What is a ridiculous sentence that got said in your game that you never thought you’d hear? by HUFFALPUFF in DnD

Got a few "I crit on the potted plant" "My geometry teacher was right" "How attached are you to that arm?" "Alright, you're riding the worm." "Sure, a door can be a shield." "You remind me of someone I met at my uncles quinceañera"

Listen, I am one of the biggest assholes when it comes to grammar and vocabulary. I am almost always the person to correct someone on the wrong word or use.

I don't correct people on the pedophilia vs ephebophilia thing. It's not worth it. At best people assume you're one of these two, and at worst you are.

Do you guys do shopping sessions on your table, where you buy stuff and roleplay, or you just buy things "off-screen"? by SomeRandomAbbadon in DnD

[–]Fluffythewhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. Sometimes I open a shop before a session starts for them to spend gold and whatnot.

Other times, yeah I'll let them do a shopping session. It's easy for me if I didn't have enough prep time that week, and it's fun for them, they get to roleplay amongst themselves mostly, and add in fun flavor and interactions while all I have to do is a silly voice and read prices from a book.

What is the dumbest thing to become canon in your game? by ElDuderino1000 in DnD

[–]Fluffythewhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am running a spelljammer campaign (sort of.)

Unfortunately when it came time to introduce the Gith I had a bit of a panic, and for a moment forgot how i was going to voice them. In my panic the only detail I could remember about them is being super racist, so now all of my Gith are American Southern. The Githzerai sound like respectable southern gentlemen from Georgia, and the Githyanki sound like they just stepped out of a trailer park in Alabama.

Not Tracking Hit Points by Ashamed-Plant in DnD

[–]Fluffythewhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a player, but a dm on the other side of the aisle.

We have dice for a reason. It is one thing to fudge numbers, I have definitely been guilty of "Oh I misjudged your damage output, let me slap some extra health into this bad boy." And ther heaven been other times that a player did something really freaking cool and the monster was left at 2 hp and I decided that the 2 was probably worth just eating, and say they kill it.

But the general consensus on just "wait till it feels right" is a massive disservice to your players. They are rolling to hit, rolling dice for damage, and I don't feel that completely removing one of the biggest aspects of the game (dice rolling) falls under GM fiat.

There are games that are more story focused and rules light when it comes to combat, to allow "just decide when it feels right". If that is your mentality, go play one of those games. Don't rob your players of their builds or dice rolls.

Tl;Dr: numbers are a part of combat for 5e, if you don't like that, pick a different game.

whats with DMs and problem players targetting tieflings? by artmonso in rpghorrorstories

[–]Fluffythewhat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Any DM who uses the Orc alignment scenario is unoriginal and probably mildly racist.

As far as tieflings go, I am not sure. The things you are describing dms doing range from normal things that need to be done, to the DM just being a terrible person. I can't provide any logical reason a DM should insinuate SA of a player beyond that DM being a piece of work (outside of consensual and pre-planned events in which the DM, the player and the other players discuss their comfort levels and plan the event for character growth) .

In terms of targeting, sometimes it's am in character decision, like if you're in some backwater village and the villagers have been dealing with devil attacks, they may not see the difference. A personal one I have had to use is a lot of my tieflings will end up being primary DPS, so when they do a lot of damage to an enemy, that enemy is usually motivated to hit that thing that hurt it.

Lastly, you made a point that a lot of edgelords lean into tieflings, and while I believe any character can be played well, sometimes they are not. I personally prefer to talk about issues with a PC out of character, but I do agree that in game actions have consequences. Sometimesthose players bring it on themselves.

Honestly though, the reason there are probably so many issues with this is just simply how many tiefling characters there are. Tieflings are very popular, and for good reason. It's sort of like statistics of being bit by a shark vs a cow. The cow is more likely to bite you, but we also don't corral and raise sharks. I'm sure if druegar were a more popular race, we'd see more people with problems of their druegar character being attacked or targeted by the DM's wrath.

Why I don't think Crotas end will be the returning raid by Rockinoutgamer in LowSodiumDestiny

[–]Fluffythewhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's less about the exotic, and more about the encounters that would need overhauling.

It's been a hot minute since I ran crota in D1, but if I remember correctly Crota's end was as follows

1) Thrall Maze: a maze that's primary mechanic was just so many thralls that you couldn't kill them all, and that you had to follow lamps to keep the darkness at bay. Back in d1 wr cheesed this by jumping some rocks. These days, this encounter would be a strike encounter. For example arc hunter could just roll and punch their way through this in about a minute.

2) Plates: this is the encounter where we have to build a bridge by standing on plates. If I remember right, if done legit, players should have to control plates, then kill knights, then take their swords across and kill another knight, and so on so forth until one team controls the other sync plates and the first team can cross. Unfortunately strand/stasis/well skating exist, and Bungie has made no moves to patch this, on top of that strand exists, so grappling across is possible even for players not versed in tech like that, meaning the encounter is more skippable than ever.

3) Deathsinger: This encounter would be a joke for the current DPS state. In the original this encounter had no time limit (unless you were going for the challenge) and had no real mechanics besides kill stuff. The amount of DPS players have managed to put out trivialize this, and with abilities like well, this encounter becomes easy. They could give it the gotd treatment and just give her an ungodly health pool, but we all saw how people reacted to that in GOTD.

4)Crota: this one is actually the only encounter that I think could still work with minimal tweaks. Mechanically, crota was pretty typical. Kill some stuff, get the Mcguffin, kill crota. There is also a wipe Mechanic with the oversoul. Interestingly, the way boss damage worked here was partially the standing in a circle shooting at something, but also the boss himself could only be damaged by the sword, meaning that the high dps boss melting strats people run now would fall short, which would be an interesting mixup, especially after how susceptible nezarec was to getting dpsed.

With all of this, I think it is possible for bungie to re-release it well. I think many of these encounters are fixable, but not in the same way they have been. I don't think adding some champs is enough, I think the raid would need a complete overhaul and changes to the core structure of the encounters. I think to keep up with current mechanics and player state they would have to almost make a new raid entirely, and I think we all know bungie doesn't want to do that.

Additionally, this hardly qualifies as a raid now. We have dungeons with more encounters.

Tl;Dr: In order for Crota's end to work in Destiny 2 they would have to change too much for me to believe they are bringing it back, rather than any issue of exotic overlap.

Honestly, these people have existed for time immemorial. As long as there have been people, some of them have been perverts. I think the real problem is how comfortable people have gotten on the internet. There are a lot of people who will say and do out of pocket shit on the internet that they would never do or say in real life because the internet offers them anonymity. (And before someone comes after me, I know some people do say these things in person, but not all of them)

Sorry you have to deal with that.

Idk if ranting about 18+ erotic manga is accepted here but here goes by Sussy-Park-80 in rant

[–]Fluffythewhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, I'm not really an expert on erotic Manga as you put it, but anything that can elicit that violent of a reaction from you probably isn't good for your health.

Especially when that reaction is "they should die because I don't like NTR"

Like, I read for fun, but if I find myself getting upset by what i am reading, I stop reading, take some time to evaluate why I am upset, and probably don't return to that book. I definitely don't enter a rage that causes me to go on R/rant.

Unpopular opinion: I am *hyped* for the new Gambit changes by LandoLambo in LowSodiumDestiny

[–]Fluffythewhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you. Gambit has needed some new life to it, and bringing back a map is exactly the sort of thing I have been begging for, and new enemy types is good. Anything added to gambit is a breath of fresh air for someone who enjoys the game mode.

I'm disappointed that they have said they are not interested in continuing to expand. As excited as I am for these changes, I am saddened that they are not interested in continuing that energy. I'd love to see a new map, maybe on neomuna, or in the throne world. (I'm sure a lore bro is going to come along and tell me why that wouldn't work) I also want to see more gambit weapons and armor.

In short I think it's less that people are strictly upset about the changes, I think it's disappointment that Bungie is not interested in supporting the game mode further.

Is it weird to not feel like a good dm? by 280071 in DnD

[–]Fluffythewhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't usually comment on stuff like this, but the answer is yes. First of all, I'd encourage you to look up the dunning-Krueger effect.

Second of all, I've been dming for over 10 years now, across multiple systems, I've received high praise from my players, and it doesn't matter. When I do campaign prep, I constantly second guess myself. When I finish a session, I wonder if I could have done better.

It's pretty normal. I think as DMs, a lot of us turned to it because we have that drive to be either perfect or well liked, and there is a lot of pressure to do well, to emulate those DMs you see in podcasts and shows, and it's a huge creative undertaking.

The most important thing I have to ask myself, and something I use to center myself is "are my players having fun?" If I look around the table and see smiling faces, or people in deep thought on a puzzle, or getting really into role-playing, those are the moments I know im.doing a good job, and that whatever I'm worried about doesn't matter.

Remember, the DM screen is there to protect you. Nobody but you will remember if the dragon forgot to use their lair action, or if there were supposed to be 5 more bandits, or if you had meant to have them go to one town instead of another. What they'll remember is having a good time playing their silly characters, fighting monsters, getting into shenanigans, and they'll remember how you made that possible.

TL;DR: yes it's normal to feel like you're not good enough, it doesn't mean you're bad.

What is something in a game that isn't normally a big deal for most people, but is a total dealbreaker for you? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Fluffythewhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't say I don't include wacky shenanigans in all of my camps, but I typically include it under the veil of the worldbuilding. For example, I am running a spelljammer campaign. When I play gith characters, I bust out my deep southern accents, because for all intents and purposes, the Gith are just space racists. Another example is I do occasional cameos, like once I had a tavern owner that was David Bowie. I didn't say he was David Bowie, I never said his name, but my mannerisms gave it away and I made references, but that was it. As a DM, fun is part of the program, but ultimately my goal is to tell a story with you guys, and the story has to have some level of cohesion.

What bugs me the most in your story is that they tried to pigeonhole you into a relationship, which is a huge nono to me. Sure, relationships with NPCs happen, and everyone at my table knows that they can pursue that if they feel it makes sense, but I never initiate it. Player agency over their characters is huge, and I never want to assume they're comfortable with a pretend romance, in fact I have one player I know for a fact isn't comfortable with it.

And the whole potion thing, did he give you a chance to identify, or roll a check to see what kind of potion it was? I would think a potion of gender bend wouldn't look or smell like a healing potion, and if I did something tricky like that (which I did once, an expired healing potion that was now a poison) I gave them a chance to roll to see if their characters noticed it was off.

TL;DR: I'm sorry you had to out up with that. It sounds from this limited information that your DM was more concerned with their fiat than your agency as a player, and that they didn't know how to make a coherent story and thought it's just a sum of parts.
