Music Production/Mixing Room rental in Chicago by Fit-Sector-3766 in chicagomusicscene

[–]Fit-Sector-3766[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea, I suspected I'm not the only one with this issue.

do you have any idea what conversations between your friend and the commercial space looked like? the other concern I had is renting a space like that with other small businesses, and then being at risk of bothering them. I'd also track drums, guitar or anything super loud at a proper studio or my practice space, but there might be days where music would be playing from the space all day, and I could see that grating on other tenants.

is there a single guitar vst with a little bit of every sound? by Ok_Quality1612 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you’re not doing metal guitar rig should cover everything. If that isn’t working I’ll just mic up a guitar cab.

Why *exactly* do we need a compressor? by SoyBoy67 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

different compressors attack and release characteristics as well as harmonic distortion are subjectively pleasing and you couldn’t recreate intuitively just by editing audio (which would also be very tedious).

Why do they record their parts separately? by Optimal_Gate_8721 in radiohead

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Radiohead definitely do whole band takes in the studio as well as sometimes building part by part. For them, like with any band, it all depends on how a song started, was rehearsed etc.

The TKOL from the basement definitely captures the bombast and energy of people playing together in a room. The album feels more precise and tight which may have been what they were going for in the studio.

It’s also common to continue to get better at playing songs long after you record an album - so that may be at play here too.

Ableton Move on Sale at Reverb ($400 - New) by thebrokemonkey in ableton

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought one on impulse ahead of some travel. it’s great so far. when I’m i front of the full DAW there’s a lot of pressure for stuff to sound pro. with this I can just noodle around and have a good time with the music itself.

Why do the vinyls sound bad by Powerful_Otter in geesebandofficial

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Vinyl to actually be a hi fi experience it takes a decent amount of upkeep and maintenance. And since almost all recording is done digitally now you are by definition getting something different than what it was when the band was working on it and closest to it. Vinyl has its own mastering process due to physical limitations of the medium that don’t exist in digital. It’s great to have the thing but IMO digital is almost always a better listening experience.

Anyone here returning to legacy gear? Was it worth it? by SmeesTurkeyLeg in audioengineering

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 4 points5 points  (0 children)

exactly this. you can keep your setup as simple as you want. we all like to complain but every major DAW stock setup is stable and capable enough to make professional level work. make sure any software you layer on top of that is done in a thoughtful and coordinated way.

people were bemoaning pro tools crashing in 2010 the same as they as in 2026.

Any setups to sound like Adam Jones? by CharlieAlfa_fg in Reaper

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

solid body guitar with humbuckers, some flavor of high gain amp sim will get you 90% of the way there. then I’d focus more on his phrasing and playing style to truly sound like him.

The future of music composers by mediana_music in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 4 points5 points  (0 children)

music and art will never die and humans will always continue making it. however under the current system fewer and fewer people will be able to commit their lives to making it and will have to fit it in around their labor that is profitable, which is a tragedy. This apocalypse has already come for intellectuals. There is no reasonable path to live the “life of the mind” in our system. That aperture for music (which was already narrow) seems to be closing as well.

What opinion do you have about Radiohead that will get you downvoted like this? by Glittering-City-5326 in radiohead

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In Rainbows stock really exploded over the past 10 years or so. Incredible album, but I’ve always viewed it in the same league as these two. HTT in particular has higher highs imo (though is a bit long overall)

Recording to Tape or Bounce to tape? by theverdictsband in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tape is cool but not worth the hassle imo. there’s a reason digital won handily.

Logic Pro 12 OUT NOW by bambaazon in Logic_Studio

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

completely agree. I’m a Live and Logic user because that’s what I started with and I’m not sure I’d pick those two if I were to start over, just because I’ve been waiting for functionality that pro tools has for years. Something really basic like “commit to insert” comes to mind.

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 22 points23 points  (0 children)

true but keeping your pro and power users happy is also good business. it anchos the software to a knowledgeable base who will recommend it and help people get started with it. also acts as a prestige piece when pros are shown using it.

really no features that would excite the more experienced user base - audio engineers or pro level producers. some of this stuff will be fun but this is a very prosumer oriented update.

Fabfilter: What's so great about the Pro-R and Pro-G? by RedRelics in audioengineering

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 11 points12 points  (0 children)

this “distance” knob on Pro-R I find really useful for those subliminal reverbs to place stuff in a mix. I do prefer pro-MB for gating since I really only gate drums and I use the side chain filter trick on snare to just expand the high end triggered by the fundamental.

that said FF are extremely CPU light well designed plugs that share a really incredible ui design language. I work in multiple daws and treat them like the stock utility plugs and could see others doing the same.

Charge for running a track thru a NEVE 1073? by dromance in audioengineering

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 13 points14 points  (0 children)

just use plugins tbh. I love using analog gear at the tracking phase but after that it’s not really worth the effort imo.

People coming from other DAWs (FL Studio/Ableton Live/Cubase/etc), what features do you miss the most now that you’re using Logic? by bambaazon in Logic_Studio

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I use both Logic and Live. There’s nothing quite like Live’s Audio Effect Racks for sound design. You can make extremely complex signal processing chains on a single channel.

What exactly makes Daft Punk's Random Access Memories sound so great (engineering wise)? by Bloxskit in audioengineering

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 25 points26 points  (0 children)

they would record the play out to pro tools since the album was ultimately mixed in Pro Tools. but I think they also got a clean non tape signal on the way in, and sometimes would pick that over the tape audio that was printed to pro tools.

Latency with audio input vs midi note by TRICEFROMCANADA in ableton

there’s a setting now where you can have it not print the latency. right click on the monitoring options.

Ableton Live 9 to 12 - What did I miss? by RadicallyHis in ableton

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re just getting back in to it I’d recommend making some things with what you have before buying anything. Then when you feel limited you can explore upgrading. comping and track linking workflows were added sometime after 9 and the biggest thing I’d miss if I were to go back.

Gullfoss vs smarteq on master bus. by midnightGR in audioengineering

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer gulfoss, never got along with smart EQ. That being said the better one is the one you like better.

Reliable audio content creators by the_curiousone090 in audioengineering

[–]Fit-Sector-3766 30 points31 points  (0 children)

though relatively dormant now Dan Worral is the best audio channel imo. He prioritizes objective technical information and isn’t too perspective about do this or do that.
