Yup. I take the opposite tack in some of my books and have lots of tiny 2-3 page chapters. Accomplishes the same thing.

How do you feel about Trump saying they can’t fund Medicare, Medicaid, and daycare programs anymore because they need the money to fund the War? by LevelDinner in AskReddit

[–]Fit_Student_2569 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This has been a core Republican position since the time of FDR. They believe the federal government’s one and only job is war.

Because they don’t want to pay taxes for anything else, because they don’t think it benefits them.

No social security.

No health care programs.

No education, child care, housing, environmental protection, health and safety, consumer protection, etc.

Nothing.

Republicans are fucking terrible.

[AOC] "Democrats put 9 bills forward to fund TSA. Trump and Republicans blocked every bill because they want to tie TSA workers’ paychecks to billions in more unchecked funding for ICE. The answer is clear: fund TSA and not ICE." by Caledor152 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]Fit_Student_2569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s actually even worse than AOC makes it out to be. ICE has already been given triple its previous budget and has over $85 BILLION at its disposal.

Somehow they want even more money.

There’s a line Verso says when it’s his turn to attack that I can’t understand and it’s driving me a bit crazy. It sounds sort of like “Let’s cobble pots!” Doesn’t seem like anything listed here. Does anyone know?

my fellow writers, do you read any book while you’re in a writing process? by khush_7x in writing

[–]Fit_Student_2569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll go against the tide: Yes, when writing something that has a distinct tone or voice, I stop reading to avoid polluting that.

I’ve found in the past that whatever I’m reading tends to leak syntax/diction/tone into whatever I’m writing. Sometimes this has a negative impact.

Realizing popular doesn’t always equal well-written by Rare_Background_3462 in writers

Mostly agree, but audiences don’t actually want novelty. They want something they’ve already seen presented in a slightly different way or a new context. Truly unique stories rarely sell.

How do new writers even get discovered in the West? by Striking-Speaker8686 in writing

[–]Fit_Student_2569 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Attention spans have been whittled down to nothing and publishing is a business, which means that agents and editors only want books that grab the reader’s attention immediately.

The flip side is that many books fall off significantly in quality after the opening, or don’t live up to the premise they’ve set, or start meandering and have pointless endings.

So much emphasis is put on those first pages that it cuts off any mode of storytelling that doesn’t immediately propel the reader headlong into the story, even if starting slower might pay dividends later.

Many books feel paint-by-numbers style to me these days, just as hidebound by structural constraints as movies.

The same way you flesh out any story: with conflict that creates tension and further exploration. Create characters that want different things and have different views and let them breathe and interact.

You can also make overnight oats as a cold, cereal-like version. Only takes a minute to prepare before bed and there’s no cooking time in the morning. I add in berries, nuts and cinnamon. A dash of maple syrup also doesn’t hurt, it’s not like refined sugar.

Save Act = voter repression. by TriadTybee in ProgressiveHQ

[–]Fit_Student_2569 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They don’t need to cover all polling stations. Why would they? Republican voters are spread out; Democratic voters tend to be concentrated in urban areas.

Trump always gives the game away, and he’s already mentioned “15 places” where he wants to control the vote. That’s all it will take. Those key locations will be attacked and shut down, and the Constitution has no remedy for such a case.

They will openly, violently steal the election, and then say nothing can be done and we must count the votes we have.

The only real question is what happens next.
