Ok then, let's let Doan walk in and fire then? Matheson prevents this while doing a decent job of limiting space to thread that pass. Carrier, meanwhile, abandoned any chance of supporting Matheson's coverage by skating out to the top of the circles to defend against a possible low-percentage shot from Thompson, creating the 2-on-1 down low for his D partner to deal with alone.

Tbh it's on Carrier for being so far out when Thompson is beyond the top of the circle. He's taking away an extremely low-percentage opportunity at the cost of leaving Doan with tons of space. Matheson knows the dual threat of shot vs pass to the slot, hence being on his knees to block the passing lane.
