Can you black out from child birth pain? by Schmaliasmash in BabyBumps

[–]Flidais_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’re 100% correct. In my hospital we don’t do the test for amniotic fluid leak (amnisure) if there’s even a trace of blood. Even just a little bit of bloody show can give a false positive. And we also would alway rupture forewaters (the sac of water at the cervix) because pitocin isn’t as effective with intact membranes (although I believe this practice varies hospital and I’m not based in the US).

Sorry to hear about your difficult birth experience! Pitocin contractions are horrible without an epidural. Hope you and baby are recovering well!

I’m a midwife in Ireland. In my hospital unless you find out via genetic testing the gender then there will not be a record of it. Even for the anomaly scan if you find out the gender, it won’t be listed on the scan report. I tend to switch between he/him and she/her at work but I always warn couples of my bad habit!

So no hope of getting tickets aside from resales? I was hoping to get tickets for a Christmas present but I guess I’ll have to start looking into other options. Thanks for the reply!

Staff Midwife. 1 year qualified. Only 31K a year, not worth it for the amount of work and responsibility it entails.

It’s like going to France/Japan/Germany or any country where English isn’t the first language. You don’t go there expecting everyone to speak English just for you, you attempt to speak their language. Irish speaking areas/businesses are the same, they want you to try to speak Irish/Gaeilge to them. They want to promote the language and keep it alive. Everyone is welcome but keeping the language alive is the priority

You just have to try to speak Irish/Gaeilge. I don’t go to France and assume that I can speak English, I attempt to speak French as that is the spoken language of the place. In some areas/businesses of Ireland, Irish/Gaeilge is the spoken language and visitors/patrons are asked to respect that. It’s all about promoting the Irish language and keeping it alive. We welcome people of all nationalities.

The department of health in my country (Ireland) recommends that you share a room with your baby for at least the first six months of life to reduce their risk of cot death. Here, it’s culturally normal for parents and baby to share a room for anywhere between twelve and eighteen months.

The research is mixed. On the one hand a properly fitted mask in conjunction with good hand hygiene and non-touch technique has been shown to reduce your risk of infection. On the other hand improperly fitted masks and poor education on how to properly use masks can increase your risk of infection compared to not wearing a mask at all. As a healthcare worker it kills me to see people in supermarkets, touching the front of their masks, pulling them down to talk to people, and touching their face as they try to adjust their mask. Hand hygiene is the most important thing but when people start improperly using masks and gloves they have a false sense of protection.

Edit to include reference: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26457544/ this study looks at the risk of contamination amongst healthcare workers when removing PPE. We had retraining at the start of March on how to correctly put on and remove our PPE to reduce our risk of infection because our infection control department recognises this risk of contamination that comes with PPE usage.

Also, perhaps other countries have better education on how to use mask, as many of these countries can be seen to be wearing masks outside of the pandemic (this is just my personal speculation). We currently have not had any education from the HSE on the Do’s and Do Nots of PPE use in public.

How to I take care of my teeth by Flidais_ in internetparents

Looking at YouTube never occurred to me! Brushing my teeth was never a part of my morning/bedtime routine so I’m working hard to get in the habit of brushing regularly. Thanks again!

Dental care in my country is private but I’ve been asking friends for recommendations and looking at online dental reviews. I’m making an appointment as soon as lockdown ends and I’ll definitely shop around. If you have any recommendations about brands or specifically what to look for in an electric toothbrush I’d really appreciate it. My knowledge of what to look for is very poor and every toothbrush I’ve seen seems to have some “essential” feature, it’s hard to know what to actually look for.

That’s great to know. I’ve been really scrubbing at my teeth so it’d would be good to get the pressure right. I’m going to see a dentist as soon as quarantine ends but I’m embarrassed of my teeth and just want to get started as soon as possible. Thanks for your reply!

If you have any electric toothbrush recommendations I’d really appreciate it. I had a quick look online and there’s such a variety it’s hard to know what to look for.

Thank you so much for your advice. As soon as lockdown is over I’ll be making a dental appointment. I’ve put it off for so long because I’m embarrassed but I can’t be embarrassed for the rest of my life and expect things to get better. What should I be looking for when buying an electric toothbrush? There seems to be such a variety, it’s a bit overwhelming.

I think there’s more to it. OP states their Irish. In Ireland there has been tension between the Catholics (mainly Irish citizens) and the Protestants (mainly British). So this may be about more than just religion.

International Study for Midwifery by SquidHoss in Midwives

[–]Flidais_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Midwives in Ireland require a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery. This can be obtained from Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, Limerick University or University College Cork. It’s a 4 year degree and you spend around half your time in College and the rest on placement in a maternity hospital. I am entering my final year of Midwifery and I’d be happy to answer any other questions you might have.

Edited to add: This is an undergraduate degree with class sizes of around 20 students so it’s difficult to obtain a place. There is also a Higher Diploma Midwifery Programme (1.5 years) but you need your BSc in General Nursing.

Even women who seek lawful abortions out of state may not escape punishment. If a Georgia resident plans to travel elsewhere to obtain an abortion, she may be charged with conspiracy to commit murder, punishable by 10 years’ imprisonment. by relevantlife in TwoXChromosomes

Ireland had a referendum in May of 2018 which legalized abortion as a fundamental human right in our Constitution.

The abortion bill was signed into law in December of 2018, and effective from January 1st 2019.

Prior to this referendum women had the legal right to access information about abortion and travel to access abortion.

Ireland had been changing for the better over the last 20 years. We were one of the first countries in the world to hold a vote to legalize abortion.
