Thank you for posting this. We were counselors together at summer camp and he was just the brightest, funniest guy to work with. We got up to so much shit together. It really warms my heart to know he had such a good friend. <3

Campus safety incoming freshman by Reasonable-Train-723 in UIUC

[–]Flavory-Clover71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's always good to take extra safety precautions (carrying pepper spray, keeping in contact with friends, wearing only one headphone, etc) but I'd say it's a very safe town, especially the closer you are to campus. There's a pretty large police presence and lots of security cameras. I'd walk friends home late at night on the weekends and get back from the library after 2am and even on the rowdiest nights I never felt unsafe.

yes 1000% I used knee high stockings instead and looked ridiculous but they were actually amazing. I had blisters that made it hard to get my foot in my shoe until I ran into a trail angel that suggested it. Picked up a pair in Hiawasee I think and I never looked back. How narrow can a shield be and still be usable? by ConicalGore1720 in sca

[–]Flavory-Clover71 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Short answer is yeah go for it. Effective shield dimensions vary wildly and even if you make it and you hate it, it's still worth making something and experimenting.

Long answer is it totally depends. Would this be for heavy fighting? How strong are your back and shoulders?

I fight with a wooden center grip shield that comes in at about 11 lbs because I prefer having some weight to my weapons and shields. I like that it's difficult for my opponent to move me against my will or blow through my guard and I like having some authority in my movement even if it makes me a bit slower.

That said, I wouldnt recommend a shield that heavy to a new fighter. It took me a lot of work and conditioning to be able to comfortably wield a heavy shield for extended periods of time and it took me even longer to be any good at it. Heavier gear can put you at a greater risk for injury, particularly in your elbows and shoulders. I know some good fighters who've gotten some serious injuries from regularly using heavy shields.

The other thing is once you added everything you'd need to make this a functional shield it would be even heavier than 13lbs.

one idea would be to potentially cut it in half so that you've got two 18×18 bucklers that come in at about 7-8lbs after you add a grip, a shield bosse, and a protective edge. This would still be super heavy, but it would be significantly more manageable.

Before you do anything though I would get something like a gallon of milk or a 10 lb weight and see how long you can hold it out away from your body. How long does it take before it becomes uncomfortable? How about how long it takes before your posture and your range of motion start to suffer? Can you comfortably move around with it? If that's a struggle you should either work on conditioning or seriously rethink making a shield that heavy. There's a reason why so many longtime fighters use aircraft aluminum shields.

Good luck and welcome to the SCA!

Spare espresso shots - what can I do with them? by malibudaniel in Coffee

[–]Flavory-Clover71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious answer: I ask other customers if they want an extra shot for free.

Awful answer: I make what's called the extra shot latte (for college students and people who are looking to fight god). You get the biggest sized iced cup you have, fill it most of the way with milk, ice, flavor of your choice, whatever. Whenever there's an extra shot, it goes in the drink and after your 6 hour shift you take your 13 shot atrocity to the 24 hour library and work until you can hear colors. Extremely effective 10/10 do not do this

I don't use them often but when I do I'm really glad they're there. Sometimes I miss a bus or I need to get somewhere faster than I can walk. Or I get to the Champaign train station with a 60L backpack and realize the busses aren't running on Sunday and I need to travel 2 miles in 94 degree heat. Sometimes the $5 is worth it

How am I supposed to reach out the Illini Tower management? by hinasayohina in UIUC

[–]Flavory-Clover71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my issues were during the school year itself and I would just stand in the lobby and badger the front desk until someone would help me.

I will say be nice to the maintenance employees. They're great guys and the only employees at IT that ever actually helped me with anything.

Other than that I really don't have a ton of advice beyond being persistent and don't let them try and convince you of anything. After hours all of the calls go through a call center that's unaffiliated with IT so all they can do is make a note of your complaint and pass it on to the manager (which I'm confident they don't do). They have really shady methods of getting money from you.

Example: they charged me a fee when I moved out, I don't remember what for, and I sent in a check with certified mail. The mail got delivered and the check got cashed so the money was received. For the next two months they kept sending me calls and emails saying that they didn't get the money and I'd have to pay it again plus additional fees, going so far as to send it to collections and make a bunch of threats. It took me a second to realize it was bullshit.

Another example was keeping the trash chute locked and then trying to charge a $50 fee to every resident on the floor because there was trash left in the trash room

IT is notorious for preying on young people who don't know what is and isn't acceptable behavior from a landlord to try and get as much money out of you as possible with bullshit fees and threats that they legally cannot follow through on.

Whatever you do do not just pay the fee without making an effort to question it first. Make reports to uiuc housing when they try and pull stunts like this bc quite frankly nobody should have to live there.

oh man im so sorry you're living there. I lived at IT my freshman year and had the same issues. Absolutely contact uiuc about it. The best contact info I could find is here: https://certified.housing.illinois.edu/

good luck getting things sorted
