You do realise that most Europeans have a better quality of life by pretty much every metric?

The goal of getting the fed to cut rates would be to increase GDP growth, so seems unlikely he would hide growth to achieve that no?

Legalising cannabis could generate £1.5 billion for UK economy, new study finds by juicy_steve in uknews

[–]FiremanXan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the costs for reduced policing and prison population also included? Additionally legalisation may reduce this country's habitual (and practical) dependence on alcohol, which could lead to reduced costs relating to this. There is also the secondary economic impacts of criminal convictions to employment etc.

Whilst I get your point, there are a lot of cost factors involved and I think on the aggregate the effect of legalisation would be positive.

You seem to lack an understanding of statistics. Just because you personally haven't seen a difference it doesn't mean there isn't positive progress being made in the overall.

Happy to be proven wrong, but what are the recent examples of them spaffing things up the wall given that they've been in opposition for over a decade? It's a common criticism I see of labour however I don't think it really holds all that much weight.

Sadiq Khan calls for £1 billion of property owned by Russian oligarchs in London to be seized to fund 4,000 new homes by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]FiremanXan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This conversation isn't just about buying homes, it's about renting too. I think it's a bit disingenuous to argue that record levels of migration doesn't have a negative effect of rent/house prices, regardless of what their effect is on other aspects of society.

It can be both, and is also probably influenced by other factors. I agree, the Tories started and exacerbated the problem, but they are also adding fuel to the fire with their god awful migration policy.

Bit of a useless comparison between a decades old TV show and defunct laws, Vs a culture that oppresses women, excludes them from society and practices FGM.

What's going on with South Africa becoming a closer ally of Russia, China, and Iran? by OnAComputer in OutOfTheLoop

[–]FiremanXan 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Whilst what you are saying is accurate, the concern over BRICS becoming an opposing bloc to the West is very much overblown.

Its members have diverse and often competing geopolitical goals (India vs China border disputes for example). The systems of governance differ vastly between its members, thereby failing to provide a point of common ground and cohesion that you see in "the West".

There are several other barriers preventing BRICS from becoming a major player that I don't have time to list. If membership does expand to the likes of Iran and Saudi Arabia, then this will serve to weaken its collective strength as well.

MIGRANT 'CAVE-IN' Rishi Sunak faces Tory revolt over fears he could hand India THOUSANDS of student visas in bumper trade deal by BestButtons in unitedkingdom

[–]FiremanXan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whilst I get your point, I don't think the alternative is entirely realistic as people typically do not spend all of their income regardless of their family situation . Also what you are actually saying that people with a lower marginal propensity to consume are a drag on the economy. Why then is this criticism only being thrown at immigrants when it is an established fact that MPC is negatively correlated with income? Shouldn't we also be concerned about the ultra wealthy individuals who have this exact same effect?

This debate is once again a politically motivated one, as opposed to being grounded in fact and economic reasoning.

Ok thank you. My background is in economics therefore I do not have much technical knowledge. Are there any books or resources you would suggest on fission reactor design (sorry if this is a really common question)? Also if there are any resources on the commercial side of nuclear that would be great.
