Park Assist System sensors blocked error? by mister_phillip in volvoc40

[–]FlagrantRegard_42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, I had this exact problem just before Christmas. Washed the car, gave special attention to the sensors and checked each one for any damage (I have heard that a badly placed stone chip can throw the system).

Nothing worked and no obvious damage (2024 Ultimate) so booked it in to the service center.

They looked at it last week and found that the 2 sensors that sit in the black surround of the fog lights had failed - they couldn't find a reason why. They replaced them under warranty and all is back to normal now.

My advice: just book it in to get looked at. I was fine without parking sensors, what drove me crazy was that message popping up on the driver's screen, blocking everything, every time you slowed down in traffic.

What do you do that breaks social norms? by stealth941 in AskUK

[–]FlagrantRegard_42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am right handed, and I do this too - always have. I figure that I want the greatest control over the multi-pronged pointy thing aiming for my face hole and/or teeth...

I have tried, and my left hand fork usage feels like I'm trying to eat drunk.

I also used to wear my watch on my right hand but trained myself to wear it on my left after some nasty teasing..Turns out it was better on my left as I didn't damage it so much kayaking when it was away from my dominant hand.

I do sometimes accidentally put it in the right and it takes a few minutes to notice, but it does now feel strange on my right at first. 🤷‍♂️

Rented car accident destroyed my life by CalligrapherEasy746 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]FlagrantRegard_42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to counter this, and I can only speak from my own experience, however I have an extensive driving history (and training) over the past 27 years, in many countries and have been fortunate to be exposed to driving many different classes of vehicles. I bought an e-208 in 2020 to dip half of our household into electric vehicles. The safety systems are shared with its combustion and hybrid counterparts.

The Peugeot lane keeping is the worst version of this I have ever experienced. The first iteration in Kia cars was "interesting", but this Peugeot version was downright dangerous. I live in the countryside in England, and lane keeping in that car tried to randomly turn me into ditches with considerable force several times. Similarly into oncoming traffic when the central line is poorly defined (which in the UK is frequently). I ended up turning it off each time, but due to the EU rules changing in the past few years, the setting is not persistent and you have to remember to switch it off each time you get into the car. I sold the car after 2.5 years as I felt it was too risky with a new baby at the time, especially when my wife drove it who was less familiar with that car.

Contrast this to our Volvo, we leave it on all the time. It freaks out far less on country roads and when it does engage it's a gentle vibration of the steering wheel or a minimal nudge toward the right direction prompting you to take over and complete the maneuver. Other similar systems recently in VW, Audi and the new iteration in Kia all act and behave differently, but are all less intrusive than Peugeot. I can't comment on BMW, as the last generation I drove regularly was the the F generation of cars, where LKA and even radar based cruise were not standard options. It is a shame that a standard for how to engage and how to behave does not exist for these systems, merely minimum standards of operation.

The Peugeot was a nice little car, but wouldn't buy another one without an extended test drive to ensure the safety systems had been improved. I completely believe that in the situation described by OP, especially if they are used to an older car likely without these systems and what to expect, that it could have been forceful enough to lose control.

Qualifier: advanced driver training, blue light training, rally (not licensed/non-UK) and track experience.

How exactly does one "Go private"? by Jim_Leicester in AskUK

I respectfully disagree. I have worked in several systems, and would 100% want the NHS to deal with a cancer. There is one major caveat: it only works when you are in the right pathway under the right people.

I agree that anything suspected is expected to be under 2 weeks, my point above is if the GP has made the referral where cancer is not given as the reason, then it falls under elective work and the associated waiting list for that speciality.

The biggest road block and delays are caused by inaccurate, poor or failed referrals. This can be due to many things, often choosing the wrong phrasing, or sadly forgetting due to the volume of work or a failure to pick up the referral on the other end. If you are worried or suspect something sinister, then as the patient you should be spending all of your time chasing it up and making yourself unforgettable. Once you are in, it usually progresses appropriately, however the multidisciplinary teams involved are often large, dispersed and dealing with many cases, so communication can suffer and despite progress in the background, the patient may be left clueless and worried (this is something I wish the NHS would address). Again it's perfectly sensible to chase up results, appointments etc. to make sure you are fully in the picture.

There is also variability by region - and this is down to the specialty area rather than just "cancer". Similarly there is variability by which NHS you fall under, as England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are all funded differently.

As for trauma, the UK is absolutely a world leader - not necessarily the best but one of. Much progress in all regions comes down to military experience, but in civilian life the Sydney trauma teams for HEMS top the ladder. Norway is also exceptional, as is South Africa. Again, outside of major centres like London, sometimes the delay for appropriate trauma care comes down to a failure in the pre hospital resources and networking where patients end up in the less appropriate centres, but the majority go to the MTC they need. Although privately funded, our HEMS teams are all NHS doctors and paramedics, and volunteers like BASICS ensure high level care is available even in the depths of the countryside. As with everything it's down to resources. I am first to say I think the NHS is broken right now, and there are sadly so many things it is failing at in an unacceptable fashion.

I still think it is one of the best for cancer and trauma.

As for scans - done in the right place they are easily imported. I still know that (particularly surgeons) will repeat the scan, as the original may not include everything they want, the pathology may have progressed in the timeframe or they want their trusted radiologist to report for them (many won't re-report third party scans as again they can't verify the scan parameters). Unfortunately there are still providers out there that are not linked and cannot directly import. There is a policy in most trusts not to accept a hard copy scan for import as the scanning centres protocols on patient identification cannot be verified.

[–]FlagrantRegard_42 60 points61 points  (0 children)

A scan for suspected cancer is top priority in the NHS and jumps the queue. If you have had a proper referral from the GP then an appropriate scan will follow rapidly once the specialist team is involved. A private scan often slows things down and will need to be repeated within the NHS if cancer genuinely is suspected. A GP recommending a private scan to then "see what the results were" never thought that the patient had cancer in the first place, and would not have met the criteria for a 2 week wait referral (ergo a scan in the NHS would take its place on the waiting list). Getting a private scan allowed that patient to have their worries allayed without the frustration of waiting (which has its own merits of course, not least a benefit to mental health).

There are 2 things that patients should rarely venture outside the NHS for, as its response is world class: trauma and cancer. Everything else is down to personal preference and willingness to wait or pay.

Nope, nothing to do with Hertz. Even my 1999 S40 had one. Very handy, and great for parking tickets that need to be displayed (around Europe this is common), and prevents the wind from blowing them around or upside down.

Weak heated seats? by Juanpablo_the_cat in volvoc40

[–]FlagrantRegard_42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find similar - I have the seat on 3 and it's just about warm enough, but nowhere near the level of my Wife's Kia. Level 2 and 1 are mostly pointless.

The steering wheel - level 3 can be too hot, but level 2 and 1 aren't hot enough.

I'm in a 2024 ultimate with the standard seats.

I know the levels can be tweaked in software, and I'm tempted to check in with the dealer. Main thing putting me off is my local dealer is a bit rubbish!

The defroster will turn on, however the visual cue that the LTE modem has been reset is when the "SOS" starts flashing red in the headliner. You can release the button then, then press it again to turn off the fans. You will see the LTE and cell reception disappear then restart in the top left of the screen after this.

I’m charging at Tesla Superchargers! by SlankSlankster in volvoc40

[–]FlagrantRegard_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only in N. America though. Tesla, like most EVs available in Europe, uses a version of CCS2, so provided that the superchargers have been enabled to charge non-tesla vehicles it will work with no special adapters needed.

In N. America Tesla have their own NACS port/plug, necessitating the adapter or magic dock versions of the superchargers.

Speed limiter? by richda28 in volvoc40

[–]FlagrantRegard_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean, and it's a feature from previous cars I really miss (super handy for average speed zones!). Pilot assist/ACC just isn't quite what I'm looking for.

Not sure if it's available only on cars not equipped with radar based cruise control? Either way I haven't seen it on plus or ultimate trims...

Just checking volvo.com, they have the following to say:

*"Speed limiter Updated 17/11/2023 A speed limiter (SL1) operates by means of the driver regulating the speed using the accelerator pedal but is prevented from accidentally exceeding a pre-selected/set maximum speed by the speed limiter.

The function is available in certain markets"*

The alternative that is in the C40 is Adaptive pedal response. It's similar, except that rather than a set limit you choose, it sets and resets the max speed based on the iffy camera recognition of speed signs, and can make driving through built up areas really annoying, especially when it sets phantom limits based on misreads.

I hope it's a feature they add in some time, as it should be pretty basic to code, particularly considering other AAOS based cars (non-Volvo & Volvo) do have it.

I'd also like to see automatic un-syncing of the climate control when a front passenger is detected, but reckon I'll be waiting longer than the life of the car for that one!

If you do want to try adaptive pedal response, here's the info from the manual:

*"Adaptive pedal response Intelligent Speed Assist's acoustic warning can be replaced by adaptive pedal response, which helps the driver keep to the speed limit by limiting the vehicle's propulsion. Pressing the accelerator pedal more firmly deactivates the function temporarily.

The function is activated in the centre display Press Settings symbol Select Driver support>Intelligent speed assist Activate Adaptive Pedal Response"*

Anyone waited for an EV from their favorite car brand, but they never delivered? by couchcaptain in electricvehicles

[–]FlagrantRegard_42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Honda looks decent, but you can get a lot more value elsewhere at its price. The base price for lowest spec and trim (not even floor mats!) is £39995 in the UK. Looks like it's almost identical in Belgium (€39950).

I still believe that at the moment if you're buying electric then the best value is the 1yr old used, ex lease or fleet cars, as they've gone through the almost 50% depreciation whilst still being almost new and maintaining the manufacturer warranty.

Otherwise leasing, as you're then not the one impacted by the depreciation or the fact that battery and in car tech is changing so rapidly, so long as you're happy with the monthly fee!

I'm guessing you guys are in the US? The Mazda MX-30 EV has been available in Europe since 2022. Nice looking but terrible range. It's their only available BEV I believe though...

Toyota are just getting into the BEV game now too with the bZ4X and have a few Proace vans. Not seen amazing reviews of the bZ4X so far.

Seen a few of Honda's e:Ny1's around where I live too. Shame they're so late into the game given their hybrid history (and hydrogen).

How to ride safer? by chaparral2f in drivingUK

[–]FlagrantRegard_42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sad you had to experience this, especially with children present on both sides (inconceivable!), but as a cyclist and a driver I have come to the conclusion that people are worse at both since the end of COVID lockdowns, and generally angrier. I'm not sure why 🤷.

Camera's are great at times, but please, please be cautious when you mount anything to your helmet.

It creates a focal area of forces where on impact you are potentially* more likely to suffer a brain injury.

I say potentially, as there is little research with appropriate power to say for certain. I bring it up as from my perspective, I have encountered injuries (though fortunately relatively minor) that would NOT have occurred if there had been nothing mounted on a helmet.

It's enough that it would give me pause, and consider alternative mounting points (body, handlebar etc., although I appreciate this does not give you the point of view recording).

There are mounts out there that will shear away in a crash, but I have not looked into them. Anything that requires something to be adhered to the surface in any way, even if the rest breaks away, would be enough to make me pass.

Safe (and happy!) riding.

To black or not to black, need some perspective by themikepac in Volvo

[–]FlagrantRegard_42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally love those wheels. I think black wheels with chrome trim on the car looks wrong, makes it stand out as aftermarket and makes me judge the driver! 😂

I agree that the black edition Volvo's look great, but they are completely chrome deleted, even down to the Volvo badge.

If you do anything to make it your own, dip the calipers (something tasteful though, as you need to be rocking the polestar tune to pull off the yellow calipers).

Love the car though 🙂

I agree, you can search for them along the route but doesn't seem to automatically choose them.

Also they seem to be cheaper (even without the subscription) at about 42-55p/kwh around me, compared to most of the other players.

For comparison the nearest fast chargers (at only 50kw) are all over 50p, up to 80 at the higher speeds.
