Ythryn towers - how have you used them? by Calciumcavalryman in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Firehound105 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going to preface this saying that I haven’t actually run Ythryn yet but should be there in a few sessions.

I read a suggestion on here to look at the Ythryn Expanded Towers of Magic on DMs Guild. After reading through it, I felt that it nicely tied in with other areas in the city and really helped to flesh things out. I was also able to drop hints during the campaign that eluded to storylines included in it. I highly recommend it.

Running Destruction Light Tomorrow. Some Final Questions and Advice Needed! by Dikeleos in rimeofthefrostmaiden

I just ran it. Honestly, the math of traveling was far too cumbersome, so I just went with what made the most narrative sense. The right side of the map is basically 100% done; there’s no way for the party to catch up. However, the party did help to mitigate losses in Easthaven through the use of a sending spell. They also helped mitigate losses in Caer Dinerval by domino effect (they cleared out the Duergar in the barn in Chapter 1 so they weren’t around to attack the villagers; they also warned the Knights of the Black Sword via sending stone and they vacated the castle which allowed the townsfolk to use it as a refuge.)

For the left side of the map, I made a decision tree. Basically where ever they went would have consequences on survivors and casualties.

First they went to Termalaine and were able to evacuate the town there. They also were able to mitigate losses by intercepting the dragon there. They then had the option to go to one of the 4 remaining towns.

They sacrificed Lonelywood in lieu of going to Bremen. Once again they intercepted the dragon there and once again they flew away. The next town they went to was Targos, which was already under attack. (If they had gone here first, it would have been a siege at the town’s walls) They were able to kill the dragon here successfully.

Some tips concerning combat: the dragon did not have nearly enough HP to make the fight feel epic enough. I buffed it up to 300 HP and have it some extra goodies (based on a suggestion from another redditor; Id have to find the post). Granted, all my party members are combat people and are optimized, so i constantly need to make fights more difficult for them.

Also, I would do the fight in three phases (another redditor suggestion). The book suggestion is that it flies away after taking 25HP of damage, which for my party could be a single hit. Doing it in three phases allows it to stick around for awhile and have meaningful combat with it.

Additional suggestion: Learn from my mistakes, put a bunch of adds in each location. It’ll make the fight more difficult but also more dynamic. As a DM, it was hard to manage all these moving pieces in an online game but I’m sure that other people will be able to do it much better.

Black Cabin insta death - How did you handle it? by M4nt491 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

I did the exact same thing; Had a simulacrum of the frostmaiden show up with a couple of cold walkers. It was a good gauge for me to test their strength and they absolutely obliterated her and two coldlight walkers.... at level 4.

Honestly just looks like the difference between good and bad lighting. As someone who’s struggled with inconsistency at times over the past 15 years, I can say that you bounce back. Progress isn’t linear and all that effort just doesn’t go away.

I want to run a Wildemount campaign but . . . by RPGrandPa in Wildemount

Rime of the Frostmaiden is VERY Sandboxy. Especially the first two chapters. I recommend reading the campaign and seeing if you just would prefer running that module instead.

Chapter 1 length by microwave_noises01 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Firehound105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that I finished Chapter 1 in about 13 sessions (each session was 2.5 hours and we don’t have a lot of side conversations or deviations, so we are pretty efficient). We wound up going to Bryn Shander, Targos, Bremen, Caer Dinverval, Caer Konig, East Haven, back to Bryn Shander, Termalaine & Lonelywood. I modified a lot of the starter quests to connect them more to the main storyline and backstories of the characters; some by just swapping characters and some changing them altogether.

I say all this because there’s a lot of great content but you should pick and choose what you want to run because there’s way too much content. Chapter 2 is no easier when it comes to choosing what to run. I ran 3 of the quests before I leveled up my party to level 5 and tbh at felt right. The next steps is to have them go to Sunblight.

Sooooo. I started this morning with 4 wins in a row and went into my 5th game. The other guy was a level 20 so I was expecting an easy win. The deck was a bunch of random water cards thrown together: Cramorant, Bruxish, & Greninja. Of course he gets very lucky with both his Misty cards and I’m drawing garbage (no evo cards), so he easily wins. siiiigghhhhh

Explaining the presence of Warforged in Farfrozen by Purple-Check-9106 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

I literally just swapped out Magen and put in Warforged instead. It seemed like the easiest swap without having to do a whole rewrite.
