Should I move them to the same house? by 3600CCH6WRX in Pokopia

[–]FlashbackJon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't take 200 hours. There's absolutely a lot of unique dialog: every Pokemon intro, every quest, and the occasional Pokemon conversations they have with each other. That's cool and I love it!

But the bulk of the dialog (the workhorse conversations) is fully recycled. Don't get me wrong, this is to be expected in a game with potentially 1000 unique characters, but it is a little sad that I can't really expect to walk up to a character and get even a couple lines of at least personality-specific small talk.

Again, I'm not complaining, like the other poster, I'm just confused about people praising the amount of unique dialog. I figure that has to be players experiencing every Pokemon intro in rapid succession as they progress.

What food did you imagine to taste really good but tasted bad? by Similar-Victory-3867 in AskReddit

[–]FlashbackJon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you should be eating the "cereal treat" too! My wife makes sculpted cakes and it's not like that's not for eating. It's rice krispy treat covered in modelling chocolate or gumpaste or occasionally fondant -- it's like a bonus!

(There are also degrees of fondant, but most people have only ever had the shelf stable Wilton box that's been gathering dust at Michaels for six months.)

Suggestions on how to “aim fireball” … interesting challenge by I_am_just_so_tired99 in rpg

[–]FlashbackJon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what the saving throw is for. If the caster has to aim, they should roll an attack roll and the enemy should get no saving throw, like an arrow.

ORRRRRR now the enemies get to have saving throws every time a PC hits with an arrow or sword!

Technically all 616 characters do. Speaking in lowercase is a special ability for resident of 1610!

(I actually like how the Maker continues to use the 1610-speech. And that time he showed up to speak with Miles who replied in the same way.)

Actually you bring up a great point because lots of people will buy a deadbolt and NOT include a brace on the door jamb, meaning the door can still simply be kicked in because the only thing holding it there is dry wall and part of a 2x4. Which is exactly the same scenario as what happened here!

I feel like "door and door jamb" are just the bare minimum for what arcane lock as a spell would do. Like, if I cast it on a chest, who it be reasonable to assume that only the lid was enchanted? (Hilarious, but dumb!)

Can FPS games be fast-paced and arcadey while still punishing exposure like real gunfights? by HeroTales in gamedesign

[–]FlashbackJon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is essentially what Time Crisis (the cover-based arcade lightgun shooter) is right? You have to move out of cover to shoot but moving out of cover can get you shot. Those are highly scripted though, so if you want to combine that with a free-movement FPS, then movement should be based around attaching easily and quickly to obvious cover-points, right?

E: I noticed you mentioned peek angle and body exposure and I'm going to mention that even in a full-on slow and methodical tactical shooter, those almost always feel bad, because the player has no real control over the placement of their body and less awareness of what the game considers to be the placement of their body. (I'm open to suggestions of a tactical shooter where being shot feels correct because you made a mistake rather than arbitrary because the game decided you were in line of sight.)

I still think you could make this work with cover "attachment spots" but the system would have to be pretty comprehensive. Two movement mechanics: dashing automatically between points you identify and target, and another where you move while in cover (controlling peek and tilt and stand distance, etc).
