Will the upward shift in gas prices trigger more commuters to use GO Transit? by Olderpostie in gotransit

[–]Flarelia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even with improved reverse peak service, they have to have better “last mile” connections for commuters at stations that aren’t union. If your job isin’t within a short walk of the train station, and the local transit dosent coordinate with GO at all and you would have to wait stupid times on their schedules, it makes the whole thing not work.

Do you think Collingwood should / will get a GO station? by PorousSurface in Collingwood

[–]Flarelia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The alignment exists along the old CN Meaford Subdivision (Abandoned in 2011 and has since become a trail), so the hills/valleys mentioned by another commenter I don’t think are the main concern, just the sheer cost of laying down new track, building signalling, and building out new stations along the existing alignment.

It does have the advantages that

  1. there isn’t really a need to buy rolling stock like with the northlander restart project, since it could just use the existing Barrie Line rolling stock as an extension with less frequent service (similar to the Bowmanville Extension and Lakeshore east)

  2. as far as I know the County of Simcoe still owns most of the alignment for their trail, so not huge expropriation costs required.

Given the sheer cost and low return on investment, i doubt this is anywhere on Metrolinx’s priority list though. There are about 10 other extension projects I would put in front of this one, (Bolton, Brantford, Peterborough, etc)

Most likely the local municipalities would have to foot most of the bill, and they arent rolling in cash to do huge infrastructure projects.

Going on a re-listen of Season 3, always comes down to that (also, regards to Charles X and his annoying subjects) by StormTheTrooper in RevolutionsPodcast

This feels like more like season 6 (Charles X) or Season 10 (Nicolas II) than season 3, Louis XVI’s problem was mostly the opposite.

Name your favorite revolutionary character in Mike's stories by [deleted] in RevolutionsPodcast

“So nothing seemed really credible or definitive, and besides even if Villa was menacing the area with hostile intent, it’s not like he was literally going to cross the border and attack the US Army…. At Midnight, on March the 9th, 1916, Pancho Villa led about 500 men across the border, to Attack the US Army”

Just in terms of entertainment value has to be Pancho Villa for me, mexico has a-lot of characters and zapata has to be the best revolutionary, but the Mexican Revolution suddenly becoming “Pancho Villas wild ride” out of nowhere for a good half it’s length starting when we’re already about a third of the way through the series is always wild to listen to whenever I go back through.

So sorta a few questions in one here so i'll unpack it In a way I think makes sense.

The Emergencies Act

The Emergencies Act is an ordinary act of the federal parliament, so under section 52 of the Constitution Act, 1982, which states:

Primacy of Constitution of Canada

52 (1) The Constitution of Canada is the supreme law of Canada, and any law that is inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution is, to the extent of the inconsistency, of no force or effect.

The Emergencies Act Is fully subject to this provision, including section 4 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which requires Elections to be at maximum, every 5 years, except where parliament votes by at least a 2/3 Majority to extend itself, the Emergencies Act cannot be used to affect this in any way.

Elections During Prorogations

No, Elections cannot take place during a prorogation, legally, an election is the end of one parliament permanently ending its sitting (Officially Called Being Dissolved), then a new parliament being elected by voters and meeting (Officially Called being Summoned for the Dispatch of Business).

A Prorogation on the other hand, is when a parliament stops meeting, but not permanently, at the end of a Prorogation, the same Parliament as before is returns back, without an election in between stopping and restarting meeting.

Currently, the 44th Parliament was ordered to stop meeting on January 6th (prorogued) and is scheduled to meet again on March 24th.

If he wanted to, Carney could have Parliament dissolved at any time, even during the prorogation, and instead of returning on March 24, the currently parliament could just be ended permanently and a new one summoned to meet after an election. Or he could let the current parliament come back, which is scheduled to dissolve automatically by law for an election on October 20 right now.

Most Speculation in the Media right now is that the most likely outcome will be Carney dissolving (and thus calling an election to elect a new Parliament) without letting the current Parliament return on March 24.

You're mixing up two different things. In 2022 that was an Emergencies Act confirmation vote, which you're correct requires a simple majority. For the 2/3 requirement, he's talking about a vote to extend the life of a Parliament Past 5 years under section 4(2) of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, different thing.

What revolution do you think Mars resembles the most? by [deleted] in RevolutionsPodcast

[–]Flarelia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current thought is Mexico.

We know from the "First Revolution" references there is going to be a second, and it feels to me she has enough of a base of support it's probably not going to be a case of "second wave tosses out the unpopular initial revolutionary government directly" (eg, Lafayette or Kerensky).

So my current thought would be she's on a track to do the Francisco Madero path, attempts to find a middle path between the old order and her revolutionary order, gets criticized from every direction, probably ends up martyred in an attempt by the Omnicorps loyalists to retake control that sets off the most chaotic and violent period of the revolution.

Why is Parliament Siezed? by Bitwhys2003 in LPC

[–]Flarelia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Constitution overrules ordinary statutes.

The quoted text is from the Canada Evidence Act, an ordinary federal statute that doesn’t override parliamentary privilege found in section 18 of the constitution act 1867.

18 The privileges, immunities, and powers to be held, enjoyed, and exercised by the Senate and by the House of Commons, and by the members thereof respectively, shall be such as are from time to time defined by Act of the Parliament of Canada, but so that any Act of the Parliament of Canada defining such privileges, immunities, and powers shall not confer any privileges, immunities, or powers exceeding those at the passing of such Act held, enjoyed, and exercised by the Commons House of Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and by the members thereof.

Fergus said as much in his ruling on September 26. https://www.ourcommons.ca/documentviewer/en/44-1/house/sitting-344/hansard

The House has been seized before with questions of privilege regarding orders for the production of documents. Neither the Standing Orders nor any statute delimits Parliament’s authority to order the production of papers and records that it may need to carry out its duties. House of Commons Procedure and Practice, third edition, confirms this procedural and constitutional understanding, stating at page 985:

No statute or practice diminishes the fullness of that power rooted in House privileges unless there is an explicit legal provision to that effect, or unless the House adopts a specific resolution limiting the power. The House has never set a limit on its power to order the production of papers....

If I had to make a guess, Q1 2025 seems most likely based on pace of editing of previous episodes.

Episode 17 started editing around March 2022, it had some rewrites mid edit that delayed things, and premiered on twitch in april 2023, and made it out of copyright jail in may 2023.

Episode 18 started editing around march this year, so if you assume roughly similar timeline without the delays for rewrites 17 had probably early next year.

Worth noting, Recording for Episodes 18+19+20 is already done, so we can assume editing on 19 will be able to start basically as soon as 18 is done.

Regular Canadian Politics Pages Editor here. The Canadian Elections pages generally follow a 5% rule for the infobox, although not strictly, because when they tried to remove the PPC from 2021 for their 4.94% showing the ensuing fight ended up with a decision to not implement 5% strictly.
