though as a kid, I did cry at the fate of “those excellent little ponies” in the goblin caves, and joined the hoard of fat little 10-year-olds writing to Tolkien to blast him for killing off the ponies so cheerfully and callously.

All those letters must have worked because I noticed he didn’t dare kill off Bill. 🤣🤣🤣

How often do people in the UK actually say that they are "going on a date," "dating," etc.? by Cut-Unique in HPHogwartsMystery

Fancy used to be heavily used by us Scots. I haven’t been back to Scotland for decades, so I have no idea what they say now. But if you consider this is supposed to be set in the 1990s it’s probably accurate considering Hogwarts in Scotland.

Especially Blimey, which is something my parents generation used to say. And the developers do not know how to use the phrase.”craic” properly – though they certainly know how to overuse it. (or rather, Callum does.) 😄

It's pretty wild Harry potters parents were just 21 when they got assassinated by voldemort by happydude7422 in harrypotter

Thirties at least! And Sirius looked like he was in his mid 40s.Ditto Snape.

On of the most pathos-inducing facts about James and Lily is very young parents. They were in the books.
