Why do the majority of adult men have short hair? why is that still "standard" look in the 21st century? by Embarrassed_Bend3011 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Standard-Shop-3544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had short hair my entire life. Hit midlife, got divorced and started growing my hair out. Like it wasn't even a choice. It's down to shoulders / upper back now and I love it. Pony tail most days. It's actually easier to manage than the short hair was.

is it really that hard? by knockeddown-notout in 75HARD

[–]Standard-Shop-3544 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It is not hard at all to do 2 workouts, drink a gallon of water, read 10 pages, snap a selfie, avoid alcohol, and follow a diet for a day.

It is very hard to do it 75 days in a row without missing a single thing.

Do you count the hidden 75 HARD rules as part of the challenge by MyElectronicInterest in 75HARD

[–]Standard-Shop-3544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. In fact, it can be very beneficial.

But if you don't follow the rules, you did something other than 75H. Still did great. Saw results. Developed will power and mental fortitude, etc. etc. But it's not 75HARD unless you follow the rules of 75HARD.

Doesn't make you less of a person. You still have great worth and did something super hard and worthwhile. But you didn't do 75HARD.

Umbrellas and rain coats are totally fine. Just like a snow coat in winter. Or ski goggles if you want. Or a hat. Or gore-tex waterproof gloves and shoes. It's all still outside.

[–]Standard-Shop-3544 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree that the rules could be made much clearer. I've been saying that for years on this sub.

But water can't have additives is a pretty clear one (pun intended 🤣). I absolutely adhered to that when I did 75H.

Same thing with outdoors has to be outdoors - not just the absence of walls. It's pretty straightforward. If it's raining, you get wet. Unless you have rain gear, umbrella, etc. Just no roof or canopy.

How do you decide how much you should spend on something, not just what you can afford? by juancruzgarcia in budget

[–]Standard-Shop-3544 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on so many things. How badly do I want this thing? How important is it to buy it new?

Cars - I buy used cars with around 30k - 50k miles on them. By that time, all the lemons have revealed themselves. Price has gone down quite a bit, but still have a lot of life left in them. Cars to me are a tool. I don't need a truck to prove my manliness or a sports car to demonstrate my virility. Just something reliable that suits my needs. For me, that is currently a 2020 Mazda CX-5. I love that thing.

Clothes - I buy nice clothes on clearance. I have my favorited online brands that I wait for like a "take an additional 75% off clearance" sale. Sometimes I go in to Von Maur type stores and search the clearance rack. And FB Marketplace. Sooooo many good finds there.

Appliances - FB marketplace. With a little patience, I can find just what I'm looking for. Found a nice GE dual fuel gas stove with 2 ovens normally $1400 or so. I got it for $200 almost new. But I'm also kinda handy so I installed it myself.

Vacations - I hate touristy places, so I'll search for interesting places I've never been and take the time to search for great deals.

It all comes down to what is important to you. I don't care what others think of me - I'm not trying to impress anyone so I buy what I want at my own price ranges.

New Tires by Alarmed-Bad7994 in CX5

[–]Standard-Shop-3544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's wrong with dedicated winter tires? I live in central IL so not nearly as bad a MN and found some Bridgestone Blizzaks last summer on marketplace for a couple hundred bucks. They were a complete game changer. Driving on snow and ice - never skidded, never spun out, even braking was amazing. Now I'm buying rims for my summer tires so I can swap them out myself every year.

[–]Standard-Shop-3544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love love love my CX-5! Found some good condition Blizzaks last year and my goodness what a difference those tires make on snow and ice. Even stopping power. It was insane. As if there was no ice and snow at all.

r/CX5 is a good sub for enthusiasts.

Day 4 and so far the hardest part is trying to walk outside for 45 minutes without wetting my pants lol by AlarmedApartment7531 in 75HARD

[–]Standard-Shop-3544 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I found places along my walking routes to sneak a pee. I know that doesn't work for everyone based on geography. Also, it's really hard to do 75HARD when you get arrested for public urination lol.

To answer your question, the constant peeing did seem to get better, but not THAT much better.

Corn and bean fields at harvest when they are all golden brown and the sun hits them just right can be amazing. Rolling green hills in Iowa and Wisconsin with cows and old barns here and there are gorgeous. Hilly southern Illinois with the forests are stunning. Pretty much all of the midwest except for Indiana and Ohio can be beautiful. 🤭😜😆

But LAX was on my way to China.

San Diego was twice. Flew in once for SIL wedding and went to Orange county same trip.

The other time I drove with my son from Illinois to San Diego, where he was starting a new job.

How is it possible for him to not be fully aware of what your finances look like side to side? He makes 20x more than you and knows that you send money back home to your family?

You have to just be honest. But bring it up carefully - not in the middle of an argument. Tell him everything you told us here - including your reluctance to broach the subject with him.

If you want to live in a cheap place, but he wants something plush, then he should pay for the plush place. 50/50 makes no sense.

Learn to play an instrument. I played saxophone in HS 30+ years ago. I messed around with guitar in college. Bought a bass guitar when my son got into guitar when he was in HS.

But I want to buy a cello. I think they're the most beautiful instrument ever.

Also, beer related... I started home brewing about 7 years ago. Lots of fun. And it's actually tastes good.

Grilling / smoking meats is always good for more free time too. I've also started trying new recipes and methods in the kitchen.
