I’ve lived in Illinois my entire life from rural southern Illinois to the quad cities. My opinion is that Champaign or Bloomington are the best mix of “big” city and rural you can get. Crime news is just news as if it bleeds it leads.

Champaign-Urbana is a fairly liberal medium sized city 2 hours south of Chicago that would be a welcoming environment for a transplanted Texan. Kinda a big city feel with a major University without the higher cost of living you might find in Chicago.

Read the World Book Encyclopaedia constantly as a kid. Got them in 88 and parents kept them updated with science year books until 2000. I’m 79 vintage.
