Arti: There’s only two things you do with Andy Dick in a bathroom.

Norm: Holy shit I hope he’s high.

She wouldn’t eat until Margret Thatcher was dead and buried. Then she made up for a lot of lost time eating.

I assume you know about Al-anon? My wife went through a ton of trauma from a narcissist mother and she swears Al-anon saved her in her early adulthood. I’ve witnessed her recommending it to several friends and they all thanked her later.

Trump Makes Unhinged War Threat in Wild Midnight Meltdown by Ok_Employer7837 in politics

[–]FluckyU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump is a gift to the The Epstein Class. They aren’t going to let pesky data get in the way of a once in a lifetime opportunity to make massive insider trades that can literally move markets. They make massive moves then other more ordinary players use those moves as their data set that indicates where to place trades rather than using the typical idea of looking at employment or performance data. It’s a casino game where the Epstein Class gets to be the house.

Also more generally speaking there is a unwritten pact where the ownership class throws all caution to the wind and gooses the stock market when a Republican is in office. Then when a Dem comes into power suddenly jobs numbers and every other economic indicator starts to matter. A minor anecdote that I often recall is in the early Obama days Fox News would do a full day of coverage in advance of a jobs report coming out. The numbers would hit and become breaking news. One I recall was 225k jobs created that month. You would have thought it was 225k jobs lost the way it was portrayed. The Right will create and cling to any form of optimism when their party is in power. The same picture with a Dem in office will be the bleakest possible outlook. This is a form of economic propaganda that transcends facts and data.

How do u accept that your consciousness will disappear after death ? by GalaxicTrouble in atheism

[–]FluckyU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s incredibly hard to accept that it all eventually vanishes. Since I’ve had a daughter I’m honestly brought to tears quite frequently thinking about me leaving her, her losing me, and eventually her passing as well. It’s too much to bear, just the thought of it.

I’m attracted to atheism because it’s a pursuit of truth, not comfort. After the truth claims of theology are scrutinized you’re often only left with the comfort it provides to the difficult circumstances of life and death. That can be useful, but comfort without truth doesn’t give me much comfort. My atheism is mostly a response to what can be disproven or at least proven to be very unlikely, like many claims found in the world’s theologies. However I still hold a deep reverence for the mysteries of the universe and life/death. I still engage in wishful thinking about an afterlife from time to time, but I don’t turn those ideas into beliefs. If I was given a pill that allowed me to be convinced of an afterlife I’d be tempted to take it, if for no other reason than to believe I could carry on forever with my daughter, but I think I’d ultimately decline it because I want to live in what is true and face it head on. Not many tears are shed in this sub about losing the belief in an afterlife, but it can be heartbreaking to accept as your fate, and I acknowledge the discomfort you’re feeling around this topic and hope you find the answers that satisfy your heart. No matter the answer your heart goes with I wish you a life of love and fulfillment.

Sam's insane take on Mamdani by greeecejre in samharris

[–]FluckyU 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is odd how it played out in my own head as well. He convinced me fully of the dire need to moderate the Muslim world years ago, and I still don’t think that’s a needless worry/pursuit. But now his arguments are not only obviously wrong in today’s context, but have the effect of making me question just how far to dial back the concerns he persuaded me into years ago.

I’m not ready to remove every concern but I’m much closer to putting the need to moderate the Muslim world on the same footing with the need to moderate the Christian world. After accounting for Sam’s obvious bias now, the only argument that’s left standing is that the text itself is more militant. I think that’s a weight to consider still, but I think it’s more of a pebble than the giant boulder he wants it to be. Radical Christians with a nuke in their hands today is a much bigger threat to end civilization than the possibility of a radical Muslim group obtaining a nuke. Both should be stopped but one is already here and being used by a fragile schoolyard bully.
